The special teams are excellently coached, and they play very, very smart.

As I watched the game, it seems that, to me, the Browns offense is really going to score points.

The offensive line, sure, has some coordination problems.

Irving looks a lot stronger, needs more practice. That bad snap was atrocious.

Ah, the defense. More coordination problems... those can be fixed. What impressed me, was that both

sides of the ball showed the ABILITY to make some kick ass big plays. That's different from in the past.

I love the path they are on. We'll see if it is a huge success the first season.

I've seen previous years when a game could easily turn into a rout. But it was another close game. And,

it's still a practice game. That's why they have them. And the Browns have new systems, new players,

new coaches. The coordination problems are fixable. No worries here.

Now, the tackling. Seems to me, the Falcon oline got away with a lot of holds. Make that LOT.

Look, the defense is making plays. And it's showing a lack of coordination. And, it's showing that Gilbert

still plays like he doesn't get it. There, I tried to be nice.

Tackling. You don't have to teach that in training camp. And some of the kids are tackling a te high.

A big rb high. No workee. But that's teachable, unless it's Gilbert you're teaching. A lot needs cleaned up,

that's how it always is. But the talent is there, and the final roster will be impressive, and the choices

hard as hell to make in some positions.

I don't care about the bunch of yards given up - it's prefreaking season. A lot of players won't make the final

roster. But once the regular season starts, I expect few mistakes overall, at least after a few real games.

Oh, yeah - the secondary. Needs coached up. Young kids ... playing too far off at the wrong times.

3rd and 2, and played 7? yards off? I figured it was some confusion going on.

The players have mentioned that they are still learning. I'd bet the defensive front seven

will get some serious coaching this next week, on hand to hand combat to avoid the holding that was going on, and not often enough called.

I will be po'd if Kindred ends up on the practice squad - he'll be gone like yesterday.

Cal, I don't know what game you were watching, but the stats say- it was a blowout. It was said earlier it looked like a bunch of amputees trying to make arm tackles- 100% agreement there.

Learning? Did you say learning? They've been playing football since grade school (maybe not Ogbah). Tackling is a fundamental skill- and I sure didn't see good fundamentals.

MHO- the defense is currently a train wreck, and needs to improve drastically to even be considered mediocre.

About anything I was going to say about the game has already been touched on except the excellent punting game with Andy Lee. Always helpful for any team to have a great punter. Booming punts with lots of hang time which translated into quick tackles and minimal punt returns.

Yay!! We have a great punter. :)

There may be improvement on offense but the

big problem is on defense. The offense will never

have time to score as teams will simply run the ball

down the Browns throats. Massive holes were opened up

yesterday by the Falcons O-line. Teams will control the ball

with the run and kill the clock.

The defense is simply awful especially against the run but

we have come to accept that. Since they came back in

1999 the Browns have not stopped the run.

*****************************************

I don't care about no stinkin stats in exhibition season, Mr. Hoorta. And scorewise, it was not any kind of blowout.

I remember games when it was 42-6, and they couldn't muster up any kind of offense or defense.

And I don't think they've been learning the current offensive and defensive system since grade school. Could I be wrong???

In the past, I saw defenses that could NOT play. Now, I see a defense that CAN, except right now, they are missing assignments, miscommunicating, whatever. But I also saw where they, ...at times... have kicked ass on both sides of the ball.

I don't see lack of ability - I see lack of coordination, missed assignments, etc.

Of course there are going to be kinks in implementing all this stuff. I worry about inability in preseason,

not kinks with ability. A lot of young players, new coaches, new systems... it's a given.

Come regular season, and they haven't improved... that is time to start being careful about food and drink

while watching.

Just finished the 1st half, and there was a lot to like on offense and a lot to dislike on defense.......... "Danny Shelton is still in the game" took me by surprise as the 3rd qtr started, and says a lot to me about what the coaches think of our 1st rounder's play so far.

The problem with the defense was never the NT position.

