Age of NFL starting Quarterbacks

Here are the ages as of the beginning of next season of the starting NFL Quarterbacks. A few of these guys may not actually be their teams starting QB then, but this is as best as I can do at this point. In order of oldest to youngest:

Pats: Tom Brady 40

Saints: Drew Brees 38

Cards: Carson Palmer 37

Giants: Eli Manning 36

Steelers: Ben Roethlisberger 35

Chargers: Phillip Rivers 35

Bears: Jay Cutler 34 (see below for Barkley)

Packers: Aaron Rodgers 33

Chiefs: Alex Smith 33

Ravens: Joe Flacco 32

Falcons: Matt Ryan 32

Interestingly, there is a 3 year gap here:

Redskins: Kirk Cousins 29

Dolphins: Ryan Tannehill 29

Bengals: Andy Dalton 29

Lions: Matt Stafford 29

Vikings: Sam Bradford 29 (see below for Bridgewater)

49ers: Colin Kaepernick 29

Bills: Tyrod Taylor 28

Panthers: Cam Newton 28

Colts: Andrew Luck 28

Seahawks: Russell Wilson 28

Browns: RGIII 27

Bears: Matt Barkley 27

Texans: Brock Osweiler 26

Raiders: Derek Carr 26

Jags: Blake Bortles 25

Broncos: Trevor Siemian 25

Eagles: Carson Wentz 24

Vikings: Teddy Twatwater 24

Cowboys: Dak Prescott 24

Bucs: Jameis Winston 23

Titans: Marcus Mariota 23

Rams: Jared Goff 22

Half of the playoff teams then come with 6 out of the 11 oldest QBs.

What does that tell us?

What it tells me is unless you think you have that can't miss guy out of college you plug other holes and try to find a vet to run the team until you find "the guy".

Interesting stuff...

Boiled down it says to me you only get to be an old starter, if you're good... very good... to great.

The other stark point is how much turnover at the top of the QB pyramid there is going to be in the next 3-5 years. Which brings us back to Gip's follow up question: How many teams will look to secure their future franchise this year and what pick will they invest?

One team in this list's top tier pops out to me as most likely to spend aggressively... Arizona with the 13th overall pick. The combo of Palmer's age, injury history and recent performance level should prompt them to aggressively seek their future. And they are the one team above the noted three-year gap that seem most poised to win now should their QB situation be elevated.

The Cards' problems are:

  • the lack of a clear, "ready Day one" QB prospect;
  • they are too far down to be a Browns trade partner;
  • the #2 and 3 teams, SF and CHI, are high, QB-need teams as well; and
  • the QB needy Jets at #6.

SF carries the added unknown of a new HC coming into the picture as does JAX in the #4 slot.

The question ends up being what it always is... individual team evaluations of the QB talent available and where they belong in the 2017 prospect pecking order followed by an assessment of whether their need justifies the elevation of any prospect over those they rank above that prospect.

Except, note this: of those 6 "old" QBs that are in the playoffs.....5 of them are still with the team that drafted them: BR, Brady, Rodgers, Ryan, Eli (well...Eli not drafted by Giants...but he was acquired in a day or two of the day he was drafted). Only Alex Smith has changed teams. (originally with 49ers)

Agree. Cardinals with Palmer seem to be the team most in need of an imminent replacement. While Brady is 3 years older, it seem that Palmer has 3 more years of wear and tear on him.

The Cardinals may have about as bad a record of drafting QBs as the Browns do though. Since taking Neil Lomax in 1981, their best QB pick was Jake Plummer.

They had major misses with the likes of Matt Leinert and Kelly Stouffer.

Of course, they are the team that drafted Josh McCown in 2002.

So, they are definitely in the market. The question is will it be the draft....or the after market.

Garappolo is 25. Year older than Wentz, year younger than Carr.

Carr and Grop can be the new Brady and Manning vying for AFC supremecy for the next decade.

Or we could draft RGIV because he beat Alabama ... or Brady Quinn II cause he won a couple college games and went to Mentor.

Or we can pay a high price for the next Scott Mitchell/Ryan Mallet....and pass on the next Aaron Rodgers.

Interesting read plus you have to factor in the team personnel, coaching, front office as to the QBs listed and their success or failure in the NFL.

I'm looking into the future on some of the under 30 group and wondering how many will even make it to 35 or maybe just be journeyman...or the next BROWNS starting QB. ;)

Panthers: Cam Newton 28...has had a lot of pounding with his running style

Colts: Andrew Luck 28....still good but still can't catch Peyton

Seahawks: Russell Wilson 28....will go to 35

Browns: RGIII 27....done, please

Bears: Matt Barkley 27

Texans: Brock Osweiler 26.....ooop$

Raiders: Derek Carr 26....might make 35

Jags: Blake Bortles 25....might be great on the right team

Broncos: Trevor Siemian 25...?

Eagles: Carson Wentz 24....?

Vikings: Teddy Twatwater 24

Cowboys: Dak Prescott 24....has a good supporting cast

Bucs: Jameis Winston 23....bright future but maybe Cam II?

Titans: Marcus Mariota 23....better than I expected

Rams: Jared Goff 22....maybe the second best QB in LA next year?
