Well, that's a positive, but I'm not holding my breath. If he's been 100% clean- pretty sure Goodell will reinstate him. A return of Gordon would be huge for the WR position. August 1st is 11 days away.

One way or the other this should resolve it. And I have a good feeling...

Josh presents himself well... a plus... but in the end evidence of his "rehabilitation" will determine the outcome.

At least it will if he wears fresh clothes unlike his reported Mexico trip with whazisname...

Lots of noise about nothin'. While other NFL players his age have been getting better through coaching and experience, he's been regressing from doing nothing. His Frankie Goes to Hollywood-like one season wonder is a long way back in the rear view mirror.......... Can't wait until he is no longer associated with the team.

Goodell will fuck us over again and bring him back in the middle of the season to accrue contract time and ruin the chemistry built between RG3 and the rookies.

All because this talented football star drinks beer AND smokes pot.

This is stupid. As is the Brady suspension. Fuck Goodell, the NFL can print money with anyone at the helm ... Why this prick?

Two games for beating your wife ....

Four for maybe knowing about deflated footballs ...

Several seasons because a talented kid in his 20s smokes pot and drinks beer and is not bright enough to get around the system.

He's a fucking football player. He's not beating anybody, stealing from anybody, cheating or harming society.

He's a dumb pothead. Why can't dumb potheads be football players? Seems like an ideal position for them.

I agree but it's the rules nothing we can do but hope for the ones who obey the laws. I know it sounds obvious but hey man that's a lot of money at stake put the roach out and do whatever you got to do to make that money.

Understood.

But he's not the only working stiff who's job won't let him smoke pot.

And he only has to quit for 10 years or so.

He's proven that he's too stupid, over and over again...so it's bound to happen sooner or later.

I don't think "dumb" is quite the correct term, but he's extremely immature. People that know him say often how intelligent and artistic Gordon is, as well as sensitive and soft-spoken. The other side of the coin is, "If he's so smart, then how can he NOT do the right thing and stay on the football team?" That question is a bit more complicated to answer, and it could have a lot to do with psychological issues such as childhood trauma, upbringing, addiction, and whatever else. Quite simply, we don't know what's going on with this man.

Roger Goodell would not have met with Gordon unless he has accomplished at least SOME of what was asked of him. Gordon has been absent of the public spotlight for quite some time now, but what he's been doing is anybody's guess. Due to his prior social media posts, it's obvious that Gordon remains a physical specimen. We all know that "football shape" is different from being "in shape", but I would put money on Gordon being in elite physical condition, and ready to get going on the field IF that day comes.

The second part of this massive equation is whether or not the Browns will even want him back. On one hand, it sounds pretty crazy to let the guy walk if the NFL tells him he's back in the league. That would mean Gordon could sign with any team that wants him, and I have a feeling the Ravens would be all over him like a bum on a bologna sandwich. Then Gordon would be kicking our ass every year (twice) and I don't like the sound of THAT. Our team is light (to put it mildly) on established playmakers, so keeping Gordon makes a lot of sense. Would he be a distraction? Eh, possibly at first, but that could all go away IF GORDON HAS CHANGED. I know many individuals who believe people are not capable of change. I happen to know that a person CAN change if they truly want to.

The world is full of of unfulfilled potential, and that is sad. I would like very much to see Gordon turn it around and do it with our team. Not only would he be fun to watch, he could possibly assist RG III in becoming the longterm QB we so desperately need.

Josh Gordon and Frankie Goes to Hollywood is not an association I would have ever thought of.

There is a lot of societal stupidity over drugs. If this country had any intellect, they would handle this properly....like they try to do with booze. But, apparently, by certain indices that corners of this country are going fully away from any sort of intellectual approach to problems.

Yes, by "dumb" I meant young, immature, mistake-prone, all of that, I'm not questioning the kid's intelligence.

He can't stop tripping over himself because he's young and "dumb" and the rules are stringent and misapplied.

I don't care if the guy that makes my tacos smokes pot and drinks beer.

I don't care if my wide receiver smokes pot and drinks beer.

I don't care if my business colleagues smoke pot and drink beer.

The guy that flies the plane or drives the bus? Ya, let's make sure he is sober on work days.

LOL! Well put.