Metcalf was important at one time for us... as was his Dad for StL. There's a long line of important players who were great punt returners... Deion... Upchurch... Bullet Bob... Floyd Little... It's a job where quicks and speed can minimize injury potential.

But I hear ya... all things being equal I'd rather a 2nd string "specialist" emerge. Unfortunately...

Kick off returns? Different story...

I liked Metcalf but all remember about his returns was fumbling the ball. The guy has got to have the most long yard returns with a fumble. Use to drive me crazy.

after watching some of this game (i'm no game wizard....don't break down plays etc.) i can see where there is some optimism from some here. i agree with hoorta where he said RG3 will be the least of the browns' probs if he stays healthy. my concern watching this is that i can't tell if the hawks are that bad a team (who really thinks they will contend?) or are the browns avg. +?

crowell looked good at points so far, but it is preseason and i remember for the last couple of years regular season he has done shit, so......

i like nassib. he was prob the only pick this year i did like. rest of the D, esp. the back end, looks terrible and are going to get smoked in the reg season.

look, my prob isn't with any one or more players (except maybe our rbs.....who said duke johnson has great hands?) it's with the lack of OVERALL talent on this team given the number of picks over the last decade. sure different regimes BUT really? farmer and pett defensive minded, drafting dbs in record #s. anything to show for it? our stud DE got traded away cuz coaches are too concerned about scheme instead of letting a guy put his hands in the dirt and get after it. soooo many inexcusable basic stoopid mistakes by the FO, the coaches and the players who seem to me get paid and then put it on cruise control like : "i ain't gettin hurt for this team." no sense of urgency anywhere, yet, we the fans continue to plug along and support this fraud. that being said, this is my team and i'll root for them no matter what. but just like in my biz/personal life i expect better out of people i associate with. i doubt if you'd ever see someone under me laughing and holding his dick while an account rolled out the door.

but anyhoo. i'll give this guy a shot like i've given the past how many others try and turn this ship around. i think haslam wants the best for the city and wants to bring a contender to cleveland in football form. maybe he needs to hire consultants who have actually won something to come in and give this team some 'shine'?

IMHO, there is no way a coaching staff throws a starter out with the scrubs just to keep the stats close. Either they wanted him to get more reps to get better, or to get in better football condition - or both.

Danny isn't the problem with the defense, but he isn't the solution either ...... yet (hopefully)

Its not coordination, its talent. OLine has several guys who arent "good enough" to step up and take the job. So they are rotating em until, hopefully, someone plays well. Right now, that hasnt happened. Cam Erving is terrible. Stop making excuses for him. He sucked last year, and so far, sucks this year and it aint gonna change in a week....

Ah, the defense. More coordination problems... those can be fixed. What impressed me, was that both

sides of the ball showed the ABILITY to make some kick ass big plays. That's different from in the past.

Wait a minute....they look worse this year and, suddenly, it's coordination???!!???.....but last year it was coaching???......Bull crap.....they have a dearth of talent and NOT ONE SINGLE DIFFERENCE MAKER.....not one. They were in position, time and time again(like last year) to make the plays, but failed to tackle. Falcons ran over, around and through these guys and there were horrible attempts to tackle....that is effort, skill and talent that is missing....not freaking coordination.....coordination is getting them in place to tackle, BUT THEN, its all on the player to do it....good players do and bads players dont.....and our players aint getting it done.....next week is their last practice, do you expect some type of miraculous turnaround ina week?.....

Interviewing the players, they are having FUN playing football as a TEAM. When it comes together...

this team is going to be exciting to watch. Much work must be done.

Getting your ass stomped aint fun for anybody. Hues practices may be fun, but the games?.....I doubt it....

I love the path they are on. We'll see if it is a huge success the first season.

They always have new players, new systems, new coaches. Its that darned talent part we keep leaving out of the equation...

Now, the tackling. Seems to me, the Falcon oline got away with a lot of holds. Make that LOT.

