He noted that Hoyer has exceeded his expectations. In the offseason, with Hoyer coming off the torn ACL and having only four starts under his belt, the Browns pursued Matt Schaub and offered the Redskins a mid-round pick for Washington's Kirk Cousins.

"I think it's happened a little bit faster than I thought it would,'' said Loggains. "After going through preseason and camp, I didn't know how comfortable he'd get with the offense or how fast it would happen. We were pleased with him when we got here. Kyle and I watched him on tape and he played well in those three or four games he played in last year. I'm happy where he's at and I think he can get a lot better.

Heading into the bye weekend, Hoyer is ranked No. 18 in the NFL with his 97.5 rating. He's completing 64.2 of his passes, hasn't thrown an interception in 156 passes and has three touchdowns. He's ranked ahead of Andy Dalton (21), Aaron Rodgers (22), Colin Kaepernick (24) and Tom Brady (33).

"He's a pro,'' said Loggains. "I've had the opportunity to coach a couple of these guys like Kerry Collins, Matt Hasselbeck and I'd put him in that group. The guy is a pro. Football is very important to him and outside of his family -- I hate to put words in his mouth -- but my assumption is it's probably the most important thing in his life.''

Loggains has sensed a change in Hoyer since he was named the starting quarterback.

"I saw him relax once the competition ended,'' said Loggains. "I think Brian is just more comfortable. He's relaxed. This is becoming his team. He's taking ownership in it and I think that's why he's done the job he has.''

What's more, Hoyer has displayed a natural ability to run the no-huddle offense, which has become a staple of the Browns' offense.

"It takes someone that has command of the offense because there are a lot of moving parts and we are substituting,'' said Loggains. "It has to have a guy that understands what the other 10 guys are doing. There are going to be times when we're going to be playing younger players, which we are on offense. He makes sure that those guys get set and they know what's going on, the snap count, all that burden falls on the quarterback.''

From what Loggains and Shanahan have seen so far, the future looks bright for Hoyer, who's 4-2 as the Browns' starter.

"Brian's had an opportunity to play for some really good football coaches,'' said Loggains. "He's got a great knowledge of the game and he's been trained well, so we feel like as he learns the system and understands defenses, and understands really the thought process that Kyle has and the offense, and the coaching staff, he'll continue to get better that way.''

And so will his new buddy.

Right now Brian is playing about like I expected. Far from spectacular, but even further from bad. I would describe his play as solid, and it warrants a 3-0 record if only for just a little help from one of the worst defenses in the NFL.

Yup... solid, first-do-no-harm, game manager with capability of cranking it up some, if needed.

Arm is adequate at best, wheels turn slower than I remember, but the head is first rate and he has very, very good play action skills.

Yea T, and more than 1 Super Bowl has been won with that style of QB play. Hopefully Pettine will waive his magic guru wand during the off week, and poof........ an NFL defense will emerge.

Ha! That statement was a joke....right?

Maybe... ;)

Not exactly the grouping I would prefer to see anyone lump Hoyer into... let alone one of his coaches.

It actually gave me a "waiting on Johnny" vibe when I first read it... *shudder*

"Why Johnny Ringo... You look like someone just walked over your grave."

We need to fix the defense. Surprisingly the offense is pretty good. In fact, they're better than anyone thought they'd be. So if the defense could stop the run and get Gilbert the hell out of there we easily could be 3-0.
