THE BROWNS BOARD

Hard knocks

The Browns turn down the show, and it's their right to per league rules with a rookie head coach. Is Pettine overdoing the no Manziel distractions? Good or bad idea to turn it down?

Very good idea.

i wonder if haslam's wife will pitch another show to the travel channel? i watched the one season of "on the road with the cleveland browns" which showed the logistics of moving the team and their equipment back and forth, but also had glimpses of players and their family life.

i think it's good they declined hard knocks. maybe in two years when we've been to the playoffs and there is a solid foundation set they could do it, but as others have said there is too much going on with position battles that could really screw with the mentality of some of these players. play hard for the cameras and suck wind during the games, seen it many times on that show. guys want to be starring in hollywood and turn out to be sweeping peanut shells at an off-broadway brew ha ha.

I agree. Rookie head coach. No nonsense. Farmer and Pet keep preaching about winning football games ... lets concentrate 100 % on that. If we win, we will get all the attention you ever wanted, and for all the right reasons.

We are the lovable Cubs of the NFL, and Johhny M has the potential to be Pete Rose, Pistol Pete and Broadway Joe all rolled into one.

This thing is going to explode.

But only if we win. So let PetFarm do their thing and set the tone first.

As a Browns fan I am glad they didn't go through with it, as someone who works in content marketing proffesionaly I wish they would have agreed to it because there are so many big stories to be told.. Johnny Manzel - the rookie media phenom, Brian Hoyer - the hometown batteling to keep his dream alive, Josh Gordon - potential superstar who can't get out of his own way, Pettine- Blunt Force Trauma, Shannahan - coming out of his fathers shadow, Ben Tate - connecting to fans Joe Haden - cusp of star - and on and on and on...

Yeah I really liked On the road, and that's why I would also selfishly liked to have seen them do it like Utzie and WSS said. But I can definetly see the negative impact on all the young players. I'm actually surprised Halsam didn't come down with an executive decision to do it from the business standpoint

I like the idea of "circling the wagons" to dial in to what needs to be done to make the Browns competitive. Per usual, camp begins without a proven QB leader and there is a rookie coach facing a steep learning curve. Pettine has proved himself on the defensive side of the house and hopefully his competence can translate into an ability to work effectively with his offensive coordinator.

The JFF "distraction" while viewed by some as a negative could ultimately be a positive shot in the arm for the entire squad if he comes into camp and crushes it.

As mentioned above, "hard cocks" or not, the Browns will be closely analyzed

The Browns' FO has already redone the Browns' website promising to post more vids and pics. If they do a really good job then the Browns' website will be almost as good as Knocks...just not in documentary form.

So far I'm getting a good taste for all things Browns at the site and OTAs just ended. Going from game to game should be killer.

Fuck Knocks. The Browns can do a better job documenting their team if it's done correctly.

Fwiw, the Jets' Knocks showed Wrecks for what he is...a loudmouth with no butt in his drawers.

I would have loved it. Fuck the baby steps' bullshit. Man up or not, the pressure is there regardless. We aren't the Jets or any other team that has done the show. With the movie that just came out and then Manziel being drafted, with West and Gilbert... Fuck, I can't believe they blew the opportunity to capitalize on that much exposure. Whether or not the die hards that have been here for years on this merry-go-round are ready or not- we're riding the wave right now regardless. Go with the flow and ride the momentum all the way to the promised land. It's fucking lame to turn down HardKnocks. If we suck and Manziel turns out to be the next Quinn, Hardknocks won't even look in our direction again. We should have seized it.

Hawkins was asked about it at Browns camp. He said when they had the Bengals on,

it was such a distraction, and some players played to the cameras, etc. He laughed, but

said it was the right decision.

@POG

It shouldn't escape you that a film maker can make a genius look like he has shit for brains. Letting Knocks in the door this year could set the Browns back years depending on the choices of what may be a non Brown fan. Knocks made the Jets look like the joke they are, with Pettine being the exception.

