Right, there are plenty of limitations currently, in terms of efficiency of solar capture (20% at most), storage capacity etc. But to say with any degree of certainty that there'll never be a time when we don't have these limitations is foolish. Obviously with material science at it's current level and engine advancement where it is....OF COURSE solar power to fly something that's 10's of thousands of lbs seems unlikely. Who knows though, solar power could be used in the future to provide hydrogen through electrolysis. We just don't know what people are going to come up with in 50 years. I used to sit on the flight line and watch the occasional c5 take off and could hardly believe it would clear the fences at the end of the runway.
