THE BROWNS BOARD

Losing, then Winning

The NFL is much different than the other major sports leagues when it comes to losing a championship game then coming back to win a title. The following are the teams that last won titles after losing the finals the year before:

NBA: GS Warriors win title in 2017 after losing in 2016...-0- years since it happened.

MLB: Kansas City Royals win WS in 2015 after losing the WS in 2014... 2 years since it happened.

NHL: The Pittsburgh Penguins win the title in 2009 after losing the Stanley Cup finals in 2008...8 years since it happened.

NFL: The Miami Dolphins win the Super Bowl in 1972 after losing it in 1971. ...45 years since it happened.

Ergo...perhaps it is good news for the Indians. Teams in MLB have come back recently.

But...bad news for the Atlanta Falcons. SB losing teams do not win the following year. Not in this day and age.

Note though, that the year before the Dolphins came back to win the SB after losing....the Dolphins lost that one to the Cowboys...who had lost the SB the previous year.

And note: In the NBA, the Cavs came back to win the Finals the year after they lost.

In the NBA, since the last time it happened in the NFL...8 times had a team come back from losing the Finals the year before (9 counting the Warriors this year)

Cavs lose in 2015 then won in 2016

Spurs lost in 2013 then won in 2014

Heat lost in 2011 then won in 2012

Lakers lost in 2008, then won in 2009

Celtics lost in 1985 then won in 1986

Lakers lost in 1985, then won in 1985

76ers lost in 1982 then won in 1983

Supersonics lost in 1978 then won in 1979

The NHL though was almost the same as the NFL. Before the Penguins came back in 2009 after losing in 2008, it was the Winnipeg Jets of the WHA who came back in 1978 after losing in 1977. In the NHL proper it had not happened since 1967/1968 by the Montreal Canadiennes.

The MLB is not much better, while the Royals came back in 2014/2015, the only other time it has happend since 1970 was when the Oakland As lost the WS to the Dodgers in 1988, then came back to beat the Giants in 1989.

So, maybe the news is better for the Cavs next year than for the Tribe this year. NBA teams make a comeback of this sort much more often than the teams in the other sports.

In the NFL even, the last team to even make a repeat appearance after losing the Super Bowl were those 1990s Buffalo Bills.

Ok....interesting stat......so the low bar is 4-12.....

I think we can meet that.....

Most of those teams didnt do too well going fwd....Cowboys and Pathers were in the SB 2 years later....

Which road will we follow?

We need to find some Lucky Road would be my guess Mud. (Road 1)Tony Dungy "Build" The Yuckineers defense to hand it over to Chucky Gruden in 2002 to win a SB. Can Peppers play (S John Lynch)??///,Brantley/Ogunjobi,(DT Warren Sapp)??////Collins(LB Derek Brooks)??,/////Garrett(DE Simon Rice)?? Gruden than won with a trusted Brad Johnson at age 34 to play QB..With a key FA move on a WR in Keyshawn Johnson from Jets.(Road 2)Took Tony Dungy to get fired from TB to fall into a QB named Peyton Manning at Colts..(insert pinch me here, were dreaming :P) The Right turn is on Road #1 imo.. If we look at the progress of Shelton & Kirksey now? 3 years may not be out of the question of a playoff run? But it will take some timely key FA's to fill in some re-aging blanks. My hope is Haden & Thomas are around to see it..

Yeah, you and me have discussed in a previous thread how much we like the potential parallels we have with that Tampa team Gruden took over and tweaked. Nice job with the examples Gumbs!

FWIW, Gruden didn't bring Keyshawn to Tampa - Johnson had been in Tampa since 2000. Gruden got WR Keenan McCardell in 2002, which was a great move. In just 14 games, McCardell contributed 61 rec 670 yds 6 TDs at 32 years of age. In 2003, he made the Pro Bowl with 84 rec 1174 yds 8 TDs.
