Overview

Dayes did not get the headlines like other ACC backs like Dalvin Cook and James Conner, but he's been a valued all-around offensive threat for the Wolfpack throughout his career. Going from Fort Lauderdale to Raleigh, Dayes earned carries (63 for 252 yards, four TD) and was used as a receiver (10-173, TD) as a true freshman. In 2014, he was one of just three players in the FBS with at least 300 yards rushing (573), receiving (32-321, 5 TD) and on kick returns (384) despite starting just two games. Dayes was breaking out on the national scene in 2015, and was leading the FBS with 12 rushing touchdowns through nine games, but suffered a season-ending turf toe injury (finished with 865 rushing yards, 24-172 receiving). His 2016 season was his best, as he covered 1,166 yards on the ground with 10 scores, while also catching 32 passes for 267 yards on his way to second-team All-ACC honors.

I like this pick, because if they take him out and put another runner in, that guy would be running for Dayes.

lol... Stop it... that's 2... in a row... Don't make me find you....

Gotta go the tape cause a breakaway back he ain't....

^^This is a great opinion on the kid. watched in NC several times. Us coaching him at Senior bowl made him easy choice in 7th.

Gotta go the tape cause a breakaway back he ain't....

Darius Jackson I hope can give us that because Dayes got no overdrive gear nor cruise control.

I thought for that spot it was a good value pick since we still do not have the Crow signed.

Dayes is a thick 5'9" 205. short frame & 30" arms won't help in pass pro but his 10.5" hands, the kid can snatch & turn it up pretty well. As said in prospect tracker. Maybe slight better vision with same Crow balance. I see Atkinson or Dayes winning a spot behind Duke..Sign--THE CROW

True; but my one of my favorite RBs in this draft Samaje Perine only ran a 4.7. I saw him rush for well over 300 yards on Oklahoma State on a day he split carries with floats like a butterfly, stings like a bee but when in doubt knock her out. Then again, if Oklahoma State recruited any more DBs that had Justin Gilbert's lack of desire to tackle people - that might have explained why I saw some breakaway speed the 40 times don't forecast.

The senior bowl added him and our DT to this team for sure.

I really thought Dalvin Tomlinson was the pick from Bama right where O' Gun was taken.Sorta due to Dalvin's higher competition level at Bama would be Gregg Williams choice. Williams had his hands on both of them "once" as he stated, at Senior Bowl. Dalvin went a few picks later(maybe even next pick?) Ok Gregg, here's your test paper?

But Sammie is a truck... I'd bet he's pretty high on the YAContact list. Also bet he's not very high on the annual longest run lists. That's a combo that tends to break down even the sturdiest of RBs.

What worried me about him is his production fell three consecutive years. His total-yardage trend was abetted his by missing three games, which not only doesn't negate my concern, but also does not explain his 3-year downtrend in YPC.

... and just like that... poof... the double post was gone...

The greatest thing the double post ever did was convincing people it was not real...

Seven of Dayes' 2016 game tapes are available through: http://draftbreakdown.com/players/matthew-dayes/

There are also a couple highlight reels on the youtube...

I watched one highlight reel and most of the Clemson game.

Nice, decisive, one-cut ZBS runner. Vision does look good. Also saw a couple jukes in or just coming out of the hole he selected. A couple were in quick reaction to a DB flashing up from the 2ndary. Clemson stuffed every power run... might have been a chance to pop one outside, but intent to go per design seemed to be coached into him.

Nice hands in the a couple passes his way... one screen and one swing/bubble. A couple nice blitz pickups vs. only one whiff... was slow to release when no blitz was coming, but again, this could be coaching.

Didn't truck anyone, but pulled out of a couple tackle attempts from behind him. Balance looks pretty good...

Impression: Kind of a Crow-Duke hybrid leaning more to the Duke side... Duke sized, but plays bigger.

How about an Ernest Byner clone? That would be good. Just from a different school in NC (Byner: East Carolina)

I thought Sashi said at the press conference he will help in pass protection right away IIRC.

Sashi don't coach football..In the end Dayes will split carries/duties with Duke. See tour's clemson ^^tape review. Dayes in 7th round..That's $Sashi$ meal ticket.Lets expand on 2 guys back in the woods.#1.Bobby Vega & I crossed roads back in college recruiting days of HS football.Bobby still lives(always will) in Morrisville,NC. Bobby was promoted to Director of College Scouting for the Browns when Sashi came in. Bobby is a College of Wooster grad 1 hour from Cleveland..The Guy can fast forward a kid with talent & put it on a pro field 3 years in advance. Bobby is no joke one of the best..#2.Andrew Berry-VP Player of Personal..Honestly,after seeing him fail in Indy. I did not like him coming here. But now am a firm believer that your only as good as what you surround yourself with..they both need to take some credit on this draft from top to bottom. The mantra was build thru the draft. If we were ever going to fix this mess,it had to start with trusting the scouting. I think we are finally there with picks like Matt Dayes