FWIW, I've never minded anyone who smoked pot. That said, I don't want my favorite NFL team counting on somebody who's biggest priority is marijuana.

Back in the day, they used to refer to somebody that just got done smoking weed as wasted.

That's exactly what we've done with #1 WR spot reserved for Mr Wonderful all this time - WASTED it. I'm ecstatic this front office and coaching staff will not be held hostage to Josh MIGHT finally be interested in putting football first.

Look at some of the WRs our Front Office has brought here to play WR:

Davone Bess, went from good hands with shake and bake to just baked in Cleveland...

Dwayne Bowe. Looks like Snoop Dogg, Made $ like Snoop Dogg, Smokes like Snoop Dogg, Good thing neither guy had to start for an NFL team in 2015.

If you're wasted, you might not know the plays.

If you're wasted, you might not care if you didn't know the plays.

If you're wasted, you might want to take the next play off because of how good you used to be.

If you're wasted, you might not have the energy or motivation to make the difference Cleveland needs you to be.

If you're wasted, you might not care that didn't score a single TD in your last 5 starts in 2014.

If you're wasted, you might not care that you could fail another drug test right around the corner.

If you're wasted, you might not understand Johnny Manziel isn't your friend - he's your co-dependent keeping your football parked like his.

If you're wasted, you might go 20-25 miles over the speed limit with a bag of weed in your car as long as your buddy tells the cops it's his.

If you're wasted, you might not understand how many chances you've received.

If you're wasted, you might not think you need to GET IT today when there's always tomorrow. That all started at Baylor how many moons ago?

No matter how many times you watch the same story - the conclusion doesn't change. History is trying to tell the right intellect running our Front Office this and they just added 3 WRs in the draft plus a TE that may see some reps at WR.

Conversely...

....there is probably not a company around that would suspend you for cough medicine.....which is why he was suspended the first time...(lets log this one to stupid, because Im sure he's not a cough medicine addict...just too dumb to know the rules....

....and there aren't many(if any) that will suspend you for 16nl of pot(state standard is 50)...which is what the NFL did....

....and there aren't any companies that will suspend you for having a drink with your coaches and co-workers.....which is what the NFL did.....(and I dont think he's addicted to alcohol either, just another stupid lack of knowledge)....

So....scream he's a pot head, but realize the NFL standards are WAY beyond any that an average employee has to deal with and that 2 outta his 3 suspensions were not for pot, but for cough medicine and a drink....

Mud,

The real point is that Gordon PUT himself under the microscope where he HAD to be lilly white & is too damned stupid to comply. Look at it this way...If YOU were under a microscope & every behavior looked at closely, would you, or ANYONE with a lick of sense, hang out with Manziel?

Please don't cook up that "poor innocent Josh" shit & expect me to swallow it. He's a loser until & unless he proves otherwise.

Not really defending, except to say he's more stupid than an addict.....and people keep saying he's all about weed weed weed.....and my point is that they suspended for things other than weed, that everyone else uses on a daily basis.....

again....I get that he shouldnt touch anything and he;s handled it poorly(it's all on him) but it's hard to argue against the fact that he's also been suspended the longest for some of the most petty shit in NFL history.....

know any other players that were banished for a drink and some cough medicine....any????....one???

Here's a dated but interesting take from Jim Kanicki:

The Josh Gordon file.

RG3 and Art Briles made 5’10” and 4.6 slow Kendell Wright the 20th overall pick in 2012. Imagine how high 6’4″ and 4.5 Josh Gordon would have gone. I didn’t want to get busy with Josh Gordon’s problems. We’ve all been young, we’ve all made stupid choices over the course of our lives. I don’t buy into ‘three-strikes’ type jurisprudence and don’t apply it here.

But damn. This is deeper than the three failed drug tests at two colleges that we knew about and the insulting “narcotics prescription for strep throat” “confession.” This is mid-stage self-destruction and someone in his posse should be planning an intervention.

Lamar High School star. Can you even imagine having an NFL WR’s body in high school? Josh Gordon was a pretty big deal in high school in Houston. Physical gifts like this get you on college recruiting maps and Gordon had that. This same report lists:Florida, Michigan, Florida State, USC, OSU, Texas Tech, Houston and Texas A&M as interested. Gordon himself says, “Florida and Michigan are my two favorites. My family is from Michigan and we like to sit and watch their games. Florida, they produce so many athletes and I like how they play.”

