Cavs Draft Talk: Sergey Karasev At #13?

Seems to be getting to be common knowledge that the Cavs love smooth shooting Russian Karasev for their small forward tandem (with Gee). He's thought to be NBA ready and returned home with some kind of assurance he would be picked in round one. Mavs want to move the 13th pick for some reason (cap space?) and would take the 19th and one or both high 2nds, plus probably an expiring contract with an eye to 2014.

The Cavs don't have an desire to add four rookies to their incredibly young roster. Smart money's on a big at #1, Karasev, and one good veteran wing player in free agency.

Team is still gonna be crazy young but the talent is certainly accumulating.

Lots of buzz that the Cavs will trade the #19 for Thomas Robinson... which would be an amazing move. He was a top five pick who played balls out at Kansas, looks good whenever you leave him on the floor long enough. He's a 6'10" athlete, which probably puts a smile on the faces of both Otto Porter and Ben McLemore. Rock Chalk!

Adding McLemore and Robinson (who's not even 22 yet) would sure as hell make them more athletic. The Mavs are still desperate to dump their 13 and Marion, probably would do it for a six pack (or, say, two second round picks?).

McLemore, Robinson, and Karasev would be GM of the Year stuff.

4/5: Varajeo, Thompson, Robinson, Zeller. Amazing.

1/2: Irving, McLemore, Waiters, Ellington, 33rd pick (PG)

3: Karasev, Gee, Miles (swing)

Love that team. Let'em run.

Current plan seems to be: Draft Len at #1, trade #19 for Thomas Robinson, trade two seconds and take on Marion's contract in return for #13 pick... and take Karasev.

So the Cavs get Len, Robinson, and Karasev. That would certainly be making the best of a bad draft. Wondering what it leaves for free agency. Have to think interest in Earl Clark gets replaced with interest in a backup point guard.

Roster would be:

Irving

Waiters

Varajeo

Thompson

Karasev

Robinson

Len

Zeller

Gee

Miles

Ellington

(Backup PG)

Man, you'd have a 10-man rotation easy. Andy is a definite in-season trade.

One thing to know before we start screaming, "Alex Len?!": Oklahoma City is trying desperately to get into the top five and Len is their target. If he should somehow fall to #4, he'll go there for sure.

Point being, the top 5-7 are a matter of taste and Len is solidly in that group. While a lot of NBA types don't believe a "true center" has much value anymore, our coach is DEFINITELY not one of those guys. He likes a rim protector.

Got him at #19.

I like the Davis pick too.

Cavs going places ...

Bennett pick was genius. He and McLemore are only guys you could see in an all-star game anytime soon... and McLemore had a lot of whispers about his mentality. Bennett has a short-ish PF body but he's fast, athletic, and can score inside and out. He's a lot like a Larry Johnson or even Chuck Barkley, if I may.

Question is fit: Can Bennett and Thompson play together? Can Bennett be a three? Do you move Thompson for Thomas Robinson and a first round pick next year? Pretty sure we have a major signing in free agency coming, perhaps a 3. If we get Earl Clark, I really think we'll move Thompson.

Who plays center for the two-time champs again? Oh, yeah. Welcome to 2013. Dwight Howard is the best "pure center" and can't seem to win anywhere. Marc Gasol is good but you could find four of him in most drafts. Bynum's a mess.

Spurs "center" is Splitter who's about to be passed by a beefed-up Zeller in value. The league just doesn't revolve around that anymore.

Interesting: Otto Porter's ding was that he isn't very athletic. Now he's talking about how damn fast the league plays. I can see how the Cavs got down to the two guys who feel like they have upper tier NBA talent (McLemore, Bennett) even though they had recently drafted players at both positions.

Difference? Bennett can play the 3. Nobody thinks McLemore can play the 1.

Just sayin'... watch this kid:

"Sergey Karasev was taken 19th overall in the NBA Draft last month by the Cleveland Cavaliers, to the delight of slavophiles everywhere. It became clear almost immediately that Karasev was planning on coming over to the NBA right away, despite his young age of 19. With 1st overall choice Anthony Bennett injured, many were counting on Karasev to be a young prospect to keep an eye on at Las Vegas Summer League. That dream was squashed, though, when it became clear that Karasev was planning on playing at the World University Games with other young Russians. Taking place in Kazan, Russia, it makes sense that Karasev would want to play in a tournament that his country was hosting. So far, Karasev hasn't just been playing; he has been dominating.

In today's semifinal game against Canada, Karasev scored 20 points, recorded 10 rebounds, and passed out 7 assists in a 10 point victory. It is just a game, but I have been a little worried about Karasev's rebounding, so 10 against a pretty good Canadian team is pretty solid. His 20 points came on 12 shots, and he converted 6/7 free throws. This is excellent offensive efficiency."

Didn't that Canada team whip up on the US?

I think this kid may be the steal of the draft. The European players at the 2 & 3 positions tend to be very solid fundamentally in their overall play & technique. Of all our draft picks, he is the one player I really wanted in this draft, but I never thought he would be there at 19. We'll see what happens in the NBA.

If he can only be a sharpshooter from the outside that would fulfill a big need. Anything else may be a bonus.

Just watched a highlight reel... wow. Dude could be a star. He blows to the hole, can get up... but more than anything, he's a natural born shooter. Oh, and he's a terrific passer.

Can't believe he's 19. It's like a Spurs pick. He may come off the bench this year but the Cavs are gonna want him on the court more and more over time. Kyrie, Waiters (tearing up Summer), Bennett, and Karasev on the court at the same time feels like a lot of scoring and fun. Although maybe not much D!

Damn, if Bynum is as well as he claims to be... I can't put a limit on this team.

Except with Mike Brown as the Coach of this team, defense will be insisted upon.

He's said to be "smooth and athletic" in addition to the stroke. Good handle. I think he scored 27 in another game in that tournament. Those swing guys who can play the 2 or the 3 and give you 30 minutes? Gold.

Sounds like the Ginobli mold. Is he similar size?
