When you read the original story, it turns out that there is a discrepancy of between one and five votes between the poll book and ballot box, but it seems to go both ways - as in, there could be more or fewer votes than 'should' be, by a couple. “It’s not good,” conceded Daniel Baxter, elections director for the city of Detroit. He blamed the discrepancies on the city’s decade-old voting machines, saying 87 optical scanners broke on Election Day. Many jammed when voters fed ballots into scanners, which can result in erroneous vote counts if ballots are inserted multiple times. Poll workers are supposed to adjust counters to reflect a single vote but in many cases failed to do so, causing the discrepancies, Baxter said. You won't find any complaints from me about investing in updating voting technologies or reverting to simply counting names on pieces of paper, whatever works to make sure the vote is right.