I'm with Pettine and the NFL on this one...first year HCs can opt out. There is good reason for that option and it has nothing to do with manning up. It has to do with giving a new HC a chance to set his style before an outside filmmaker gets a chance to take shots at him.

You just want a wannabe (Manziel) to get some face time. Your boy with get his time in the sun. So far Hoyer is out shinning him according to today's tweets from camp, btw.

Manziel is not 'my boy', I wanted Derek Carr, by which all accounts he's looked sterling.

I am on board with Manziel though, he was my second choice of rookie QBs. I'm shocked we locked him up as late as we did too. He's talented, but, Hoyer is better and ready to go(barring a setback) and that is the perfect situation. If Hoyer can't hack it then Manziel comes in and buys the Coaching Staff and FO some more time.

I'm rooting for Hoyer but only if he's the best QB. I like anything Browns related and a Hardknocks show that is forced to make a coaching staff that takes the NFL by storm and gets the Browns into the playoffs would be hard pressed to find a way to make a so called genius look like an idiot.

You've either got it or you don't. Rex Ryan is a silly moron anyways, Hardknocks didn't need any help to make that apparent.

The point is, the Browns have a new coaching staff and a bunch of new players.

Pettine said he doesn't have a solid handle on the overall team just yet, and didn't want

the distraction.

In other words, a young team with new system, etc etc...doesn't need the distraction.

Sure, if you have had a system in place for a good while, then go with it.

The Bengals had the system in place, most of the talent in place...why not?

Why is that so tough to understand?

Great decision... and the only one consistent with closing Rookie Mini to national media.

I guarantee, next year it will happen.

Yup... barring another one-year coaching stint, unless another team volunteers for 2015, I think we will be "volunteered"...

Speaking of coaching changes...

"John Mara said the Giants would be on Hard Knocks over his dead body so he'd force Coughlin into retirement in order to be exempt."

i don't think there'll be another one year coaching stint. i think haslam saw the dysfunction and the inability to work with the previous FO and decided to make a clean cut which most times means the people they hired are gone along with them.

haslam looks like he trusts farmer and pettine well enough to let them try to build something. now if that trust only lasts a couple of years then so be it. but they drafted a kid that will eventually become the franchise QB here and i think haslam will let this staff mold him and the team into a strong, physical team. hey if we go 8 and 8 i'll be happy and so should haslam considering our recent W-Ls. it's how they play the game that will determine the longevity of pettine's stint here as HC. if they go out and look like the fumbling bumbling keystone cops, nobody is going to toleratethat. but if they go out play hard as hell and look better overall from top to bottom, how can you argue against improvement?

hard knocks would have been a disaster this year in trying to achieve that, IMO.

The Falcons were just announced as the team who will be on Hard Knocks.

I think they have an interesting story line. Super Bowl contenders prior to the season which turned into a terrible season and a top 10 pick. Can Matty Ice really cut it as a top tier QB and lead the team to the SB? Will Julio come back healthy? How's their defensive rebuild going to go after they were awful last season? Should be interesting.

I can't remember what player on the Browns was part of Hard Knocks on another team, but I remember reading in a previous article the player saying that with hard knocks in the building, and this is from his own experiance and observations, players pay too much attention to the cameras instead of football. As in they are expecting the cameras to be there so they dressing up, planning things for the cameras to catch them and get them on TV.

It was the right call dude. There was almost zero upside to doing the show yet potential for tremendous downside. Pettine doesn't want to run a clown show, that was a good job out of him.

I'm glad to see most everybody is on board with that call by pettine. Shows there's some Browns fans who get it. Best case scenario was that people watched the show and still didn't give a fuck about the Browns cause they haven't won shit. Worst case scenario is that it could have given more ammunition to the people that say the Browns are hopeless. Those camera's would "NEVER" have left Manziels side....who the fuck thinks it's a good idea to have camera's following that kid around? I don't care about his partying cause he seems to be putting his time in. But at the same time we don't need camera's catching that kid getting a blowjob from some Cleveland Strippers behind the practice field. As funny as that would be.