Gordon led the Lamar HS Redskins to an 8-2 record and the second round of Regional III DI playoffs as senior in 2008, including a 4-1 record in District 20-5A. He was named first-team All-District 20-5A after totaling 25 receptions for 531 yards (21.2 average) and nine touchdowns as a senior. At six-foot-four, 210 pounds, Josh Gordon is an imposing target. He is also one of the top players for Houston Lamar’s football team helping to lead them to yet another playoff run. (2/3/2008) That’s an impressive list. But flash forward to December 2008 and we see “Texas Tech and Missouri, his favorites during the season, seem to have lost interest.” Not usually in the business of snubbing 6’4″ pro-caliber Texas high school stars.Move to late January and Michigan never made him an offer. He picked Baylor over TAMU (in spite of never visiting Kyle Field). Could be nothing but.. damn.. you’re a fast, graceful, 6’4″ pro-calibre high school WR. First team all-Texas, 20+ yds/catch, nine TDs. How do you turn off so many programs?

South Beach Strep Throat So the high school recruiting period was strange. The suspension at Baylor happened, the transfer to Utah happened as well as another failed drug test. But you can’t teach AJ Green clone and the Browns drafted Gordon with a high second round pick. How has Gordon been working out for Browns? Well he just got suspended for two games for failing a drug test. Gordon also was fined two additional game checks.

About that suspension. We’ve got some issues with the explanation offered by Gordon. Here’s what he says:

In February, I was diagnosed with strep throat for which a doctor prescribed antibiotics and cough medicine,” Gordon said. “Apparently, the medicine I took contained codeine, which is prohibited by the NFL policy. The policy terms are strict about unintentional ingestion, but the NFL has not imposed the maximum punishment in light of the facts of my case. Therefore, I have chosen to be immediately accountable for the situation. I sincerely apologize for the impact on my team, coaches, and Browns fans. I look forward to working hard in training camp and pre-season, and contributing immediately when I return in week three.

We call bullshit. No really, it’s a problem. As we called out in a reply to Kolonich’s piece on Gordon yesterday, here’s our off-the-cuff responses to Gordon’s statement:

1. Who doesn't know a cough syrup does or does not have codeine in it?
2. What pro athlete doesn’t know the drug rules?
3. What pro athlete with three failed drug tests doesn't know the drug rules?
4. Who goes to a got-damn doc for strep throat?
5. If you've got strep throat what are you doing in south beach with your crew?
6. Who even gets strep throat? When’s the last time you had strep throat?
7. Does strep make you cough? I thought it was swollen glands.
8. Not sure where this fits but: his hometown is the birthplace of drank.

screen-shot-2013-06-11-at-1-08-40-pm.jpg

PROTIP: Read your prescription med labels before ingesting. We’re not doctors here. But we can google ‘symptoms of strep throat’ and ‘prescriptions for strep throat.’

Common symptoms of strep throat in children and adults include:

Antibiotics are the treatment of choice for a confirmed strep throat infection:

  • Antibiotics will reduce the time you are contagious. You are usually not contagious 24 hours after starting antibiotics.
  • Antibiotic treatment for strep throat can also help prevent some of the rarecomplications related either to the strep infection itself or to the body’s immune response to the infection. Complications of strep throat are rare but can occur, especially if strep throat is not properly treated.
  • Antibiotics may shorten the time you are sick by about one day.

Yeah. Strep is a sore throat/swollen glands problem treated with anti-biotics. Strep is not coughing treated with controlled narcotic cough syrup. 22 year old millionaire at Spring Break in Miami Beach. What’s the worst that could happen? So this is a problem. But it gets even worse when you find this sourced quote from Grossi on Gordon:

“I thought he really had a made a change and figured it out,” said a source. “Josh spent a bunch of time in South Beach (Fla.) during spring break. He’s very easily influenced. I think he’s a kid that really wants to change. But at some point, you have to be responsible for your own actions.”

If you’re feeling generous toward Josh you could question Grossi’s unnamed source. But you can’t question the code contained within the quote. Spring Break, South Beach, easily influenced.

It’s his money, his career. Maybe Josh didn’t hear about the $1.3M Joe Haden lost last year?

