THE BROWNS BOARD

Changes / Improvements during the Bye-Week

Recommended Posts

Here's the start :

Pettine remained angry that the team had substitution issues and were twice called for having 12 men on the field on defense. He said had things been handled better on the sidelines, the team wouldn’t have had to burn timeouts.

Pettine had an “air it out” meeting with the staff Monday morning. With a coach who is as direct and honest as Pettine, that meeting might not have been the most pleasant.

Maybe he'll light the right fires.

I wonder how our Defensive performance correlates to who is calling the plays. For example, do we only suck when O'neil is calling the plays or is it just all the time?

I'm not too worried about Pettine or Shanahan. I worry about Tabor because our STs is playing very "boneheaded" this season thus far.

There's a tremendous difference between having an average defense with a coach like Pettine that has fielded elite squads. Or say a coach like Shurmur that honestly didn't give two shits so long as they didn't give up 40ppg and the offense completed those stupid rollouts on 3rd and short.

I like having a coach that wants/demands better and isn't afraid to get very vocal about it.

I'm so tired of this idea so many Browns fans buy into this fabricated hype that we have a good defense. It's average at best.

We have defensive talent. If you can't see that you don't know football, I'm just not sure why it's not coming together... Scheme, playcalling, gameplanning, poor execution, etc?

Maybe the long snapper has a sore knee, or shoulder, or

has been having muscle spasms in his back, or has

malaria.

Dang, all these negative jumps to conclusions....

wow.

you know how many 5 star CBs steve smith has owned in his career? backend of his career yeah maybe but i bet if they played NE revis would be on him....seattle sherman would be on him. i saw (not the game) but the replay of the play that cost us the game and haden go beat with speed...barely. BUT whitner was right there with the backside help to knock him out of bounds.

teams win games on huge clutch/lucky catches and plays.

the first game we should have won if we had played for 60 fucking mintues. sunday we should have won for other reasons besides calling out one single player. we SHOULD be 3-0.

just shut the fuck up.

Woulda, coulda, shoulda, but didn't! There are no moral victories in football! The fact is we are 1-2 and not 3-0, and while there has been improvements, until the Browns figure out how to finish off the opponent when they have the opportunitity to do so, they will continue to come up short! And yes I'm aware of Steve Smith owning 5 star CBs in his career. However; he is on the back 9 of his career, and you don't let someone past his prime beat you like that in clutch time! I've always been a Haden supporter, but he has been playing soft so far this year! I didn't say bench him! I said don't start him! At any rate he'd better figure it out before the Pukers come to town again, because I'm also sick of seeing him getting his ass owned by that punk ass Antonio Brown!

They need to get the penalties under control. Its not even about the illegal contact because its getting called on everyone. Its the illegal formation, holding, etc.

Funny our special teams used to be the only bright spot on the team and now its a joke. I think Benjamin has the moves, but hes not comfortable catching the punt with defenders running at him. I think his body language just seems like he is kind of hesitant and the catch always looks awkward. I would like to see Gabriel returning punts personally.

Nothing personal to West, but I want to see more of Crowell. I want to see Crowell running screen routes. Secondarys will have trouble getting him to the ground. I love the way this guy runs.

Cameron needs to make a bigger impact. Maybe its the scheme, maybe its a lack of motivation, but he just hasn't been that effective.

I've never thought about how Bye-weeks are assigned.

Apparently neither has Whitner since we share a Week 4 bye with Seattle and Denver and Cinci and Arizona and St. Louis...

"'The NFL sets it up,' (Whitner) said. 'If they don’t have any expectations for you, they give you a bye week early. If they expect you to go to the Super Bowl, they give you a bye week late.'"

More back on topic...

Apparently those of us looking for Pettine to be more hands-on in calling the D in-game will not have our wish granted.

"The Browns will devote part of the bye week to improving their surprisingly porous defense.

Just about all options are under consideration except for who makes the defensive calls and how they arrive at them."

Pettine will just stand over the DC's shoulder and whisper the plays into his ear so we can all pretend like the DC is still making the calls.

My bye week adjustments would be:

* Come out featuring Crowell for one game and see if he explodes. 20 plus carries. Just once. Please.

* Use Gilbert on punt returns. Benji has lost it and Gilbert can be great. Plus, he needs to earn his keep and build a little self confidence.

* Use Johnny as the new holder on extra points and FG's. Creates a whole new dimension and get's his head in the game. Plus, they'd have to account for him....and that would sure as hell cut down on the rush and give our guy a chance to get the kick off

* Keep Skrine as the starter. He's earned it and is playing pretty good ball.

* Just start Kirksey. The time is now, while we're still working thru the problems on D(not after). He's the future and can be an every down LB with a little experience. And Robinson is so very average, with little upside.

* Keep Sheard as your starter. He has been exceptional compared to what Mingo was giving us. Use Mingo to rest players or for passing situations only.

* Get that D line in synch. I dont know WHAT their problem is. The talent is there. Not sure if it's scheme, execution or effort, but they need to work it out ....... soon would be nice....

Dear Mr. Pettine:

The BB would like you to consider the following changes / improvements to the time during the Bye-week:

1) replace Mingo as a starter with Sheard (accountability)

2) review films of last year to determine why we've digressed in defending the run. I hope it's not Jackson/Ward. Jim O'Neil needs to fix things fast!!

3) get the CB's back to work on the basic fundamentals of receiver coverage

4) replace Benji on punt returns (accountability)

5) find out why every field goal or POT snap is inaccurate - Christian Yount may be an issue

6) look into a possible replacement for Billy Cundiff either now or at the end of the season

7) fire Chris Tabor immediately and start making people realize accountability matters

8) the team needs to rebound against Tennessee - make sure that they realize the critical importance of this game. Lose to the Titans and the two weeks would have been wasted. There must be a sense of urgency to fix our issues!

BB fans, please add you suggestions to this list

Very good! Billy Cundiff needs to be replaced as soon as possible. There are kickers out there.

I'm beginning to think that our ST and D coordinators may need to be upgraded during the off-season. Our coach shouldn't do two jobs (didn't we already make that mistake) and we definitely have the talent on those two units.

Too early to talk Coord. changes IMO... long way to go yet.

ST Coord. is on his third (?) regime now, I believe. So he has done something right. Tinkering with personnel is underway and ought to suffice.

Pettine's choice to take the reins to Pettine's D is O'Neil. That is not going to change after one season... and personally I would not want it to. I'm more than willing to invest a year in a DC's (and a D scheme's) growth to reap dividends down the line.

Well, it's a win now league and those coordinators need to demonstrate their ability to coach players and a system that works. I'm just not seeing that right now. Everything on D is not working right now. Running, passing, pass rush, it all needs to get a lot better because I'm not that invested in O'Neil.

As much as it pains me to say this, start Johnny Football. I don't think this team will win any more than 6 games this season and I want to see him make it or fail going into next year so the circus will be only one year.

Clearly it did not pain you enough...

I can't agree with starting Sheard and Kruger at the same time unless you're convinced the team you're facing runs on early downs.

Simultaneous Sheard + Krugs would be damn close to fielding a 5-man line...

Last time I can remember that as a base D in a game would be all the way back in George Allen's days as WSH's HC... I forget who it was he sprung it on, but it shut their run game down cold.

Win now? Keep changing Coord's every year and it'll be win never. And you seem unwilling to wait even a year...

Yeah because it's the QB that is losing us games.

Hoyer hasn't been the issue through 3 games but at the end of the year if Manziel hasn't played it will be a QB battle all over again and is that what this franchise needs?

I see what the Jets are going through right now giving Geno Smith his chance and it has set them back 2 years.
