THE BROWNS BOARD

Welcome Danny Shelton & "Feast Mode"

Pretty cool that our consensus favorite landed on our doorstep at #12 and he's a Cleveland Brown. High 5s to everyone! The apex of our defense just got a lot stronger. Love this kid's motor that has him playing EVERY down.

Here's some highlights of opponents held hostage to "give your soul to God because your ass belongs to Shelton!" My apology for the disturbing Joey Porter-like lyrics (you might want to turn your volume down/mute or take a Tums before-hand)

scary that Shelton got to near the sideline and made a tackle. That's a 340 NT that

can move like that? Leap into the air?

I think the rest of the division said "well, ((*&^(*&".

Shedding 15 lbs of gut would add speed to this stout guy and make the perfect NT. Ricci and his staff got their work cut out for them. Chisel this guy down a little and rebuild with pure muscle would turn him into an all-pro like Williams will be. He has that kind of talent.

IMO, there was a big drop-off from Danny Shelton to Malcolm Brown. Some people LOVED Brown enough to insist he wouldn't last until pick #19. That said, a lot of teams needing to address the interior of their dline didn't see him as a round 1 gotta-have to the extent he lasted until #32 overall.

Shelton needs to get with the conditioning coach... today. I worry about his athleticism a little bit. If he can get a little more burst off the snap and keep his weight around 330, he'll be great in a year or two. He can handle run-stuffing responsibilities this year, as a rookie, but if gets more athletic he can really get pressure on the QB up the middle, which would be very nice...

Overall, a good pick though...

That seems like great advice for 99% of DTs built like that (and Phil Taylor in particular).

However, Shelton is unique enough for some devil's advocates here:

1) Because he usually lines up closest to the snap; his first 2-3 steps are more important than speed. On film, he doesn't have much trouble closing on guys that have better speed than him. There's also some pretty impressive agility.

2) His book cover might show a need to trim body fat; but the story inside says he never comes off the field. The reason he doesn't come off the field is because he has surprisingly good endurance for a guy that size.

3) In a world that emphasizes Darwin's Laws, I can't tell you how many times I've seen this guy epitomizing why you never give up on a play to the extent he beats faster defenders than he to a scrambling QB outside of pocket or ballcarriers reversing field.

4) Trimming up a guy with his power can come at the expense of not overpowering the opponent on plays he doesn't come out of his stance with ideal pad height. I'm sure the the toll of him never coming off the field showcased a tendency for him to come out of stance with higher pad heights late in a game/drive. Cleveland likes to rotate fresh legs in and out especially if this year's injury volume up front is a lot more cooperative than 2014.

Keep him fat dumb and happy as long as he performs.

LOL! Diehard, it's as simple as "Sic em!"

It was still refreshing to learn Shelton was an Academic All American as we evolve/progress from counting on hollow domes like Josh Gordon around here.

That pic of him sitting made me think.... "Buddha".

I'll be happy if he just doesn't get heavier.

Get a nutritionist with him... keep him flexible... turn him loose....

Just look at a couple of the vids and what struck me beyond the power he brings is how good (and quick) his play recognition is.

Also takes very good angles.

Consistent with our current "Change the culture" & "Play like a Brown" philosophies.

I LOVE what's happening with the Browns.

I have Thomas & Haden Jerseys. I may just have to get a Shelton...That's how sure I am that this kid will be a stud for us.

With his acquisition could the Browns end up doing more 4-3 than 3-4?

Taylor and Shelton in the middle. Starks and Bryant at DEs.....or put Mingo or Armonty Bryant there. Backups, Winn, Hughes, Kitchen.

But need a name....ala Fearsome Foursome.

Again, hung up on titles. This defense will show multiple fronts based on down, distance and opponent.

Well said Mike!

For those worried about his weight today and moving forward - the pre-draft strength and conditioning had his weight down as far 339 from previous weigh-ins of 355. I'll stop short of saying celebration of his 12th overall status at an all you can eat buffet may threaten that at least temporarily.

There's some clever contract incentives that can make him richer man if he maintains an optimal playing weight. I'm confident our NFL strength and conditioning program and this guy's work ethic will work well in tandem. A lot of the guys that head these programs up have PhDs in Ex Phys so they're not roided up meatheads. Outside of the workouts, they do a great job of assisting players with nutritional needs. I had an invaluable experience volunteering 2 morning a week to Tampa Bay's offseason strength and Conditioning program in 1997-98 BC (Before Cellphones).

Guys that show up to these offseason progam completely out of shape like Phil Taylor can blow out a pec in the very first week of the program. Work ethic isn't something you can flip on and off like a light switch or one will be far too happy sucking oxygen after every 2 plays for the rest of his career. It's strange typing this but hopefully a rookie like Danny Shelton can teach a veteran like Phil Taylor how to prepare himself for an ability to play EVERY down. Being a warrior starts in the inner-chest in my opinion. My favorite part of football is that that there's always going to be work ethic guys like a Wayne Chrebet WINNING over fan-bases from the Me-Shawn Johnsons showing up feeling entitled. The reason this happens is because they've prepared themselves forever for the opportunity to be the go-to guy with a drive/game on the line on 3rd downs. The difference I see between Shelton and Taylor is one guy needs oxygen on 3rd downs while the other wants to be the guy his teams counts on him to be. I'm ecstatic Farmer and staff identified exactly what was missing on the apex of our defense.
