Anyone else been reading this series? NFL going through the top 7 most 'painful' franchises.

Number one not revealed yet, but is there even a competition?

2. Jets

3. Bills

4. Lions

5. Vikings

6. Bengals

7. Chiefs

What are they doing? Releasing like one team name per day/week or the like?

And, of course, any team other than the Browns being #1 would be ridiculous. But, you never know....there could be an "East or West Coast bias".

You could see him put the Eagles or Chargers up there.

Yeah, seems to be one per day. I could have seen the browns maybe at 2 or 3. But there's no way we're less 'snakebitten' than the bengals, who wouldn't even exist if it weren't for our pain.

You've been reading your Browns history.....good for you....as a latecomer to the game.

All or nothing. Trust me, I know as much as I care to know about Art Modell and Paul Brown, the drive, the fumble, red right 88, the move, and 22 god damn starting QBs since 99.

A. Firing of Paul Brown

B. Red Right 88

C. The Drive

D. The Fumble

E. The Move

F. The Drop (Northcutt vs. Steelers in playoffs)

G. The Litany of Failed QBs

H. Any others you can think of?

One I didn't know about was Dwayne Rudd - sacked the QB to end the game (apart from a little fumble recovery run that came to nothing), celebrated by taking his helmet off and launching it across the field. Unsportsmanlike conduct, match continues...

I've added a poll now. In fact, on that NFL series, they ave the 'apex of pain' - the most painful moment in the franchise's history, so we can see how it compares.

Thanks for the poll ......and none can compare......but you never know.....we are esoteric and think we have had it worse than anyone else.

Think about the Jets......they lost to US, i.e. The Browns after leading by 10 pts. in that 1986 game that was the precursor to The Drive.

As for individual sports awful moments......last year's Super Bowl could be #1 on any list. Reminscent of Red Right 88....but on an even bigger stage.

One my first coherent memories of Browns football with my dad is the drop game. I can literally to this day describe everything about the play that led to Northcutt not catching that pass. I can remember the sheer and utter sadness and my dad saying "The Browns have lost this game". Me being a sprite young child said "dad, we still have the lead and they need a TD to beat us!" Wow, it's so saddening to think that's the only time in my natural life I've seen a Browns playoff team too...

People laugh all the time when I use the phrase "and this is how the Browns lose", but it started with that damn dropped pass.

wasn't there but that was the first real 'painful' moment in the early years of brown's fandom.

I was there...I was 11 years old. First and only game that I wanted to leave at halftime and go home and watch the rest because it was so fucking cold.

The Move is up there, though I can't put it at absolute #1, because there were rumors & rumblings. I was disconsolate for a couple days after the Fumble though. .

Yeah- I also had the mis-pleasure of witnessing that one in person.

Red Right 88 is my vote just because I was in the stadium for that game freezing my nuts off.

:) Mark- your problem at that game was twofold- 1) You had inadequate attire. 2) You weren't old enough to drink. I however was quite toasty in my Gerry Expedition parka sitting in the Dawg Pound with my dear friends from the Alaska Browns Backers who made the trip from Anchorage for the game. We also had a quite adequate supply of Jack Daniels on hand- Ah- those were the days.

PS- The coldest game I was ever at in the old stadium had to be against the Rams- in a year I can't remember anymore I think it was around 9 degrees. Me and the 'bro took a couple travelers from the parking lot to the gate- and we had beersickles before we got there.

I would include that one in a separate, "secondary pain" list.

Dwayne Rudd tossing helmet vs Chiefs, Browns lose.

Those new uniforms LOL

Learning that new owner Jimmy Haslems Flying J was being investigated by FBI.

Learning that Ray Farmer was being suspended for texting.

The loss to the Bengals...Dalton to Green trickery, Browns secondary caught sleeping.

Watching your Browns dressed in purple win their first Super Bowl.

Center LeCharles Bentley busts knee in first day of training camp.

Death of Don Rodgers.

An exciting season in 2014 starting out at 7-4, ending up 7-9.

The flea flicker loss..Bradshaw to Cunningham. Would have broken the Three Rivers Jinx.

Learning that Braylon Edwards cuts foot practicing barefoot.

Learning that soldja Kellen Winslows fucks himself up doing motorcycle stunts.

Every time Braylon dropped a pass.

Firing of Marty Schottenheimer.

Colts purposely losing last game keeping Browns out of playoffs.

Losing to Steelers in playoffs after being up by 30(?) at halftime.

Butch Davis quits.

LeBron James wearing a Cowboy hat to a Browns game.

Hometown hero Bernie let go...diminishing skills.

Ozzie Newsome joins Art in Baltimore.

Learning potential superstar Josh Gordon is getting suspended.

The Johnny Football fiasco.

The 41-0 season opener loss in '99 when the Steelers welcomed the browns back to the NFL.

