THE BROWNS BOARD

O-line Draft Class of 2015

Tour2ma

Recommended Posts

I've been posting impressions here and there in various conversations, but with a few done it's time to start collecting thoughts.

This initial post is for lists of those I plan to review. Order is as determined by DraftScouts as of today, 2-11-15, as is the expected round the player will go. Links following each player are to the post in which he is reviewed. As reviews are completed I will rank the player as well. My rank is in parentheses.

http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/players.php?genpos=OT&draftyear=2015&sortorder=tsxpos&order=ASC

When at all possible reviews will be based upon game tapes at DraftBreakdown.

Offensive Tackle Reviews

LTs:

  • Brandon Scherff: Iowa (02-02-15) vs. IND/Maryland - No kick dropstep - shuffles; good feet; good hands, but high. Prone to getting bulled by power and faked by speed. Good accel, no drive. Do not run his way much. Head? Strength? Athletic, but fundamentally weak
  • Andrus Peat: Stanford (02-02-15) vs. ND - fldgling kick step; great posture; power, agility, looks to be head of the class by more than a little, NFL ready
  • La'el Collins: LSU (02-09-15) vs. Wis/Auburn/BAMA/OleMiss - Good movement, but lacks fluidity of top prospect, good angles, Power?; most determined game vs. Ole Miss Reaction time? Raw, no drop step; (04/17/15) vs. Florida & Arkansas: easily knocked off bal by lateral push when on run; cannot block faster D on the run, whiffs often; can handle smaller D-lineman across from him... some of the time... Pass Pro remains a liability with min kick-drop and too much bend.
  • Erick Flowers: Miami (02-10-15) vs. FSU/UVA/S.Car - Fluid w/ signs of technique vs. FSU; choppier v SC, but still effective. Does not destroy 2nd level.
  • Cameron Erving: FSU (02-11-15) vs. OK St/ND - no kick; lotta waist bend; feet look heavy; fires out on run blocks; focus? Head? ND's DE Sheldon Day gave fits with low edge rush. I can see as an interior prospect, but would like to see tape on him there.
  • Tyrus Thompson: Oklahoma (02-13-15) vs. WVU - Slow, no tech.. no kick drop; no fireout, awkward
  • Ty Sambrailo: Colorado St. (02-13-15) vs. SanJose St/BC - fledgling kick, good chop steps, decent posture, unchallenged by SJ, runs well and under control, reminds of Bito; conditioning? some fall off late 1st half vs. BC, can pull. Good discipline, quick decisions. Strength?
  • Jake Fisher; Oregon (02-14-15) vs. UCLA/ FSU/ OSU - funny split v UCLA, no kick drop, but chops well with good seat, good shadowing, runs well & drives well, looks lean can add lbs, stands tall, got bulled once, looked lean in white, but now thicker in green (v FSU), 3 diff OSU DEs lined up, only difficulty was with quicks of OSU "LB" #43, beatable cross face? Yes... 43 showed way and other DEs followed.
RTs:
  • T.J.Clemmings: Pitt (02-09-15) vs. Duke/Mia/UVA/VaTech - has kick-drop; latches on; can move; good fire and turn; stays with OG; calm, good decisions; comp level? Can he move to Left side?
  • Daryl Williams: Oklahoma (02-13-15) vs. WVU - fledgling kick, ugly chop with bit wide stance and lean, mild fire a bit upright, crosses feet in retreat
  • Cedric Ogbuehi: TAMU (02-14-15) LT vs. MissSt/SCar; RT vs. Auburn - bad tech, mini kick, weak chop, no base - feet too close; pops up to start run block, almost hops and ends up out of position; escorts well, but low anticipation; @RT v Miss more confident and moved better, but tech still weak; still no drop step.
  • Rob Hevenstein: Wis (04-17-15) vs. LSU - likely RT for life, but surprisingly agile for size, borderline smooth; too high in run block, but gets away with it vs. smaller op; mini-kick in drop, signs of technique; plays thru whistle.

Offensive Guard Reviews
  • AJ Cann: S. Car (02-24-15) vs. TAMU/ Missou - unimpressed; Anchors well v pass rush, moves better than advertised getting quickly to 2nd level, but... gets lost in space. Sees stunts, etc. but can't get to them. Anticipation? Reaction? Some of the latter for sure as he ws eaten up by two diferent Missou DL quick off the ball and taking angles..
  • Adam Shead: OU (02-13-15) vs. WVU - Moved OK on one pull, better pass drop than OTs, no fire
  • Tre' Jackson: FSU (04-17/15) vs. ND/ Ok St. - not athletic enough for ZBS as is, maybe shed a few lbs?

