My wife was surprised that I didn't like it, other than the ominous sound effects tied to the impending air strikes and bombs. The story line effectively used time changes to show us the non-war lives, or pre-disaster times of a few characters were. It also did a nice job of showing how an air bomber played by Tom Hardy was intimately immersed in saving people down on the beaches, even though none of those he saved would ever know who he was, even if all survived. That as a nicely done piece of the movie. The covering the lives of a few other soldiers and involved citizens reminded me of the Titanic style of time line development. The story of Dunkirk is really something special. As explained to me Hitler's decision not wipe out everyone at Dunkirk was a fatal mistake that started the ball rolling to his eventual demise. And I think in that, this is where the movie left me empty. I don't believe this movie is as effective at portraying Dunkirk, as say the movie Midway was in doing its job. "The Air" was by far the best part of the film, but not taking anything away from the story and the civilian efforts to reach Dunkirk to render aid, escape and the courage they shown. The other aspect in the interesting timeline spread (of 3 events) covered 2 guys (1 frenchman) flight off the beach and onto a boat - who both manage to avoid death many times held the most sway in the tragic results of the fateful doom at every corner. all in all its a must see movie. Being a crazy megalomaniac who's own staff was terrified of him, Nazi Germany came close to defeating Great Britain until our aid plus things like cracking the Enigma code was just enough to recover. Now had he been able to get a working nuke all bets were off, he'd destroy London, Paris and who knows what else. The 1,000 year Reign of terror turned out to be a dream in his head.
