THE BROWNS BOARD

The 40 Most Hated Players in NFL history

The Gipper

Recommended Posts

Here is the Sporting News list of most hated players in NFL history. Of course, it is a bit of a joke as no player that played before the 70s is named here....and only a couple at most then. This is sort of a team by team rundown....but acknowledging that probably half these guys played for more than one team:

Cowboys: Michael Irvin, Greg Hardy

Bengals: Pac Man Jones, Vontaze Burfict, Chad Ochocinco

Vikings: Adrian Peterson, Randy Moss

Steelers: Ben R. Hines Ward, James Harrison

49ers: Bill Romanowski, Terrell Owens, Deion Sanders

Ravens: Ray Lewis

Patriots: Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski, Rodney Harrison

Lions: Ndamakong Suh

Falcons: Michael Vick

Giants: Eli Manning, Odell Beckham, Lawrence Taylor

Seahawks: Marshawn Lynch, Richard Sherman

Bears: Jim McMahon, Jay Cutler

Saints: Ricky Williams

Jets: Keyshawn Johnson, Mark Gastineau

Bills: Bryan Cox

Raiders: Jack Tatum

Oilers/Titans: Cortland Finnegan, Chuck Cecil

Packers: Brett Favre

Broncos: Tim Tebow

Panthers: Cam Newton

Dolphins: Richie Incognito

Cardinals: Conrad Dobler

Redskins: Albert Haynesworth

Browns: Johnny Manziel

As I said, mostly more recent player. Only Dobler, Cecil and Tatum went back into the 70s.

Also....the reasoning for why some of these guys to be "hated" seems a bit skewed. Some of them is because they were just good and would beat you (Brady, Gronkowski) Other guys may have seemed a bit cocky (Favre, Newton) Some were considered dirty players (Dobler, Suh, Ward). One apparently was too pious (Tebow). A lot of them had off field issues/criminal issues. (Lewis, Vick, Peterson etc.) Some apparently because of their antics (Gastineau)

Who do you think has been left off the list. If there were a list of 50....add a few. (and who would you take off this list?)

Of course the inclusion of JMZ in there as the only Browns player named begs this question: Which Browns player in their history do Browns fans really "hate" the most?

Candidates:

A. Mike Phipps. Came in trade for Paul Warfield, then seriously disappointed.

B. Anyone of Weeden, Quinn, Richardson, Courtney Brown, Gerard Warren. Recent high picks that busted. Should Johnny be any more hated than these guys? (or is it the off field stuff that sets him apart)

C. The LB Triumvirate of Mike Junkin, Clifford Charlton and Craig Powell. All guys that could not play football. Junkin maybe gets some extra hate because he was taken so high and was bestowed with the Mad Dog in a Meat Market moniker?

D. Charles White. Heisman Trophy Winner, first round RB......who started coking up?

E. Willis Adams/Steve Holden...Braylon Edwards. the former two were just WR busts. Braylon was good, then bad, then became an asshole.

F. Todd Philcox. Asked to replace Bernie Kosar when he was released. One of dumbest moves in Browns history....but can't blame Philcox really....blame BB

Anyone else?

Interesting. That leaves 8 teams without a hated player.

Congrats Browns, Johnny Football places you amongst the elite!

If you want you can fill in some players from those 8 teams if you want. I think the 8 are:

Eagles

Jags

Bucs

Colts

Chiefs

Rams

Texans

Chargers.

Anyone from these teams history that are "hate" worthy? T.O go a lot of his bad rep as a member of the Eagles.

Candidates:

A. Mike Phipps. Came in trade for Paul Warfield, then seriously disappointed.

Good guy. Never hated someone just because their talent disappointed as long as the effort was there.

B. Anyone of Weeden, Quinn, Richardson, Courtney Brown, Gerard Warren. Recent high picks that busted. Should Johnny be any more hated than these guys? (or is it the off field stuff that sets him apart)

More disappointment than hate here.

I hated Quinn's faggy fans, and the stupid trade to land him, but I'm OK with the guy.

Johnny had the double-whammy: faggy fans and not personally committed to his teammates. Easy to dislike as a Brown, but I don't hate the guy as a person.

C. The LB Triumvirate of Mike Junkin, Clifford Charlton and Craig Powell. All guys that could not play football. Junkin maybe gets some extra hate because he was taken so high and was bestowed with the Mad Dog in a Meat Market moniker?

Again, hate the drafter, not the draft picks.

D. Charles White. Heisman Trophy Winner, first round RB......who started coking up?

Not hating him for having an addiction. Without him we would have had the Inner Circle, which was a good thing.

E. Willis Adams/Steve Holden...Braylon Edwards. the former two were just WR busts. Braylon was good, then bad, then became an asshole.

Ya, was never fond of Braylon. Kind of a punk without the production other than his "one good year".

F. Todd Philcox. Asked to replace Bernie Kosar when he was released. One of dumbest moves in Browns history....but can't blame Philcox really....blame BB

Not blaming the Cox.

Anyone else?