The disappointment after watching QB hopeful Johnny Footballs performance vs. the Bengals.

I'm sure there are more.

There has been nothing so udd utterly painful than rooting for a franchise seemingly unable to lock in "that guy" at QB. at times, the ineptitude has been laughable if not downright embarrassing. some of the shit you throw against the wall should stick sooner or later unless you are in Brownsland where there is an incurable case of the Hershey squirts, metaphorically speaking.

the d rudd fuck up almost stroked me out

if you have not been traumatized by the Cleveland drama circus you are a sociopath. I deviate...

The troubling part of those losses to the Broncos is that the Browns were clearly a better team than Denver.

In fact, the AFC kept sending the wrong representative to the Super Bowl in an era dominated by the NFC. The AFC had been getting blown out in Super Bowls.

In addition to the Browns, recall Houstons loss to Buffalo. The craziest comeback game ever played. Houston ahead by 30+, and ends up losing in a myriad of freak plays, bonehead mistakes, and tickery to a Frank Reich led Bills team.

Houston would have been a much better opponent facing Dallas, having much success against Dallas those years, instead, the Bills go to the SB and the Cowboys blow them out.

In 1994 a heavily favored Pit team dominates the AFC championship game but loses to San Diego at home. San Diego goes on to the Super Bowl and gets their doors blown off vs. San Francisco. The Steelers would have at least made it a game, already handed San Fran their only regular season loss I believe that season.

for me it was the 27-7 loss to the Vikings for the NFL cHampionship.... the precursor season to the AFL/NFL merger

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1969_NFL_Championship_Game

worse yet that season was a 51-3 drubbing by the same Vikes in Bloominton that I remember seeing on TV

( was a young kid living in the great town of Maple Hts back then)

anyone else remember?

I had all the cold weather gear back then. I still lived in Cleveland. Not being able to drink would've made a difference but it was the coldest I had ever been.

I voted for The Move, but actually witnessing The Drive in person was sickening. Why Marty never blitzed Elway is anybody's guess, handing off to Herman Fontenot on 3rd & 2 in OT when we had Mack and Byner- and the FG was wide left.

Another painful moment that people forget about was Tommy Kramer hitting Ahmad Rashad in 1980 on a Hail Mary. We would have clinched the AFC Central in Minnesota, instead had to wait a week to do that in Cincy...in Kardiac Fashion of course.

Down the list is blocking a FG vs. Pittsburgh, but hey recovered, kicked it again and we lost. 2001 or 2002, can't recall.

Fortuneatly that one didn't cost as much as it could have. That was the year the Browns made the playoffs.

I was at that Rams game.....mid 70s. A friend of mine by the name of Westside Steve insisted that a group of us go to that game because Joe Namath was playing for the Rams. Well, this was the end of Joe's career and we got to watch him stand on the sideline with his parka on the whole game It was 9 degrees....plus the wind was gusting at like 20-25 mph off the lake to make it even more miserable. Not only that, but the Browns lost by like a 13-9 score. They really did nothing that day. It was just colder than fucking a corpse.

Death of Don Rodgers.

Firing of Marty Schottenheimer.

Marty resigned, he was not fired

Colts purposely losing last game keeping Browns out of playoffs.

Losing to Steelers in playoffs after being up by 30(?) at halftime.

It was 17....but who's counting

Butch Davis quits.

LeBron James wearing a Cowboy hat to a Browns game.

Hometown hero Bernie let go...diminishing skills.

Ozzie Newsome joins Art in Baltimore.

Not that big of a deal because he did that when the team was on hiatus. No one holds it against him.

The Johnny story is yet to be written... Give it a couple more years.

I'm sure there are more.

I'm sure nobody holds it against Ozzie, and those browns were not the real browns. But the ravens winning superbowls with the old browns team, and the old browns legend as GM, that's about as painful as it gets. But, it's all tied up in The Move, so doesn't get a separate vote.

Painful moments from just this year - coming back from 24 points down to tie with the steelers, only to give up a FG at the death; our D utterly dominating the best young QB in the league, only for our O to shit the bed, and have us lose in the last minute; watching the wheels come off the run-game (and the wings(?) come off the passing game) after Mack's leg break; JFF's 7 quarters of shit; textgate; the list is longer than it should be.

In spite of all that, best season for a long time - that probably says as much as you need to know about the Browns! :(

Yeah... same here. The Fumble is easily my #1.

We fought so hard to come back from far behind in that game only to fall a TD behind again late.

The handoff was made...

The hole was there...

I rose out of my chair.

Redemption for The Drive was imminent.

This OT would be ours.

We were going to the Super Bowl.

And then an arm was stuck out.

The ball came out.

I was literally floored by the biggest Browns' gut-punch of them all.
