THE BROWNS BOARD

Ongoing "Internet Rumor" - Parcells to Cleveland

OK - from what it says on PFT there's no real credible source behind this, but it's still nice to think that maybe there's a slim chance that Lerner could break the bank and implore Parcells to engage in one last Franchise Building project that would secure his name as the greatest salvation for woebegone organizations

Parcells has an open contract with the Dolphins that allows him to take all his money and retire or leave for a new team whenever he wants... it's really just a question of whether he wants to leave his latest success story in sunny Florida and whether he's got enough in him to turn around Cleveland

But I'm convinced that Parcells is exactly what Cleveland needs... I have to think he'd quickly bring in a new head coach as even though he and Mangini share some roots on the football family tree, Parcells can't be looking at how Mangini has handled himself and the situation in Cleveland this year and be the least bit impressed

But whatever Parcells' choice would be, who could really second guess it?

His track record speaks for itself... although he sure didn't win championships in all his stops, he sure left all of his organizations in pretty solid shape when he left, turning around some pretty sorry franchises in the process

Cleveland may be too big a job for him at this stage in his life unfortunately, but for the sake of one of the most historic organizations in the NFL, let's hope he at least considers it.

The reason Parcells would consider coming here is because he enjoys rebuilding franchises. He has been quoted on numerous occasions saying that is his new football passion, and....lets be real- Cleveland is about the ultimate rebuilding project anyone could dream of...

The team doesn't need a guy who will be around for 2-3 years. It needs to build an organization that'll last.

Parcells and stability don't go together. The guy is the Larry Brown of the NFL.

You won't find too many teams lamenting his tenure with them... pretty much across the board he helped organizations regain or retain a solid foundation... and in some cases he did that with some pretty sorry teams.

Even if he only stayed for 2 years he'd attract the instant credibility this team needs to attract quality players. Right now it has none.

Exactly. You walk until you can run. Folks that want a knockout FO thats gonna turn this team into a contender that will be hear for 10 years? not gonna happen. We need to turn the ship in the right direction in a few years then full steam ahead. Id much rather have the sure fire 2-3 years to respectability over the hit or miss decade guy. Lower your expectations and be realistic instead of living in Madden World!

Good point, I agree.

The Browns need someone willing to stick around a decade or more.

I agree, but who says part of the building process wouldn't include a right hand man who would take over when Bill decided to move on to greener pastures??

Building the franchise doesn't have to mean only on the field.

Bill takes the Czar position, hires a GM who he trusts and trains as the two of them look to bring in talent.

Let me ask you all this -- are the 'fins fixed?

Sure, they had a great year last year, but they look to be a sub-.500 team this year.

They lost ugly to the Bills yesterday and are outside realistic playoff hopes.

Teams have a one year bounce. You go from Cleo Lemon as your starting QB to Pennington delivering a story-book year, it's not hard to believe that you'll be better. And you start with a franchise who has both Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams. The question is has Parcells built something in Miami that can be sustained. Joey Porter, Jason Taylor?

I'm not convinced that he has. You could have declared the browns turned around in 2002 or 2007 and been wrong.

We just picked up Roth who was a high second round pick, had a very productive season last year, but wasn't a "Parcell's guy." I'll be following that one for the rest of the season.

I'm not saying that I don't want Parcells. What I'm saying is that if you are talking about a two year stay, I wouldn't be thrilled with Parcells leaving the Browns in the state he'd be leaving the 'fins and patting himself on the back.

Here is one thing I will say. If it's an uncapped year next year, you have to have a guy who knows how to work the cap. That statement seems a contradiction, but the salary cap WILL return in 2011 or the players will be locked out. So what you can do next year is dump contracts without putting the team over the cap. What you can't do is sign players to enormous multiple-year deals . . . because you'll put yourself in a hole for 2011.

One overlooked thing is that in 2002-2003 Butch Davis made huge sacrifices to right the cap. Savage was the beneficiary and he left a team in worse shape than he found it when you look at the roster. And left Mangini in a cap-strapped situations with only 4 draft picks.

A part of me kind of sees Parcells as the guy who sold Springfield the Monorail:

Parcells job will probably be to setup and reorganize the Browns structure so it can function as a solid front office organization that succeeds on it's own when he leaves, That rebuilding the organization, The quality of the team will lag behind because, it takes longer to rebuild the actual team.

