THE BROWNS BOARD

Josh Gordon Reinstated with 4 Game Suspension

Step 1: Get back on the field.

Step 2: Do something...

We may have the word on step 1 as early as Aug 1st... and history suggests if we don't there is reason for concern. But it is a thumbs-up, then we'll see about step 2.

Going to have to do more.... a lot more... than he did when last we saw him. If he does, then he just might emerge as a walking, "scared-straight" example for our youth corps.

I think I can muster one last round of "here's-hoping" for JG...

Gordon is washed up for this year (2016).

He can apply on Aug 1st.

Then Roger GoToHell has 60 days to find someone to think about it for him ('cuz he can't think on his own....we've seen him try).

He'll take all 60 days and maybe more.....just to show how much power he has.

That puts on Oct 1st. Let's just say a miracle happens and he's reinstated on Oct 1st. And he can NOW join the team and attend his FIRST practice in...well...how freakin' long has it been? He'd have to get in football shape, learn the plays, get into a timing grove with the QB's, etc. etc.

How much could he possibly help us this year anyway? - A wasted season...again.

Actually the 60-day thing is out the window...

Gordon is eligible to apply for reinstatement on Aug. 1st, and Goodell can reinstate him anytime after that. This is a special circumstance, and the timetable outlined in the NFL substance abuse policy does not apply. Gordon's original petition was denied on April 12th after he violated the agreement again, and he was told to come back and try again on Aug. 1. Therefore, the guideline of rendering a decision within 60 days does not apply. Goodell could let him back in on Aug. 2nd if he so chooses.

Roger strung us along unduly in 2014. I don't see a repeat here. If he was satisfied by the meeting and accumulated supporting info, then I expect a quick reinstatement. If not, then there's a reason... and I expect word of that reason sooner, not later.

Goodell initiated (the meeting), which is a good sign for Gordon, who sat out all of 2015. Goodell would not have called him to New York unless Gordon was taking the necessary steps to get back on the field.

Just don't see him stringing out this new, heavily ethnic regime, if Josh is found fit to return. The league, and Roger is the league, has a vested interest in the future success of the Browns. Even more so given the recent report on minority hiring trends.

Good Find T even though it is our lovely MKC ^_^ reporting. This should draw a hush over the building pending a large FO decision. Camp starts Friday 29th thru weekend with 90 on roster. Do camp rosters get expanded from 90 Friday? August 1st is now Pisser Monday. FO makes a future statement on likes of Gordon OR we just add more competition to our WR's in Training Camp? Ocho just sink'od & Manhell has extended his arena league holdout till his buddy knows his future too. Good Luck Josh!! PS- Godell, give the kid a chance to compete in a full Training Camp, (ANYWHERE) Surely Josh could use some "work for it"

RG3 throwing to Gordon, Coleman, Hollywood and Hawk wouldn't suck.

Throw in our Pro Bowl Tight end and record-setting receiving back ... And we've got targets.

That's what I'm telling ya man RG3 is going to have a good season. He's just now old enough where he has seen defenses and his learning years are done. Ya he's been hurt but who hasn't? It's not like he never took the Skins to he playoffs.

So, now he DOESN'T have to render a decision within 60 days? He could wait 'til Christmas if he wanted to?

It's a favoritism kinda thing. If it were Tom Brady he wouldn't have to wait. Since its someone who doesn't cheat then Rodger Dodger doesn't have the time.

24 hours after pissing clean with no response from league, would you not be standing in players union office? Roger can Dodger for only so long..