This is true. Gordon is free to do with his career as he wants. We’re not his mom or his agent and not in a place to advise him. So without judgement we’re just going to catalogue the bad choices Josh has made so far and then question whether he has, in fact, learned.

  • Seeming alienation of top college football programs during recruiting.
    • Results in no offers from his original top choices.
  • Two failed drug tests and suspension at Baylor.
    • Results in transfer away from the legendarily WR-friendly Griffin/Briles offense; Kendall Wright goes first round.
  • Failed drug test at Utah.
    • Results in forced entry into supplementary draft and risk of being paid as third rounder or worse.
  • Codeine use in the same time frame as spring break in South Beach.
    • Loses $148,894 in pay.

Pretty costly stuff when taken in sum. It’s not a good trend but we’re all forgiving and as Browns fans, optimistic. Maybe he’s learning from this. But in case you thought my comment about an intervention seemed over done, consider…

The Bedard tweets. We talked about Greg Bedard’s tweets from Berea last week in Friday’s Little piece. We were going to let the Gordon tweets slide, but can’t. The impartial Bedard’s observations taken with his breadth of frame-of-reference adds up to a pretty scathing review.

screen-shot-2013-06-11-at-10-19-39-am.jpscreen-shot-2013-06-11-at-10-19-51-am.jpscreen-shot-2013-06-11-at-10-20-04-am.jpscreen-shot-2013-06-11-at-10-21-22-am.jp

UPDATE: Bedard stands by his Gordon assessment in interview with Bull and Fox 6/13.

This is bad. This is the anti-Greg Little, the anti-Tristan Thompson. Have any of you played for a high school coach who would be ok with you walking after a dropped ball in practice? Me neither. When national football watchers are “shocked” that you “loaf a lot” it’s time to take inventory. Gordon looks like AJ Green when he steps on the field. Green, like Greg Little, had a team suspension in college. We’d feel a lot better about Gordon’s suspension(s) if they fell in the category of ‘enterprising college athlete’ and not ‘recidivist slave to drugs to the point of jeopardizing millions of dollars.’ As ever we hope for the best. But Gordon really needs to get his shit together.

My high school football coach used to constantly remind us: "if you love this game - you pay the price and sacrifice."

Any examples of what Josh Gordon has sacrificed for his love of football?

Here's a cut and paste from the article in my previous post: Have any of you played for a high school coach who would be ok with you walking after a dropped ball in practice? Me neither. When national football watchers are “shocked” that you “loaf a lot” it’s time to take inventory.

I know how popular the "he's just stupid" angle is. I just don't agree that's his #1 show stopper. I don't see a guy that loves football enough to suit up. The last 4 times he did suit up - there wasn't much passion coming out of him.

Here's a timeline from Wikipedia of his NFL troubles after his college football career abruptly hit strike 3 for those refusing to understand why he kicked off his NFL career on strike 2 with the 1 team willing to take a chance on him:

On June 7, 2013, the NFL announced that Gordon would be suspended for the first two games of the 2013 season due to violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy.

On July 5, 2014, Gordon was arrested for driving while impaired in Raleigh, North Carolina.

On August 27, 2014, Gordon acknowledged that the NFL suspended him for one year for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. On September 19, 2014, his suspension was reduced to 10 games amidst the new NFL drug policy. Gordon was officially reinstated on November 17. He only played 5 games and caught 24 passes for 303 yards.

On December 27, 2014, exactly one year removed from being selected into the Pro Bowl, the Browns suspended Gordon from the final game of the 2014 season due to a violation of team rules. My edit, the team that was 6-4 before he returned - lost 4 of the 5 games he played in.

As of January 2015, Gordon faced another year-long suspension due to testing positive for alcohol use. Gordon entered the NFL's substance abuse program after pleading guilty to a driving while impaired charge in September 2014 and was prohibited from consuming alcohol during his time in the program. Gordon was officially suspended for one year on February 3, 2015 and won't be able to return until the start of the 2016 season.

On January 20, 2016, Gordon applied to the league for reinstatement. His request was denied in March when it was reported that he'd failed another drug test.

At least they left out the episode where he got pulled over for speeding with a big bag of weed in his car that just so conveniently belonged to his buddy...

Actions always speak louder than empty promises. It's not that tough to pass a drug test folks. Good Lord!
