The Team of the Decade, MLB

For regulars you may know that I have maintained a "Team of the Decade" thread for Pro Football for a few years now. That is based on a scoring system I devised whereby I gave a team 10 points for winning a championship, 6 points for losing a championship game, 3 points for losing a conference title game, and 1 point for making the playoffs in any given year.

I am going to apply the same system here. Bear with me as the changes in the playoff system that MLB has used over the years requires some adjustment in terms of applying my formula.

From 1903, the year of the first World Series, to 1968 there were ONLY 2 team competing in post season play, an AL champ an an NL champ. To be consistent, I gave the winner of the WS 10 points and the loser 6 points. Its just that no teams were awarded 3 or 1 points for that period.

After 1969 there were 4 teams in the playoffs, so 4 teams get points 10/6/3. After the playoffs expanded again in 1995 I then applied the 10/6/3/1 formula. So here are the points.....and the awarding of the mantle of "Team of the Decade" for MLB for every decade from the 1900s to now:

The 1970s is the closest Team of the Decade Race in history, with only 2 points separating the first and second place team.

(Oddly, the same is true in football, the 70s was the closest race...Steelers/Cowboys only 2 pts apart)

Tigers 3,6,3..............12 pts

Yankees 3, 1, 3........7 pts

Phillies 3, 1..............4 pts

Rays 1, 1, 1............3 pts

Brewers 3..............3 pts

If the Cardinals win the World Series, they will take over the lead for Team of the Decade. If they don't win, the Giants maintain the lead by 1 point.

The Red Sox will get either 6 or 10 pts...but those will be their first points of the decade....and would give them at best 5th place

Just a note: this was the 4th meeting in the World Series between the Red Sox and Cardinals. Other 4 or more WS matchups in history:

Yankees/Dodgers 11 times

Yankees/Giants 7 times

Yankees/Cardinals 5 times

Yankees/Braves 4 times

As/Giants 4 times

Tigers/Cubs 4 times

and now Red Xos/Cards
