Flags are a pride thing anyway. Considering the states that formed the confederacy felt they were acting in the same manner as the founding fathers, this tends to be a tricky thing. Considering it's an actual battle flag (square shaped) & not the "rebel" or "confederate" flag (3x5, that the kkk adopted- yet never flew during the war between the states) I say let it fly. But southern states who love their southern history in all sorts of ways, are not necessarily embracing the racist, slave history of the past. Southern cooking, hospitality, respect for "sirs" and "mams"... it's just part of the antagonistic leftist culture war. Better to outlaw the gay rainbow flag. That is trutly offencive.......... I lived in Columbia, SC as a youngster (6-11 years old or so) and the debate about the flag was raging just like it is now. For some reason or another they pan to an interview with some good ol' boys (think overalls, missing teeth and the whole nine). One guy I swear to you is holding a shotgun in the foreground-they ask him what they think of the flag. He says simply "this is our flag and if you don't like it you can get on out!". I will forever remember this moment of television. Anyway, the argument most people make is "heritage, not hate." I know when you delve deep into the history of the ACTUAL flag flown over buildings it wasn't the confederate flag, battle flag etc. But, I think it's pretty hard to argue against the fact that the flag also symbolizes a deep issue of race and segregation in the Deep South. It's a pretty decent slap to the face of people who still deal with some of those problems today. If it were me I'd take them down from government buildings but of course never ban them entirely. If it makes everyone feel better it won't happen though-voters in SC overwhelmingly support it being up and when the Governor was asked point blank about taking it down she dodged it like the plague. Ergo, represents a history of division. I refer to my country at the United States, therefore flying another other flag is simply folly. Gotta go. The Dixiecrats pushed for it because it was a big "fuck you" to the northern Democrats and blacks in the South. You can argue of what actual flag was used for what, or say the war really wasn't about slavery, but at the end of the day it is about what that flag represents to most people. It represent racism and discrimination. I wouldn't want to see constant reminders of how past generations of my race were slaves, and how that flag represents the fight to keep them. It us a perception thing more or less. I'm not from the south, so my opinion shouldn't affect the outcome one way or another. It seemed to represent more of just being a rebel over anything else. Today that flag is owned by the racists and I would be for retiring it to a museum now.
