No but you could draft football players, guys that may not be the strongest or the fastest but understand how to play the game.

The prevailing thought seems to be that we won't be competitive right away and that this coaching staff has more than enough experience to coach these guys up.

When they reach their peak, they'll be worth the wait supposedly.

You mean like the guy who recorded a penn state record 15.5 sacks last year?

Like the guy who won big ten defensive player of the year?

Like the guy who won the Lombardi and Hendricks awards, signifying the nations best DE and best lineman/linebacker respectively.

Yeah, what a bummer that we didn't draft a "football player".

Im not upset with you. I'm upset with myself for expecting anything other than uninformed crybaby dog shit from any post that starts with 'BaconHound'

either Nassib or Ogbah, fine...but both? Why? Nassib is even more of a strict 4-3 DE. If all of you were deadset that Bosa couldn't play in our 3-4...boy do i have some bad news for you cause both these guys are far worse in open space than Bosa. And neither Ogbah or Nassib are good run defenders. Yeah they can learn it...but if we were looking for a DE at OLB'er that we'd have to teach to be a 3-4 olb'er...than why the fuck did we not take Bosa? Or why the fuck did we not take Spence? I don't understand this.

Holy hell I love this kid. Still question the scheme fit but damn the film is good.

Watch the tape against OSU. He gets to the QB in a hurry. He never gets pushed upfield against the run. I saw a couple plays where OSU had to send EZE over to help in pass pro. He was forcing quick throws and scrambles all night. His NFL.com draft profile says Nassib can "be mauled by power." I see zero evidence of that whatever, unless OSU just didn't have maulers, which I doubt.

Whatever this kid is, I wouldn't call him "developmental." Our only issue is developing him to our scheme. This kid had 15.5 sacks last year. For comparison's sake, in Von Miller's last season as a 4-3 end (what Nassib was last year), he had 17. Now, this is the best pass rusher in the league we're talking about here and I don't think the Big 12 holds a candle to the Big 10, at least for offensive linemen.

I'd also note that Nassib had all 15 sacks in 10 games, at least according to his game logs on ESPN.com. They don't show any stats for PSU's final 3 games. Is that correct? He didn't have any games without a sack so he would have put up better numbers than Von when extrapolated over 13.

Nassib will be a DE in a 3pt when we go to four man fronts. Probably could have had him a bit lower, but it is what it is.

As far as I know, I don't think Von ever played as a rush end at A&M. I remember him either dropping in coverage or standing up off the edge. Nothing like what Penn State asked of Carl.

In 2009 (I think 2008 too, but definitely 09) he played pure DE in Joe Kines' defense. He switched to OLB in 2010, his sack number dropped to 10, and he won the Butkus Award.

In 2007 (and maybe 08), he was at OLB then as well, I believe. They could never decide how to use them, but then again he played for two head coaches and three DCs.

Negative. He won't be a linebacker candidate. At least, I can't see that transition happening at all.

Obu, yes. Carl, no.

Don't remember if he was standing up, but I did see him drop at least once and he said in an interview tonight that he dropped a time or two in every game last season, FWIW.

I think you throw 15-20 more pounds on him (he showed up to PSU at 215 and is 275 now so who knows if he's at his ceiling or if he can still grow comfortably), sacrifice some of the pass rushing abilities, and you've got yourself a really good, complete, 3-4 DE.

I worry more about Ogbah's transition than this one, but Hue said Ogbah stood up a lot in college.

I wouldn't put any additional weight on Carl. His game is what the tape shows a LE in a four man front which we'll play plenty of. He'll give a tackle fits here and there, he'll probably be great for your linebackers to that side and string out any stretch plays or curb them back into pursuit. Trying to do to much to this kid is exactly why I hated what Pettine did with my boy Billy Winn.

True, but most of what I remember were Rob Ryan-esque, third-and-long, stand around looks more than an LB assignment.

Agree... if he adds through maturation, fine, but don't pack it on and lose his burst.

Any thought on Zettel? When I watched Carl's tapes, I found myself being distracted by Zettel fairly often. Actually ended up feeling that he had more value potential in a 3-4 than Nassib did.

When I first heard the Nassib pick, my immediate thought was 'why not Zettel'.

I think because Horton realizes he'll be playing more four down than usual and went with the pick that would provide more immediate returns. As for my thoughts on Zettel, I can't say I've watched him extensively. This draft season has been a rough one for me, I haven't watched nearly half of the players I wanted to.