This never crossed my mind but with Roger it will happen. Great post Z. Josh simply is not bright enough TO GET AROUND THE SCHEDULED SYSTEM.. Maybe the wife can order hgh to the house but it's not for me ;). this league is full of S**t if they think they have a working drug program

Gumby, let's clear this up. If you're a nice clean Boy Scout like Joe Thomas- yeah- there is a scheduled drug test the start of the season. You start failing them- it's another story. When you get to Gordon's strike count (& Leveon Bell isn't far behind- more on that later) you can be random tested at any time, as often as the League feels like testing you. Gordon was tested dozens of times during his suspension and passed them all- except one. Sorry Josh. You even have to let the League know you're traveling- the better to keep tabs on your whereabouts. As a former lab person- the reason Gordon's most recent suspension got extended wasn't because he tested over the limit- he didn't. It was extended because the specific gravity of the pee was too low, and that caused the NFL to rule that it was a diluted sample- ergo, you fail (sort of). Now regarding Bell- he didn't fail a test- just not showing up in a reasonable amount of time when they ring your cell phone counts as a fail. FWIW, cocaine clears out of your body really fast.

Finally responding to Flugle's posts regarding Josh and the purple drank for a strep throat. Yeah, it sure sounds suspicious. Phenergan\codeine AKA the purple drank is probably the best cough medicine known to man- plus codeine is a way better pain killer than swallowing a handful of Advil. But as was pointed out- if you've got a bad sore throat- they're probably not going to give you cough syrup. Other thing is- that stuff is prescription. If Gordon had a legit 'scrip for it- he should have let the tester know about it- and told them to check the pharmacy where he got it.

If I read the Girl Scout of the group MKC report correctly. #9 says In Stage 3 "can be tested up to 10 times per month". Them liar cheating bastards..#FreeJoshGordon.."High, Josh Gordon here. Tell Roger am going to Cabo to hang with ManHell..Piss with you Later".

Drug addicts are usually very good liars. Ever know one? Ever have one in your family? I'm watching Josh Gordon and I think of my brother who is already buried. He started at OG over a guy later snapped the ball to Art Schlichter in the Hula Bowl (Dan Enright - West Point/Army). In 7th grade he was in some 9th grade honors courses getting As. Everything that came easy to him later bored him in challenge. The more people lectured him on what he was turning down - the more this Good Will Hunting story went drinking, partying and hunting instead. Gordon has this fan base thinking "Josh really means business this time." What has changed this time?

Does anyone know why they teach history in school? So people can learn from it. This pertains to everyone but drug addicts putting drugs first. An addict can take you to the cleaners. They're highly skilled and street smart at getting people to feel sorry for them. I'm not falling for it again. If you look at all my posts about prospects - they're rose colored glasses full of optimism. Gordon fooled me all the way up to what I witnessed from him in 2014. He's failed 2 drug tests since. What am I missing here?

Larry, the rest of the story that I hope you read was HOW Josh went from several colleges interested in his elite talent to just Baylor and somebody less. The denial blinders on our board about the guy is unbelievable. He has yet to be a reason this team is winning. In his dream year of 2013, we went 4-12. In 2014, we were 6-4 WITHOUT him and finished 1-5 after he returned as he treated us to 0 TDs, occasional effort and not knowing the plays. When you're not the primary receiver and you advertise to the defense "I have this play off" - are you really helping your QB and teammates? I thought we'd get better when he came back but we got worse. Why? The guy doesn't have ANY heart for this game. He has a very different feeling about football than we want him to have especially with his skill-set. AGAIN, isn't that the reason so many major college programs lost interest in him? Were they validated when he got booted out of Baylor, which was a pretty hard program to get kicked out of apparently.

Okay, so what do we have to lose by giving a guy like Gordon, who is already here, a shot at finally making it through 1 full season without failing a test? We're wasting development/learning curve/reps that comes with experience from this FO's hand selected guys. I'm glad Manziel gave him the advice: "Best buddy, if you go to rehab like I did - they'll think you really mean it this time." Yeah, rehab really means a lot if you're there only to fool people. We flatlined in 2014 when the major distraction returned. There was nothing even remotely similar to the 2013 version we saw. Now, it's even 2 years later with an off season full of Johnny Manziel. Gee, can't wait to see the Jerry Rice that created.... Where is there even a shred of evidence this guy is willing to put football first for once?