You're from another planet.....we were bouncing off their players....getting dragged around....completely whiffing......there were NO HOLDS associated with all those missed tackles.....(maybe Jim Oneill was watching, then you could just blame him...eh??)

Look, the defense is making plays.

No its not. It cant get off the field. 20 to 40 in TOP. Couldnt stop em on any third downs....they marched up and down and up and down the field....no plays were made dude.....

Oh....Nassib went completely 100% unblocked on one play and did get a sack.....lucky him....

. And it's showing a lack of coordination. And, it's showing that Gilbert

still plays like he doesn't get it. There, I tried to be nice.

Yep. Gilbert sucked just like the rest of em. So, he's bad due to talent, but the others are bad due to coordination??.....and none of them are bad due to coaching?.....or is that part of coordination?

Tackling. You don't have to teach that in training camp.

And, oh how you guys screamed cause Pettine didnt teach it in training camp.....remember?.....I do....

Im sick of hearing excuses Cal.....it's preseason or its a new staff, bad coaches, bad scheme, new scheme, too early in the season, too late in the season, they're tired from running to the sidelines, they're tired from playing a season, too many young guys gotta mature, guys are hurt, Pettines too rigid, Oneills too dumb, blah blah blah...... just wait just wait just wait......

A lot of players won't make the final

roster.

Duh.....and we just got creamed by a bunch of guys who wont make their roster either.....so there's that

It will come together. But I see a football TEAM that is wanting to kick ass, and is loving football, CONFIDENT, and playing

like it.

For the first time, I don't see a terrible lack of talent......This are looking up.

Clearly, you are blind to the truth.....

But the coaches have a lot of work to do this week.

Meanwhile, Mingo made some real nice plays.

***EDIT***

Mud:

I'm trying to say I see a big difference now. Josh Cribbs used to talk about the problem of

players who didn't care, were not being professional, etc... and coaches that didn't have

a disciplined structure. Said it was tought to win a team game when not everybody cares

about winning.

That is the kind of thing that impresses me now. That's gone. Frustration is understandable, but

going all wild and woolly Eyore isn't helping anything, and isn't a good predicter of improvements

in the Browns, or more like, the alleged lack of improvements.

I see a huge difference in how these coaches approach football, and the same difference in this

entire team, with a few exceptions. Everybody knows the defense was breaking. But look at the score.

It was NOT 46 to 3.

Tackling is common sense, toughness and ability. Tackling a big te above his waist... ? When there are gaps

and players are out of position, sure, they aren't close enough to make the play, and the best they can do is

try the one arm almost might have had a chance non-tackle.

If, by the second or third regular season game, you still see what we have now - mistakes, etc etc etc...

then I'll join you in being disgusted. Right now, it's an implementation process, and nobody is more frustrated

with the past than I have been.

Just freakin let it go. Give Hue and co a freakin chance. Until then, I don't think you and others looking

in the right direction for a big change in Browns football fortunes.

^^^ THIS. You said it way better than I could Mud. At least we're on the same page. In person, it was a total debacle- short of Pryor & Barnidge's TDs, and Nasib's unblocked sack. The paying customers agreed- because by the end of the game- I've seen more people in the stands at High School games.

Yeah- it may only be preseason- but the run defense blew dead worms- the Fal-coons ran at will on us, left, right, middle- didn't matter. If there was any improvement from last year- I sure as hell didn't see it. Add in around zero pressure on the opposing QB- another deficiency from last year that looks like will be no better.

I'll give cal props on being the ultimate opptimist.......wish i had more of it in me.

Just don't get where anyone SEES that upside unless ur in the huddle or in berea in meetings. I see maybe 10 guys that could play as a starter on the pats or other championship caliber teams. Watched the seahawks vs. vikes last night and neither the hawks or the browns could hold a candle to the intensity i saw on that field.

Hey i hope hue is the guy and he can turn this around but let's be real for right now.

I just never quit. Never. One time, I was teaching Bible school to a young bunch of 10 yr old boys,

and there were three verses I decided to have them memorize. They just couldn't get it right.

