Sanders voters are the democrats of the future, apparently.

The gist of the article is that the 'social values war' of the last 50 years is basically over, so the US will be moving in to a period where conservatism is based around financial policy instead. Hillary voters tend to be more middle class, old, 'comfortable' people. These people don't want to upset the financial apple cart don't like Sanders' 'radical' plans and don't like what they see as handouts to scroungers - sound familiar?

What do people think? I think there's been plenty of support from people on here for a party that isn't giving away money like candy, but also isn't getting caught up in fighting tooth and nail to hang on to out of date social customs. It's just...Hillary and Trump both fit that to various degrees, and neither are really worth voting for.

"Neither are really worth voting for"!?!?

You did it now. Ed is going to show you.

As for the topic, I agree, because it's basically the little rant I've said a few times on here. Liberal social views become conservative. Conservative social views die out. "Gays are bad" won't win you an election.

Ed...serious question. If trump came to you and said melania's been somewhat derelict in her wifely duties and he just needs an old fashioned to get him through the next couple weeks. What do you do? He's not asking for eye contact or any gay shit like that....just a simple no eye contact handy.....you in?

Idk I could be the next Monica Lewinsky and make millions selling a book and doing interviews and such - it would be tempting.

Back to the original topic, I think you are correct Chris.

A cliché , but also a truism, that I've repeated often is that liberals tend to think of History beginning 40 years ago, but I guess everybody can do that.

Just look at the shift in global politics and government over the last hundred or so years.

I don't think that many people will actually change their acceptance of some of the social issues but will eventually get to the point that they throw up their hands and say well it really doesn't affect my life one way or the other so who cares. Still it's Human Nature for a Group A to be pissed off at Group B, so no matter what the parties will morph into in the coming centuries they will still hate each other.

;)

There probably won't be any huge swing to the military right until the economy really goes into the shitter.

I think as has been said before, individual views don't change as much as societal views. Take someone like DieHard - married a Japanese lady, whereas 150 years ago, conservatives of the day were all about keeping marriage within races. Yet here he is today, conservative as they come.

There may be some truth to suggesting woody will be a conservative in 20 years time, but I don't think it's because he will have 'seen the light' but rather because of that shifting of social views.

In terms of the Hillary voters, there's a clear split in the party between the younger, new-to-politics voters who constitute the future of the party, and the older, 'we have all of our social rights now, pretty much, and I'm actually doing alright economically, so let's just keep it where we are' voters. Those are the people that will morph in to conservatives. And maybe, in 30+ years, when the bernie supporters of today have their free education, equal rights for people across the gender and sexuality spectrum, big money lobbying outlawed, and all the other things, they too will become conservatives, and a new wave of democrats will come in, with whatever the new idea of the day is - maybe AI is so advanced it's able to feel love and people want to marry robots, who knows.

Well there's a great deal of Truth to that. When I was a kid I was pretty damn liberal. Really anti-war, mostly because I might have gotten drafted and had to go fight in one.

I've never had a problem with homosexuals and back in those days I thought black people had a point about discrimination.

My Views have changed slightly only in the regard that I wish so many gay people didn't enjoy shocking and offending the straight world as much as they do. I understand how much fun it is but don't think it furthers anybody's agenda. Black people? I think that in these days affirmative action and laws making it almost impossible to fire one, I think it's time to join the human race. That means not using slavery and Jim Crow as an excuse for every possible ill of your community.

It's a little bit like your buddy who's crying about being broke so you give him some money and he goes out and buys beer and cigarettes.

As far as Bernie's socialism, sure, we're moving that way politicians have to find new perks to give people and the old perks can't ever be taken away.

My jaded view free public education is fine but how few people take advantage of 1 through 12 and how many will actually take advantage of 13 through 16? Is it human nature to undervalue something you get for free?

As to what he changing his mind? I would guess that in 30 years gay marriage and civil rights, which are already the law of the land, won't be his go-to issues.

But I wouldn't expect the future version of Bernie Sanders will be able to get money out of politics. Anyone that believes that is kidding himself.

Politicians have been bitching about that forever, especially the ones with less money. ;)
