THE BROWNS BOARD

Changes / Improvements during the Bye-Week

I'm sitting here trying to figure out what fucking games your watching? Have you watched a Browns game yet this season?

Do you think they drafted Manziel to sit him indefinitely? At some point he is going to play. I'd rather have him get his shot at 1-2 with obvious problems on this team then have Hoyer go 6-10 and then see Johnny start 1-3 next year.

Hoyer hasn't been the issue through 3 games but at the end of the year if Manziel hasn't played it will be a QB battle all over again and is that what this franchise needs?

I see what the Jets are going through right now giving Geno Smith his chance and it has set them back 2 years.

If the offense continues to play like this, in particular Hoyer, I hope we never see Manziel play.

I'd love this to be true but traditionally, and maybe this is where the new Browns will be different, a QB drafted in the 1st round plays in his first 2 seasons.

This has been true of everyone except for Aaron Rodgers in the last 10 years but he was sitting behind a hall of famer and face of the franchise

Hell, trade him tomorrow to the Vikings...they're on their 3rd string QB now. I'm sure they'd give us something good for him.

Not admitting they got duped....Cassel is on IR...Bridgewater just went to the locker room for xrays on an ankle injury. They need a QB now.

No the Browns would be admitting it. They have come out saying that Johnny's the guy, he's on pace, he's looking good, he's their guy. When we all know they now wish Jerry drafted him.

Excerpt from the above linked article:

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Browns may have re-thought the position, but that doesn’t mean they are making a change.

“In preseason, it made sense #Browns would reevaluate QB position after the bye. They have. It’s still Brian Hoyer. Not time for Manziel yet,” Rapoport tweets.

Usually people who say "we all know X" say so because they don't have any actual evidence to support their claims. What we do know is that:

a: Pettine said in an ideal world, a rookie QB would not start all season.

b: Hoyer is the 11th ranked QB in terms of QBR right now at 97.5. This is vastly improved from our QB play of recent years.

c: The Browns are losing close games because of the defense.

So given Pettine believes a rookie QB should sit, and that Hoyer is performing well, do you really think he or anyone else is regretting the Manziel pick, or is it just more likely that the scenario Pettine wanted for his QBs is becoming true? You could make a case for regretting picking Gilbert over Fuller, but not this nonsense.

So, according to your post, playing Geno Smith has set the Jets back 2 years......yet you promote playing JFF over a starter who's playing great......

That's probably the worst logic Ive ever heard.....lets pull the good QB, play the rookie and set the Browns back 2 years???....all so we can avoid a QB competition next year???

Competition is a GOOD thing.....not a bad thing..... 2 good QB's is what everyone wants....but you cant start em both....

Maybe it would be better just to have one good QB and a completely shitty backup....then we wouldn't even have to worry about those pesky QB battles and competitions between players......holy cow.....

Yes... except for the better part of eight, glorious quarters in 2013...

Maybe it's the all the years of nitrate ingestion?

Johnny Manziel is playing, if not tomorrow he'll start next year. I don't know what NFL you guys have watched over the last 10 years. Don't take my word for it, google QB's selected number 1. All but Aaron Rodgers and Philip Rivers saw significant starts in their 1st or 2nd season. Now Rodgers and Rivers were behind two Hall of Famers. It is inevitable that the guy you drafted in the 1st round plays. If he doesn't play it will be viewed as a wasted pick, not my rules just the way the NFL works.

Personally I would not have drafted Manziel but once you use a 1st round pick you're locked into playing the guy. EJ Manuel, Geno Smith, etc. were selected by a GM as their guy, they have to play. I'd rather quantify what he is and move forward then watch another 6-10 year knowing that at some point next season Manziel's playing.

I know some fans are hoping that a year of watching will make him more NFL ready, and for the teams sake I hope you're right, but if we are being honest a GM thought Tim Tebow was the next big thing and he at least was built like an NFL QB. For better or worse there is a "prototypical" NFL QB and that is what works. There are always exceptions but like RG3 and Vick it's hard to keep those exceptions healthy.

My take is that as soon as the season is beyond playoff reach (which might not happen at all, but if it does) JM will take over as QB1. I can still see them signing BH in the off-season and continue with the QB competition next summer. Nonetheless, the time will come when JF will be given his shot to lead this team to glory. Personally, he has shown me nothing to-date to lead me to believe that he has the skills to do so at the NFL level, but it's way too early to make projections. I would like to see Shaw continue to develop as well.

Poor timing on your Manuel/ Smith example as one was just benched and the other is only another bad game or two away from the pine.

Why do you ignore how well Hoyer is playing?

Why do you ignore that he gives us the best chance to win now?

The reason that highly drafted QBs tend to play early in their first season is that they are better than the other QB options that the team has. Generally they were options that led the team to the dismal record that earned them the high draft pick. Neither is the case in Cleveland.

As Frenchie points out, should we be eliminated from playoff contention at some point in the season, then stretching JM's legs may be a consideration, but until then.... no.

The Browns may one day be JM's team, it may even be next year, but this is Hoyer's team now...

More back on topic...

Apparently those of us looking for Pettine to be more hands-on in calling the D in-game will not have our wish granted.

"The Browns will devote part of the bye week to improving their surprisingly porous defense.

Just about all options are under consideration except for who makes the defensive calls and how they arrive at them."

http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2014/09/cleveland_browns_coach_mike_pe_6.html

"I think that the crowd noise affected us adversely there a little bit being down at the far end," Pettine said.

Oops. We were just trying to complicate it for Flacco like we did with Brees the week before. :)

My bye week adjustments would be:

* Come out featuring Crowell for one game and see if he explodes. 20 plus carries. Just once. Please.

Hmmm. But isn't Tate slated to return after the Bye? I'm curious to know how that will work when he's back. Wonder what the status is on his injury...

..Yeah, I think Tate will play.....as much as I want Crowell, I expect Pettine to keep him as the #3.....just WISH he would give him a game....

Official injury list is not out yet (required by Thursday?).

FWIW... Yahoo fantasy still lists Tate as "Out".

EDIT: Rotoworld just reported that Tate is practicing today and if medically cleared will start.

it's a nice feeling having too many good backs...saw an interview with Wilbert Montgomery the other day and he was basically saying Tate is still #1, but they can and will rotate quickly and try to find the hot hand.....a nice option to have....

Yes indeed. Crowell at #3 in depth is a good problem.

If the teams goes 6-10 because of offensive problems, he'll get a start this year. Right now as it stands, the only way we go 6-10 is if the D (and maybe ST) doesn't get their shit together.

You never know, we may see a monster this week(and not Crowell).....Tate just may come out blazing....seems there's a couple rooks getting all the play and talk and trying to take his job....maybe he'll be chomping to prove he's the best.......love the competition....

I think Billy is a good enough kicker for now. No need to get 1 in mid season. The blocked fg was not his fault and a missed 50 yarder in 22mph winds is tough. We just got spoiled having Dawson. It is what it is. The kicker is the least of our worries. I would get a long snapper asap. Get 2 and make them compete for a spot on the team. Woof Woof Browns. I love the team we have and they are comming together. Loud and proud. P.S I am making the trip to the Oakland and Cinci games and would like to hang out with some of you before the game.

Hellloooo. This,

Looks like the Brownies signed a long snapper today...practice squad guy.....

...so they're at least working toward making the change....

Then this,

It would definitely appear so.

Reading is a good thing.

Not really normal to carry a "long snapper" on the practice squad......so they're at least working toward making the change....

What ever happened to Ryan Pontbriand? Could use a guy like him right about now, but I suppose he's up in the years and retired.