Even more disturbing, football is willing to give him the equivalent of about 5 winning lottery tickets but he'd rather lie to an audience willing to buy quick sand about treating strep throat with cough medicine. All those that want to pretend he's just dumb, bought that alibi hook line and sinker. He's addicted to something NFL players aren't supposed to consume. He's outsmarting a lot of people here that just want to call him stupid. He's a drug addict that can't say no so all he's done to date is try to outsmart the drug tests. Larry told us cocaine flushes out fast d/t being water soluble. Same applies to alcohol, which Josh also tested positive for as our fans tried to blame his teammates, coaches and everyone but guess who? Cris Carter had it right. Keeping the lie alive here doesn't help Josh while we have yet to cash in on the win column because of Josh looking no further than what has he done for us lately (2014).

love gordon. but boy is he DUMB.

just stay off the WEED A

Mik, that was great! It's illegal in the NFL even if weed is legal in Colorado. Just ask Shawn Ray.

If you were in our front office the day he gets cleared to play fully knowing what history slam dunks to be inevitable - do you trade the biggest waste of talent in franchise history, cut him or count on him?

Stephen A kept bringing up the only black guys getting caught thing. Can you imagine if they did that in the NBA? We'd be right back to watching a bunch of goofy looking slow white guys in Boston Celtics uniforms winning NBA Championships. That said, I admire LeBron James for being a clean athlete that role models putting his career before partying throughout a willingness to work hard. He'd prolly still keep Cleveland King!

Even if he comes back, plays a good game, scores TDs - he has to do something he's been unable to do since scaring away all the major college football programs: "KEEP OFF THE GRASS!"

1.Pretty sure they know his trade value (if any) 2.Pretty sure HueJax can figure out if Josh truly has his heart back on football. 3. Pretty sure we will hear what kind of football shape Josh shows up in at sit-down also. Hue knows players & Talent. Sashi is the fall guy. Let's just get to the point the office door opens.

#1 above is a good enough sell for addition by subtraction. If not, what did he add to our 6-4 team in progress in 2014? A big enough distraction for a 1-5 flat line when he returned punctuated by actions leading to an in-house suspension. Just out of curiosity, did we do better in 2013 when we won 4 games or in 2014 when we won 6 of our 7 games without him? It ain't like we're going to be giving away Paul Warfield to an offense already equipped with Larry Csonka, Mercury Morris and Jim Kiick with 2 Pro Bowl linemen up front and Bob Griese at QB with Earl Morral backing him up. Paul Warfield actually LIKED football enough to play it where teammates, coaches and fans could rely on him.

#2 above is a head scratcher. Hue is a football coach unless there's another background with clairvoyance I don't know about. People here that have continued to watch Josh give us his sincere apologies and feel bad about it - can't tell if he has his heart back in football because the marijuana use and other things he shouldn't use have kept him from passing urine tests for a whole calendar year. It's how he missed 2 games in 2013, 10 games in 2014, and all of 2015. Now, if there wasn't another failed test during his current suspension we'd almost have 1 big toe to stand on from the side of hope...

#3 One year he came in and was acting like a team leader in the mini-camps and looked to be in great physical shape - but guess what followed? Another suspension. Not much different than being excited to hear if the NFL will let him back for 2016 when he had another failed test we all hadn't heard about just yet. The lie about why he needed to use Codeine as a cough suppressant for Strep Throat tells me the length he will go to try to get away with a lie and continuing to use drugs/substances he's not allowed to use. Same with diluting a piss test instead of being strong enough to refrain from using leading up to it. I've seen no will to change - just a skilled liar easily forgiven because of what he showed he can do in 2013. If we ever got as far as a big game - do you really want our fate to go further in this clown's hands?

Side note: A guy who did a study in the SEC was on the radio with Blaine Bishop 2 years ago. The same guy does annual football preview writeups for the SEC. Anyway, he randomly interviewed/surveyed countless SEC athletes and learned their favorite recreational drug was marijuana. No hangovers ruining the required early morning workouts the next day and no sloppy weight gains to make them sluggish were cited as reasons as well as how good it makes one sleep. He said the amount of use floored him. I guess they're testing in the conference so maybe that has brought the use down some.

