Schobert performing well in camp

Well, Carder is a life time special teamer, so if he cant beat him out, God bless him.

I don't think the nominal MLB is going to see the field much anyway, Collins and Kirksey will be on the field 100% and will be able to move inside when we bring in another DL or OLB or we have Gerbil running around as a hybrid S/LB

But glad Joe is showing up so far.

Another hybrid for the Williams defense. Keep 'em guessing who's coming from where. I like his added speed with some weight loss. Opens up that athleticism which Williams really values in his defensive players. It's exactly why he insisted on Garrett as the #1 overall too. And Peppers as his 2nd defender in the first round. Collins has it too. This D is shaping up to terrorize QB's when all is in place and fine tuned by Williams. PS-don't be surprised to see Joe Haden come on the occasional CB blitz too. He can tackle.

There are a few players on this defense that I think need to step it up. Schobert is one certainly. Orchard is another. (if he doesn't...he may be out on his can). Same for Xavier Cooper. Des Bryant needs to show that he can be back from his injuries. Same with Nassib. Same with Joe Haden.

Pryor and McCourty need to prove they were worth picking up.

A lot of guys on this defense need to step it up...or they could be gonzo.

Exactly. We don't want to have to play Tank. And it's not that he's BAD. He's just not all that great. He's a good backup.

Tank is a "lifetime special teamer" according to WHO? Our previous, inept D Coordinators? I'll wait to let our 1st QUALIFIED DC (Williams) make the call on who is a starter, backup, etc. For the 1st time, I am confident our players on D will be utilized in a way to best take advantage of their strengths. I really like Schoebert, but if Tank is deemed the better player, then I'm rooting for Tank to be the player Williams envisions.

Carder looked pretty damn good last preseason, when he got some playing time.....(not amazing or anything)....but decent for sure...

Glad to see they moved Schobert too.....he was a disaster on the outside, so this move to the middle "sounds" like it suits him well.....

Looking fwd to seeing him blossom, now that he has a position he can excel at....

He looked slow to me as I recall.

I remember same as Mud... Tank making fast decisions and acting on them at full throttle. Problem was the decisions were as likely wrong as they were right...

On the other hand... I remember Joe being slow and indecisive.

If nothing has changed, then I think I know which player Gregg would choose.

However Schobert has lost significant weight and gained strength & speed in the transformation. He did not look slow in the scrimmage.

Until the preseason game I had not been aware of his trimming down. Will be interesting to see is the power/quickness trade off materializes...

Yeah, I'm not finding that as a huge comfort either considering Tank Carder signed with us back in 2012. - Flugel

Is it really that uncommon for a 4th round OLBer to look confused and inexperienced joining a Dick LeBeau-wannabee scheme (or whatever diluted version Horton attempted) as a wide eyed rookie? I look at the extensive training the OLBers used to get in the schemes in Pittsburgh before they were empowered to start 2-3 years into their careers. Once Pitt finally stopped using experienced Pro Bowl caliber OLBers like Jason Gildon to train a Joey Porter for 2-3 years prior to Porter starting; and Joey Porter to train a James Harrison prior to Harrison starting, etc, - the OLBers beginning too soon for comfort had their growing pains on the field as Pitts' defense no longer remained its strong suit since about 2014 forward.

I'm glad Gregg Williams will not only get rid of the inappropriate schemes/alignment for our personnel; but he will also challenge a position coach such as his LBer Coach/son (Blake Williams) to find a more suitable niche for a guy like Schobert. A niche more about "see ball - get ball" than paralysis from over-analysis. That's just 1 example but it sure looked like Nate Orchard also spent more time in sic em mode than hesitating out of stance with worry if he should be covering the flats instead. What part of that impressive 19 sack season at Utah had anyone in the right mind thinking I want that guy covering zones instead of exclusively rushing the passer? That's almost like taking JJ Watt and Dr Frankensteining him to play out of a 2 point stance and asking him to worry about retreating to a zone coverage instead of doing what he was clearly born to do at the NFL level. Why handcuff that with absurdity?

I've never enjoyed seeing us square peg a round hole with the outdated 3-4 schemes we've rarely had the personnel to justify. I was thrilled to see Schobert and Orchard playing positions they looked far more comfortable playing. They both had a really good night... - Flugel

Agree total Flugs. It was a pleasure watching those guys just pin their ears back and get after it. Williams obviously knows what kind of player he wants and what he wants them doing. Thus his message to Schobert to lose that weight and gain some speed & strength back. Kid bought into it and it's going to pay off for the Browns. And Orchard just flew in without hesitation or trying to sit their "reading" indecisively. Williams wants QBs to fear the blitz from all kinds of angles and places. If you keep trying to figure out who is coming from where you start to mistime the plays.

Yeah Ags, there's a reason coaches often bring up how important experience is to a player's improvement. In particular, it improves their ability to recognize quicker and play faster. And like you said, if a player also achieves all of his position specific off-season strength and conditioning/fitness goals - it's the meatball on spaghetti...

5th rounder, flugs.. Tank was 147th overall, 12th pick of the 5th round by Buffalo, waived 8/1/12 and picked up by CLE same day.

That's the range for a player who's barely roster-able. For him to continue here is an accomplishment given athletic limitations.

Yes, Tank was a world BMX champion as a kid, but equally relevant to the NFL is my stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

There's no doubt it's an accomplishment for a 5th round draft pick to stick around in the NFL since 2012 - even if most of it has been in a reliable special teams role. However, I still don't think all that is working to Carder's advantage in the competition for the starting MLB job. I think Carder's 1st step instinct has remained in question, which Tour alluded to (regarding the quick decisions and acting on them w/ the problem of him being wrong half the time). I'm getting the impression Carder hasn't shown his position coach (or our DC) that he is much ahead, if any, of Schobert despite how many more training camps and regular seasons he's been here.

Camp reports suggested Schobert was really playing well and our 1st preseason game was indicative of more of the same. It's nice to see what a year of experience can do for a guy like this who was drafted in the 4th round.