The only guys I never liked from the beginning and really wished they were never Browns were Jeff Garcia and Trent Dilfer. Johnny probably just joined them, but a least he was our own draft pick and not some free agent that took the money and sucked.

Add Raymond Clyborne and Andre Rison to that list ... took the payday, gave nothing back.

And Alzado was kind of dick, never felt like he wanted to be in cleveland.

Congrats Browns, Johnny Football places you amongst the elite!

Also, for your benefit, there are a couple of Steelers that could go on this list. The fact is, those 70s Steelers...and the Raiders, were among the dirtiest teams in history.

Joe Greene was dirty. Lambert took a lot of cheap shots. One of their DBs, maybe Blount...maybe not...was considered a forearm shiver specialist. (OK, these guys were good enough that they didn't have to be dirty...they just liked being dirty)

Though, I suspect that any Steeler fan list of most hated player would include Joe Turkey Jones.

(but oddly....he never did dirty stuff before or after that one play)

The Raiders, besides Tatum, had Ben Davidson, The Mad Stork Ted Henderson, George Atkinson was considered the worst.

Oh, yea, Rison for sure. He was just here for the money it seemed....and did diddley. I didn't get the same feeling as you about Alzado. While perhaps he was disappointed not being with the team he wanted to be with...probably the Raiders, he still gave his all here from what I can tell. I liked him.

Never felt the way you do about Garcia or Dilfer. Dilfer was just done, and Garcia was asked to be a square peg in a round hole. I wasn't sorry to see them go, but I had no animosity against them...except for the fact that they lost....but I understood the reasons for that.

In Winslow's non-defense, stupid to try a reverse wheelie on a bike- especially without the proper training. A regular wheelie isn't too hard to pull off- even did a couple in my younger and stupider days. Just don't pop it so hard you go over backwards, and have the bike land on top of you.

How is Warren Sapp of the Bucs not on your original list? That cheap shot trash talker even had death threats made against him.

A lot of people hate Philip Rivers of the Chargers. Surprised he's not on the original list either.

Not yet really. Maybe later. He had good years, then trouble. Unlike Braylon, he has not been seen as a asshole. He could re-ingratiate himself. But sure, eventually, maybe.

It seems many browns fans had the same animosity toward Gordon as they did Johnny though, calling for him to be released after repeated drug offenses.

I don't really hate anybody for failing to live up to our expectations.

I hate most players from most other teams just because, well they play for other teams.

I might hate guys that exhibit evil off-field behaviour or are team cancers.

Or if they play for the Steelers.

Good stuff Z even if I gotta claim my Manziel baggage. When I was his age as a rookie/second year player, I was in a fraternity so I projected some degree of maturity once he entered his alleged dream career. Partying was once thought to be the reason Marino had a disappointing senior season prior to him falling all the way to Don Shula in the draft. Once he got drafted, the guy was a dialed in QB that clearly prioritized football.

Charles White was supposed to have a nose for the goal line when he arrived here. He must have learned really quickly they used a different white powder than he preferred.

Alzado was so juiced up - that everyone hated the guy especially his teammates that had to deal with him on and off the field every day. His sad ending was a lot like all those former drug addicts that wore the Pittsburgh Stee-roids uniforms that Sports Illustrated did a body count of premature deaths of guys before/around 50 years of age.

The hatred toward Colt McCoy seemed really over the top sometimes. The guy was a 3rd round draft that outplayed both of the much higher paid QBs Seneca Wallace and Jake Delhomme here. That said, he was a 3rd round QB drafted by a bad football team so I never understood why people were so disappointed he didn't look like a highly productive/well seasoned 1st rd draft pick. Maybe I was just drinking the wrong beer. Just 2 years ago in Washington, he clearly outperformed both Cousins and RG3. The 2 QBs drafted ahead of him were Tim Tebow in rd 1 and Jimmy Clausen in round 2. So what did McCoy cost this franchise on the margin of error our FO gave him? Not that much. If I was his dad when the guy calling our plays from the sidelines didn't see or hear the hit James Harrison put on him - I would have voiced my disapproval too just like any parent with more brain cells than Shurmur. Think about that knockout for a second. The ONLY person attending, participating in, or watching that game that didn't see or hear the knockout was the guy CALLING our offensive plays.

Who could forget Paul McDonald has the ball e-i-e-i-ouch and poor Todd "Football Follies" Philcox? We've seen just about every outrageous thing you can imagine from the QB position here except a QB with Tourette's syndrome getting flagged for F-bombs in the cadence.

He just pissed me off a lot. We would have a drive stop, and then he woudl do something stupid away from the play. I wanted to kill him at times.

Ya, I remember a couple of those. But best cover corner we ever had.

When Rice spit on him than says he was "removing his mouth piece". Did he have a mouthpiece in too when his fiancé pimp slapped him? F Ray Rice hated him from day 1..

We may have had a guy with Tourette's Syndrome.....and a guy that in theory Browns fans should "hate" in a sports sense: Bobby Garrett, #1 overall pick of the Cleveland Browns. Couldn't play because of stuttering problem. But that was so long ago and many didn't care because the Browns were winning then. Its not like a Tim Couch deal.
