HBO's Scientology Documentary: Going Clear

Anyone else watch this? I think it was pretty interesting. It is crazy what people will believe

(OBF stop reading here)

I can only think many early religions, those that are accepted now today, started off very similar to this one. We just consider Scientology crazy because it is newer and we're more intelligent as a people than we were thousands of years ago. If someone came up with these ideas 2,000 years ago, and had a very smart conman at the lead, would we be a "Scientologist-Country" now?

My outlook is simple..

I believe in a higher power. A supreme being (God) so to speak.

I believe it's not my place to tell you who, or what to believe in...

But I will say this..... if you don't believe in a higher power other than yourself. I will suggest to you that you have yet to arrive at a point in life where that simple truth is made painfully aware to you..

But you will...

We all do..

As crazy as that may seem.................

Well duh, if L.Ron Hubbard lived 2000 years ago then he would have been the conman in the lead, and Scientology would have come and gone like many other pagan religions before and after Christianity came on the scene.

Christianity didn't need a conman.

That was an incredibly stupid hypothesis Woody...you're obsessed with anti-religion and trying too way too hard.

I watched it. Its about a crazy guy who made up the whole thing to make money. How you can equate this to other religions is beyond me.

i'd been told by someone who swore he was among them a while back that they are not what they seem. All the xenu shit is a front so that people don't take the organization seriously, mission accomplished if that's true. They basically made themselves into clowns to avoid clashing with the major religions who obviously wield great power with many of the worlds superpowers. Who knows. When you read some of L's shit it's hard to imagine anyone taking that seriously, I remember something about humanoid alligators riding flying motorcycles or some absolutely off the wall shit like that. Just batshit insane. And the xenu story about how we all came here on DC-10's and got dropped off in volcano's.....it really does seem like someone went way way way out of their way to make sure people thought this was a stupid bat shit crazy little group that would be zero threat to anything.

Well, the first idea you probably need to entertain young man is the fact that maybe,,,, just maybe,, you don't know everything..

Having watched and read your responses to a myriad of different subject matters here, I find that outlook to be a virtual impossibility for you to entertain.

I was you,,, probably 40 yrs ago.. I am embarrassed to say that.. I'm certain if you live this long, you will be too...

I never said I know everything. I commented on your response that at some point I'll "find a higher power" or whatever. I look forward to learning new ideas and subjects. But simply saying "I'm older than you, you're wrong" doesn't quite do it for me. Congrats on believing in a higher power. I see nothing right now that will completely shatter what I believe.

I'm sorry you were embarrassed by your younger self. I'm quite happy with myself right now though.

Maybe it shouldn't be you place to claim you're right based only on your age? Maybe your life experiences and beliefs can't be used to define everyone else? If you disagree with me on topics, maybe attempt to counter the points being made, not just write me off for being younger.

Lol.. of course you are woody, and so was Axe with himself. Miss the point much?

Will I grow up and become "wiser"? Sure. Will I have wished I did some things differently? Probably.

Not sure how that validates any kind of "I'm older than you, you're wrong" mentality.

If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. Present factual evidence to show me that. Don't just way "So young. Thinks he knows everything. Back in my day...." and then act like that proves anything.

I just think for most of us as we look back on the things we took so seriously when we were in our early twenties it really is an epiphany. of course back then we were dead certain that we were the smartest most perceptive most understanding most tolerant most forward thinking human beings that ever walked the planet.

I know you understand that and will come to understand it better as years go by.

But we do know more. We used to say that also, back at ya.

Then type up a post that includes facts, reason, data, etc to prove a point.

Don't rely on "I'm older so there".

Is that really too much to ask?

I don't think I'm any of those things. The smartest person I know is currently at Harvard Law anyway.

All I'm saying, is that if I'm so obviously incorrect and naive, it should be easy to prove outside of "You're young and don't get it".

Try me. I'm an engineer. I'm good with facts and data and shit.

A couple things.

I wish I had a dollar for every time some snarky hot shot engineer with a helluva lot more experience than you, said something to the effect of "it works on paper" on a job site with serious problems because of them thinking they were good with "facts and data and shit" ... And they weren't as hot shit as they thought they were..

I wish I had a dollar for every engineer friend of mine that over the last 40 yrs that was unexpectedly let go from a firm that they thought they were hot shit at, because they were good at facts, data and shit.. Or so they thought...

And on both counts, these fellers that were good at facts, data and shit,,,,,, never saw it coming.

I've known more engineers than I can remember. I probably talk to 3-4 county and state engineers a week The only consistent I can point to is that with age, and experience, they seem to come to an understanding that they aren't infallible... And the "good at facts, data and shit attitude dissipates..

Son, you're an engineer.. Get off your high Horse.. If you REALLY want to know how the world works, open your own business.

Oh god...

One comment and now we've completely gotten off track...

That "good with facts and data and shit" wasn't meant to make me seem like hot shit. I know I am just starting off as an engineer. I know I'm still learning a lot from other engineers, but at the same time I know I can more than hold my own. Whatever anecdotal evidence you have, congrats. I've worked with contract engineers that have been pretty terrible too. I've also worked with a lot of very smart engineers.

Forget that comment then. Back to the ACTUAL POINT...

... present actual "facts and data and shit" when you want to refute something I said. Provide a reference. Link to a chart. Something. Don't just say "Well son, back in my day I was naive too. Now I understand" and then act like you proved anything. THAT is what I was telling you to do. The engineer comment was just me saying, in yes, probably somewhat of a snarky way, "try me, I'll follow the facts/reasoning."

It really had nothing to do with being an engineer. Though that seemed to have struck a nerve with you.

But like I said, on the actual point, saying "I'm older so there" does NOTHING to support a viewpoint. Present hard evidence, facts, etc to actually make a point. Fair enough?