At first, I wanted Josh to be what the Honey Badger became when/after being confronted with his final chance with a potential reward of an NFL pay day at the same time. No more margin of error and back to the wall. He even had a season ending injury or 2 that could have triggered use again. It just seems like a football career is more important to him than Josh. The symptoms of taking plays off and not knowing the playbook and a reason to be suspended by the coaching staff look like a guy guy bored with the game/challenge enough to show us football hasn't even come close to being first in his life. Again, this is coming from somebody that is an optimist to a fault about our draft class coming in.

Development of our new WR guys? Har- 1\2 of which probably won't even make the team? FWIW, I'm counting on Gordon about as much as Rashard Higgins- you can bet the Browns thinking will be similar. Some of those rookies can be stashed on the practice squad- something that can't be done with Gordon. If we follow your line of thinking- and Chris Carter's- he'd be picked up by another team almost immediately. As someone else said earlier in this thread- Gordon stays clean and has a Randy Moss career- with the Ravens. Barf. The talent is undeniably there Tom- if it wasn't- the Browns wouldn't still be hanging on to his rights. Plus on a talent\cost basis Gordon is unbelievably cheap.

If Gordon really wanted to have a druggie life- he would have followed in the footsteps of Justin Blackmon or his drinking buddy Johnny "Out of Football". Manziel truly appears to not give a shit- Gordon at least looks like he cares.

I'll 100% guarantee you Hue will have a long talk with Josh- and he steps one inch out of line- he's gone. He fails another drug test- he's gone. & don't forget- if by some miracle Gordon can stay clean for 2 years- the slate gets wiped clean.

My guess is, Josh only wants to come back

, long enough to retire from the

NFL and get a pension...maybe.

as soon as he gets back into the league, I read where they are

going to sue the Browns for his having been suspended before,

which hurt the amount of time he was an active player.

I hope he doesn't come back, and if he does, I hope he gets traded to

the worst place for him, whatever team that would be.

I personally would go with Higgins, if Josh was the other choice.

Larry, I like some of your points (bolded above) believe it or not.

I honestly don't know the answer to the question I am about to ask so I'm not trying to be a wise guy with it. Are the Browns are hanging onto his rights while he is suspended because they're not allowed to get rid of a player that is under suspension for drugs or because he's talented?

They got rid of Manziel as soon as they were allowed to.

Worrying about Gordon becoming a Ratbird when we haven't been able to get him on the field but 5 times since 2013 while he's positioned himself only 1 more failed test away from career curtains seems as far fetched as worrying about getting attacked by spaceships from Mars.

First we would have to colonize Mars. THEN we'd attack ourselves from Mars. That sounds like us.

Josh is a 50-50 shot that he fails another drug test BEFORE being reinstated.

- I was in the seats at Gillette Stadium towards the end of the game when the Patriots fans around me were yelling, "Don't worry about ANYONE ELSE. JUST COVER JOSH GORDON!"

I don't want to lose a guy that can dominate a game the way that he did/could. But the sad reality is, he cannot be trusted to stay away from the grass that's going to get him suspended again.

I've read multiple articles regarding Gordon's meeting with Goodell, as I'm sure we all have. The one constant I'm pulling from these articles is that the meeting was "a good first step" in the process of his reinstatement. Authors are SKEPTICALLY excited about what this means for Gordon. Afterall, no WAY would Goodell offer to meet him in person if Gordon was not on the right track. Goodell would have access to Gordon's drug testing, whereabouts, clinical treatment, and whatever else. Gordon's noticeable absence from social media is also a plus.

Now does this mean that Gordon's return is imminent? Child, please. We're all WAY too smart for that crap, but I also won't dismiss what this meeting means. It means that Gordon has a CHANCE. Not only that, there is a possibility that Goodell has all that he needs from Gordon in order to make a ruling. Why meet with Josh if Goodell still needed documentation? To me, this sounds like the last step for the NFL to make a decision. If Gordon wasn't doing what he needed to, or if the documentation and records were incomplete, I'm quite certain the meeting would not have taken place. Why would Goodell waste his time? I also seriously doubt the meeting was to tell Gordon that his application is being denied. When Gordon was denied about three months ago, I don't believe there was an in-person meeting to deliver that information.