Are there really fans in Cleveland who would be lamenting a two year run in which they were the AFC Central Champions, followed by an 8-8 season?

After THIS debacle of a season? After this debacle of a DECADE? When was the last time the Browns won the Division - or even were a contender?

I'd have thought most Browns fans would be pretty pumped to win the Division and be restored to credibility.

No doubt, winning the Fins winning the AFC East on a tie breaker wasn't hurt by the fact that they were coming off a 1-15 season with the benefit of that easier schedule... nor has their .500 season been helped by the strength of schedule faced by a Division champion.

The truth of the caliber of the team currently is likely in between 11-5 and a potential 8-8 season.

So would it really be sooo bad to have the Browns quickly re-established as a 9-7/10-6 team?

I wouldn't go too far on comparing Parcells as a coach (not that he'd be coaching here) and Mangini - there's a big difference... Mangini seems to have a one size fits all mentality on how he acts as a coach. Belichick I think had the same fault initially. Parcells, at least by the time he came to the Patriots, knew that different players responded to different types of prodding. He handled Bledsoe gently but called Terry Glenn "she" to get him going.

Sure he fell just short of a Super Bowl ring and left amid discord with the owner, but all in all he restored a joke of a franchise to respectability and without the foundation Parcells left there'd be no Lombardi trophies in Foxboro.

2 questions: Is that The Pet Shop Boys, and isn't the one chick the girl that was in The Sopranos? What do you think Tony Soprano would do to that guy?

No it's supposed to spoof (sort of) them. It's Adam Sanberg. Dudes funny. Not sure about the girl. Just commenting that I would jiz in my pants if Parcells came here (lol).

Sandberg's funniest video BY FAR.

I posted this along time ago. The girl is the one who plays Meadow (Tony's daughter) in the Soprano's.

Just a correction. . . it's Andy Samberg, a star & writer from SNL. The guy 'rapping' with him is a member of his band, Lonely Island. This song is one of many funny 'spoof' or comedy songs from their album "Incredibad."

Also to note, in that video, the guy in the back of the grocery store mopping the floor is Justin Timberlake.

And, in the second video someone posted "Dick In A Box" that is also Justin Timberlake singing with Andy Samberg.

Google or Youtube Andy Samberg, or Lonely Island (or on Hulu.com). There are several more good videos out there.

Really? I am glad we have you here to pull us through these tough times. I would of never known without you. I envy your hipness and wealth of knowledge. Thank you.

p.s. Have you ever noticed the N and M are right next to each other on the keyboard?

Can't handle some one correcting your mistakes, can you? So who is Adam Sanberg? Did Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg have a love-child?

No, I really don't care, in fact, I implore you. Correct me about the one missed keystroke and move on, we don't have to hear your pseudo-intellectual babble about the people on SNL, we all know.

What does bill parcells have to do with adam sandler?

Honestly i think we have a better chance of getting sandler as a czar then of getting parcellls...with sandler at least the sidelines and stadium would be fun again with adam upstairs making faces and body motions into the glass...;)

The truth of the caliber of the [Miami] team currently is likely in between 11-5 and a potential 8-8 season.

Maybe in a perfect, injury-free world with all the right breaks they are a 9-7 team. The 'fins could finish 5-11 this season. 6-10 is likely.

Obviously, I'd take 11-5 and a division win. But I'd rather take a 5-11, 8-8 ramp up that's followed by a long run of 10+ win years.

I look through Miami's roster and I don't see the foundation for any kind of sustained run. Second round draft picks spent on Pat White don't inspire a lot of confidence, either.

There's still lots of work left to be done in Miami. I like Sporano and a lot of the things that have been done in Miami, but to act like that franchise is on par with the Colts, Patriots and Steelers, or is likely to reach that level takes a great deal of imagination in my opinion.

He would be a great guy to see bernie kosar learn from and take control of the team after bill gets it up and running. To me I love this idea. I also saw this listed on Sunday Night Football too!

I wouldn't mind Bernie as a GM...had he stayed in the game and worked in a front office as Ozzie did...Ozzie wasn't a GM for what?? Maybe 10-12 years after filling various roles in a NFL front office.

The GM position is a bit more than a PR move, and Bernie as a GM would be a PR move.

He isn't going to be a qualified GM after working a few years.

Just forget that idea. It takes more then being a fan favorite and showing up in the draft room once a year.
