This is the fundamental problem with DC that no one wants to look in the eye because the entire military industrial complex will be called into question. By the time this thing would be fully vetted and fit for duty even the Chinese might have their own home grown fighter that would keester the F-35. Likely about money in the end. In Russia I think they just say make this fucker go as fast as possible, as high as possible....and turn like it's on rails. Then we'll add shit to it piece by piece so that one thing doesn't shit can the entire design. I think they're asking the Lockheed engineers to do too much too soon. Materials research is probably not at the level necessary for some of the things these guys are thinking up. What's concerning is that think tanks assessment that basic fundamental principles of avionic engineering have been fudged. I understand if you have weapons that can shoot without the plane actually looking at the target, that you don't need the thing to turn like a bat....but then you make it a high energy fighter that can power out of a turning match with a more nimble opponent...get altitude/distance...come back for another go. But they didn't even give this thing that. The Russian planes will out turn this thing and also outburn it. Yes it absolutely matters that the F-35 can't turn with an aircraft from the 1980's that was loaded down with fuel tanks and missiles. YEah you heard that right. But it could hang with the smaller Migs cause if it got in a bad situation the pilot put it vertical and powered out of the engagement...got altitude, nosed it over and could come down for another shot. That was an awesome plane. If you're not high angle of attack plane, like an F-16 that can turn on a dime...than you'd better have the juice. Russian 5th gen planes are pretty much going to do both "VERY" well. Seeing that link that chris posted that shows how far behind even the Eurofighter that piggy is, I'm like why did we spend 1T on this shitbox? "NOW" they're trying to reinvent the thing as "oh it's not a dogfighter it goes in there on day one to take out the SAM sites". That was "not" it's original intent. You clowns know that the F-22 program was cut off because they said why continue making this thing, which was certainly better than the 35 but still lagging behind the rooskies, when we'll just make shit tons of these new 35's that we'll spread out to all the services. And because money, not reason and logic, dominate our society...nobody could snip this thing off years ago and say this thing is too expensive and it's an embarassement. Don't just call yourself "conservative", actually be conservative. Did I just blow your minds? Does the thought of having congruent thoughts and ideas across the spectrum terrify some of you? The assertion that the 22 is the dogfighter, while logical, doesn't explain why they drastically cut down the purchase numbers for that plane too. The 35 was billed as the F-22+. The whole reason they gave for stopping short on the 22 was that the 35 was as or even more capable and could be used by all service's..whereas the 22 is only air force.