I'm guarded optimistic, and by that I mean "there is a chance Gordon comes back to the NFL, but it's about 20%".

Listen, our Browns need some damn things to go our way. Let's start with getting this guy back on the field.

No concern over the few days that have passed since the meeting....yet. I'm still optimistic for all the reasons I wrote up earlier.

But if camp opens without word, then confidence is going to start dropping.

From everything I've read, it seems like we're going to open camp WITHOUT word. Now, the authors that wrote the information don't have an inside leak or anything, so they could be wrong. What they appear to be going on is how long his application took previously. Now, this could be a poor comparison because it appears that Goodell and the NFL knew of Josh's diluted urine sample, thus, were in no hurry to make the decision (denial).

I realize all of this is complete speculation, but something tells me that we won't have to wait long to hear word on his status. If Josh hasn't been doing what he was supposed to, I seriously doubt Goodell would have invited him for a PERSONAL meeting. To me, the meeting is indicative of Josh's reinstatement. Whether that is "sooner or later", is anybody's guess. Hell, I could be completely wrong about the entire thing and Josh could once again be out of football.

But I doubt it. We'll know in two weeks...one way or the other. Fingers crossed people...this guy could do so much if he finally figured his life out.

In one of the multiple articles I read last week (no link or source, sorry), I read that

Goodell indicated there will no decision forthcoming until the beginning of the

regular season. Let's face it: Gordon has no goodwill with NFL headquarters. With his

track record, no one in the NFL offices is going to be in any hurry to do anything for

Josh Gordon.

Gordon hasn't impressed anyone on the football field in 3 years. I don't think I would be getting my hopes up.

My high school football coach used to constantly remind us: "if you love this game - you pay the price and sacrifice."

Any examples of what Josh Gordon has sacrificed for his love of football?

Here's a cut and paste from the article in my previous post: Have any of you played for a high school coach who would be ok with you walking after a dropped ball in practice? Me neither. When national football watchers are “shocked” that you “loaf a lot” it’s time to take inventory.

I know how popular the "he's just stupid" angle is. I just don't agree that's his #1 show stopper. I don't see a guy that loves football enough to suit up. The last 4 times he did suit up - there wasn't much passion coming out of him.

Here's a timeline from Wikipedia of his NFL troubles after his college football career abruptly hit strike 3 for those refusing to understand why he kicked off his NFL career on strike 2 with the 1 team willing to take a chance on him:

On June 7, 2013, the NFL announced that Gordon would be suspended for the first two games of the 2013 season due to violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy.

On July 5, 2014, Gordon was arrested for driving while impaired in Raleigh, North Carolina.

On August 27, 2014, Gordon acknowledged that the NFL suspended him for one year for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. On September 19, 2014, his suspension was reduced to 10 games amidst the new NFL drug policy. Gordon was officially reinstated on November 17. He only played 5 games and caught 24 passes for 303 yards.

On December 27, 2014, exactly one year removed from being selected into the Pro Bowl, the Browns suspended Gordon from the final game of the 2014 season due to a violation of team rules. My edit, the team that was 6-4 before he returned - lost 4 of the 5 games he played in.

As of January 2015, Gordon faced another year-long suspension due to testing positive for alcohol use. Gordon entered the NFL's substance abuse program after pleading guilty to a driving while impaired charge in September 2014 and was prohibited from consuming alcohol during his time in the program. Gordon was officially suspended for one year on February 3, 2015 and won't be able to return until the start of the 2016 season.

On January 20, 2016, Gordon applied to the league for reinstatement. His request was denied in March when it was reported that he'd failed another drug test.

At least they left out the episode where he got pulled over for speeding with a big bag of weed in his car that just so conveniently belonged to his buddy...

Actions always speak louder than empty promises. It's not that tough to pass a drug test folks. Good Lord!

OK, a couple of tokes and a beer got him what: 3 years.

Got it.