Finally, they said they gave up, let's go play football. I just stared at em with my Clint Eastwood glare,

they got quiet.

I went over got an old dictionary, took out my pocket knife, and cut the words "give" "up" and "quit" out of it.

and gave them the dictionary. Said "this is your class dictionary, GOT IT? It doesn't have no stinkin

words "give""up" or "quit". So, they worked together to learn em that class.

You boys want me to make you one, too? LOL

Ya know what...it's not all doom and gloom.

Our first string Offense hasn't been too bad. And perhaps Coleman &/or Gordon can make it better.

Our first string Defense improves just by replacing Gilbert with Haden.

Who knows what final roster cuts might bring. Maybe we could add a stop-gap DLineman...Center....Tackle....or Safety. (who knows)

It's not impossible that we be a fairly good team.

We have a serious lack of talent on defense at many positions. This can all change, but it doesn't look good. We need multiple guys to have bust out years, and while this isn't impossible, I'd say the odds are most definitely against it. For one, Shelton needs to be impactful. He's a first rounder, so time to play like it. Rookie year is over...time to kick ass.

Nate Orchard has to step up and get the sacks we so desperately need. Xavier Cooper has to pressure the qb AND stop the run. Kruger isn't good, but if he can get back to double digit sacks, we're much better off. Problem is, he doesn't have anybody opposite to assist him. WELL, nobody PROVEN. Ogbah definitely could impact the game, as could Nassib. Rookies has proven every year to have the capability of immediately helping their teams...maybe we can actually draft people that do this.

God we need Joe Haden. Healthy, confident Joe to be exact. Our secondary terrifies me, and I am scared that we just won't be able to get off the field OR force the necessary turnovers.

Nassib looks a lot faster than people said he was, and this is great news. His motor is as advertised, and it's pretty obvious that he can be special. Maybe not right away, but with that kind of work ethic and size...watch out.

Talent? You talking talent? We don't need no talent! Why we got us Dak Prescott!

We didn't?

My (Browns) bad. :D

Ha!....hilarious.....

well, sometimes you just have to have the courage to see through the fog

of despair, and watch a great change happen with the Browns. This year.

Sorry, I BELIEVE.

https://youtu.be/76Hi6uf0fiM

And, sometimes, you have to have the courage to speak the truth....even if it's not what you wished for....

I'll give cal props on being the ultimate opptimist.......wish i had more of it in me.

Hey i hope hue is the guy and he can turn this around but let's be real for right now.

Exactly....love Cals optimism( I used to have that too).....just not seeing the things he's seeing.....like the D making big plays....or an even game.....or improvements from last season......

Yes, Pryor and RGIII look like a step forward....but the O line and D erase that immediately.....

I just never quit. Never.

No one is quitting or giving up.....you're blind to the positives Ive listed in my good, bad ugly thread and just choose to deny the negatives that are glaringly obvious.....

Denial is not healthy....

The only thing Ive quit doing is making excuses for these guys and painting pictures of roses.....Im now willing to point to weaknesses and call the Browns out on them......so, instead of me "telling" everyone how great they "will be someday", Im taking the SHOW ME route.......and, so far, they havent done enough to give me that confidence....

For years now, Ive sat on the edge of my seat...excited to see the new players...new system....new coaches....etc. And, in most cases, I was genuinely excited. I bought in!!!! But, with this regime, so far, I dont have that feeling. At all.

Its not quitting or giving up. Its just me, with my hand out, asking them to give me something Ive never seen yet. But they just are giving me more of what feels like the same.....

so....no quit here....just the truth....a dose of reality.....what my eyes see.....

Well if you discount the 2nd half due to so many substitutions, at least the score was close until then.

It's usually the 3rd game of preseason that is most telling.

Correct....our ones played their ones better than our twos played their twos.....

Third game is it....full dress rehearsal....and the last practice game for the ones....so, this week, we should see what we are gonna see on week one......