Center Reviews

  • C Hronis Grasu: Oregon (02-14-15) vs. UCLA/ FSU/ OSU - good head/ line calls, but can't handle D-line 1 on 1; lotta 2nd level with good movement, Strength is big question.
  • Reese Dismukes: Auburn (04/17/15) vs. Miss St/ LSU - moves to 2nd level nicely, gets angle and levers well against bigger D... surprisingly tough to budge
  • B.J. Finney: KSU (04-17-15) vs. OK - looks lost while on the move, seldom finds target; beefy, does better locked up 1 on 1 vs D-line, but gets beaten if has to move. - distraction Glenn Gronkowski, TE... yes, his "lil" brother...
  • Andy Gallik: BC (04-17-15) vs. USC - good brawler with surprisingly good movement; raw, but promising - distracted by QB, Darius Wade

Thanks... to be honest I do not think Scherff is that hot of a prospect for the inside. He's a project, an enticingly athletic looking one no doubt (as was Greg Robinson last year), but a prospect, not a plug and play guy.

So far I see only two plug and play OTs: Peat (LT) and Clemmings (RT).

Without a doubt, mik... but more for interior guys than OTs. That said of the 45 players listed there is exactly one Wisconsin lineman on the list... and he's the #13-ranked OT.

Well, what are you saying about these guys in respect to the Browns drafting them?

Just raw notes so far, but were I to sum them up so far I'd have to say I see only one top OT prospect and two worthy of a 1st rounder. The top guy will be long gone before we pick and in any case both will end up in groupings with other position players of greater need.

But with 40 or so to go, hopefully an interior guy and/or a late round OT will impress me.

I don't know how to imbed a gif, but here's a link.

Only 15 seconds, and it's not like Scherff does nothing good, but I see way too much of this from him.

He ain't Zack Martin.

I don't know how to imbed a gif

Are you making a pun?

Nope... no pun... If you can figure out how to turn my link into a viewable gif, please let me know. All I get is a message about not having permission to post link with that extension or some such wording.

Tour, can you talk a little bit more about Clemmings? He seems to be in a lot of mocks for the Browns at #19.

Not a lot more... Clemmings looks very solid on tape. Good technique, good fluid motion. He's very close to Peat, but just not as silky smooth to my eye. Peat looks effortless; TJ looks to be trying a little.

Thing is that he is at RT in game tapes I saw, so I can't project him at LT. Some players flip sides without issue, but others can't... and it does not correlate with how good they are on one side. Should get some idea of this at the Combine.

No doubt in my mind that TJ would upgrade our RT situation, but to spend a first round pick on him. I'd have to be convinced he is also my next LT.

Spent a little time with three OU players today, LT, RT and LG.

Nothing of note except OU needs a new O-line coach. All three play like sumo wrestlers...

LT Tyrus Thompson: Oklahoma (02-13-15) vs. WVU - Slow, no tech.. no kick drop; no fireout, awkward,

RT Daryl Williams: Oklahoma (02-13-15) vs. WVU - fledgling kick, ugly chop with bit wide stance and lean, mild fire a bit upright, crosses feet in retreat

OG Adam Shead: OU (02-13-15) vs. WVU - Moved OK on one pull, better pass drop than OTs, no fire

DirtyOldMan.

I might fit that mold as well, but I'll tell you, the only thing that has changed is the "Old" part.

Your day will arrive soon enough, unless you end up like Bruce Jenner and want a sex change operation or you lose your interest in sex.

Forgot one yesterday and he was my first real surprise, 2nd round rated prospect, Ty Sambrailo. Now my #3 value prospect, I think he may move inside. Dawned on me late as to why... "reminds me of Bito".

Raw notes:

Notes on Jake Fisher...

Looked like a world beater vs. UCLA and FSU, but Buckeye's exposed susceptibility to inside rush. Still looked good enough to slide into #4 slot for now...

Notes on Cedric Ogbuehi: TAMU

Had 2014 tape of Cedric at both LT and RT. It is easy to see why he was moved back to RT. Much more natural movement on the right side; looked the part there. That said he lacks technique on both sides. While he was out of position often, his opponents' inability to capitalize made him seem more effective than he really was.

Cedric Ogbuehi: TAMU (02-14-15) LT vs.

Wasn't it our resident Aggie pimping this kid as a mortal lock for the 1st round and top OT?

My first Center and one I had some hopes for, but strength question was raised vs. OSU. We made great line adjustments exposing weaknesses in both Hronis and Jake Fisher.

C Hronis Grasu: Oregon (02-14-15) vs. UCLA/ FSU/ OSU - good head/ line calls, but can't handle D-line 1 on 1; lotta 2nd level with good movement, Strength is big question.

Tour-take a look at Collins in Senior Bowl tape. I thought I might be wrong which bowl when I did not find him on one of the SB rosters, but he was in it and played very well.

"Wasn't it our resident Aggie pimping this kid as a mortal lock for the 1st round and top OT?"

Me and a lot of other folks who do it for a living early in the year. The experiment from R to L did not work as well as hoped. He is more natural on the R side and would be a steal for the long run in the 3rd if he is still there. Plus his first 2 years were at RG so he has versatility.

Tour2ma what are your thoughts on Jake Fisher? I saw a few scouts on Twitter yesterday saying he had some of the best hands among OTs in this year's draft.
