you know what, I hope this does happen...so that enough people get infuriated over it and start demanding simple cars again that go real fast but don't need a cray super computer in em to stay on the road. Srsly fuck this. I can't wait to have a bike again and work on it but my condo complex doesn't have available garages and i'm not keeping a 20k bike outside all year in NE OH.

GM - government motors. and now, JOHN DEERE? The only way I accept that, is if I get a free,

permanent, for the life of the vehicle guarantee and free service ON-SITE, and they pay me for time

lost while it has been needing repaired, and as long as they are servicing it.

 

IOW's, they can go sit on a cactus. Carmakers have been making cars so you can't work much on em anyways.

I really wish somebody would make a 1966 Chevy Belaire with a 250 six in it replica. I'd buy one in a NY second.

I wonder if Intel will follow suit and use that DRM whatever ruling to try to get rid of system builders like I've been hearing rumors of now for awhile. Get ready for the era of the market dictating demand to the consumer on a level never seen. It'll make everything those Rooskie commies ever said about us look like comically vast understatements.

Yeah but if they started making simple cars again you'll get your panties in a bunch over the increase in Co2 emissions.

carmakers might be more squeamish with possible liability against hackers?

 

I mean with ABS systems that are not run with an encrypted / secure type of software - there is possibility that tampering that can be done.

And like Hastings fateful accident - Add to it a hack to its throttle and you get.... well

 

It wouldnt surprise me at all that they (carmakers) will switch to more propriety driven decisions on systems run by a computer, which is just about everything electrical now.

 

And with it - no access to reprogram or "flash" a PCM / ABS module without spending BIG $$ to service them....

Interesting that Tesla's not on the list, and they're probably the most high-tech cars of them all - they've made all the software and hardware in the cars open source, hoping that other people will build on the systems they've created. Seems preferable.

The problem is once this happens, as the article suggests, industries from all over the electronics market will follow their lead.

 

I don't see a liability issue as being the purpose of trying to create this legislation. If someone alters the programming of the car, thats on the person doing the altering, not the dealership or the manufacturer.

 

If I have a pool built and decide to fill it with battery acid, thats on me if somebody dies in it. If I send you an email with a virus in it, it's not Dell's fault. This is obvious stuff.

 

Its more than likely (at least in part) what Steve suggested. They want that service money and more. And thats a complete manipulation of the market and the system.

 

I think it goes farther than that though. I think this is more about the customization part. In other words, if you want to go faster buy a vette, if you want better gas mileage buy a volt, if you want more power buy the John Deere 9000, etc., rather than reprogramming whatever you have to do it. This has nothing to do with pirating music from a tractor or your vehicle losing functionality and killing a bus full of nuns. The liability arguement is a joke.
