I posted elsewhere that when I started grading the SD game I was so pissed after the way our first two series ended that I had to stop for the day. I got pissed again today as I was writing the week up. I did something in the grading that I'd not done before. I hit Alex for not making line calls. I'm not even sure it's his job, but it needs to be someone's and it has been his before. Here's why... S1P3: 3rd & 1 at our 44... Image 1 is taken at the snap. There were 5 defenders with their hands on the ground. Clearly you have to assume they are all coming. With the NT head up on Mack "man over or outside" is clearly the rule of the play. It Does Not Get Any More Simple Than This! And Yet... in image 2 we see the DE to the top running free to McC. Lastly in Image 3 we see McC about to get whacked having stood in to deliver the ball. And yes, I hit JT with a D- as well. S2P3: 3rd & 8 at our 48... Two D-line flanked by LBs to make a four-man front. A safety has walked up to add a fifth, but we have a TE tight to the left and an RB in the backfield. Image 2 shows the five are coming. No big deal... Barn addresses the OLB speed rushing to the top with Duke to help as needed. JT engulfs the Safety. This leaves four O-line to handle the three remaining rushers. The LB on the SD side of the 50 is going to spy Duke for the moment, but if he comes later, we are still good. But no... JT ignores the Safety forcing Duke to step up and take him on alone. Too bad since Barn is now preparing for a face plant as the SD OLB leaves him in his wake. Instead Joe chooses to help Bito with a D-line who is moving across Mack's face. So four Browns are blocking two Chargers. Good thing we upped the protection. The end is near... you can see the strip sack coming from behind as the Safety completes his beat of Duke to the inside. I could use another day off about now... I thought this needed to be broken out. If it makes sense to be merge it after the Week 4 grades are posted... fine.
