THE BROWNS BOARD

Resign Sheard and pay Taylor

Hello All,

First time posting. I haven't heard any rumors of working a deal with Sheard so I'm assuming he's hitting free agency which will be a huge blow to us. Same old story, we lose our good players and draft high to replace them. We need to pick up the 5.5M option on Taylor and pay the guy becasue he makes our D better and we can afford it, he's a beast. Let Rubin go and I'm not opposed to drafting Shelton or Brown (no Armstead) to really beef up our DL. Secondary is a concern when Screen and hits the market. We need him back, I really don't want us to use another high draft pick on a cb this year. And pay Gipson. Gipson proved worthy 3.3M so place the 1st round tender and make a team give up their 1st for rights to sign him. Amazing all 4 of these guys were drafted 3 regimes ago so I may seem naive, but they all looked good when on the field last year and know our system. Can we still have some continuity at least on defense??

love sheard but think o'neill's scheme is not exactly what he's fitted for (see mingo thread).

i absolutely love phil taylor but now after the injuries can we feel confident that he can be a 16 game a year NT?

I would say losing Phil Taylor did as much damage to us stopping the run as losing Mack did to the run game. I'm not a Dr. so I'm not sure how vulnerable that knee is and if the strength will be back enough to play to his potential, but he's 26 with a lot of heal time. I don't listen to my gut often but today he says he'll be fine, take a chance. As for Sheard, I have not read the Mingo thread and there's always the question of scheme-fit, but I thought he looked pretty good last yr. Versatile, above-average, good at a lot of things but not "great" at anything. But still, probably the best free-agent we have to lose.

Taylor's option was picked up last offseason. He hasn't really bought into the 3-4 NT but has the talent, he just has to stay healthy.

Sheard is not a fit for the 3-4 and this is an incredible draft for edge rushers. Vic Beasley, Shane Ray, Randy Gregory, Eli Harold, Mate Orchard, Lorenzo Mauldin, and the guy from Washington who I will not even attempt to spell his name, are all great prospects.

It surprises me how many players Browns fans want to keep. This team has barely won any games with these players yet every time one leaves or looks to be leaving, the fans are angry about it.

The Browns had a very deep Defensive Line last year, but as deep as it was it was still devastated by massive injuries.

We want to keep these players because they have talent and provide that depth. Losing them does not assure that you will replace them with equal talent....and certainly doesn't help the depth issue.

Not just a mater of edge rushers... matter of needing a 3-down OLB to play opposite Krugs. When Sheard is opposite him, it's the closest thing to a 5-man D-line since Allen's "over-the-hill-gang" sprang one on Green Bay in an early '70's playoff game.

Yep....the ole 5-2.....(saw that more than once).....

And when the 5 failed, I kept hearing how bad the 2 were......

. Well when sheard and krug are in there are almost always only two interior lineman. I dont like that formation but pet seemed to love it all season. I hate two dl and two standing olb'ers

Your past girlfriends haven't won any awards but I bet you were pretty pissed when they left you.

Same thing here. They may be ugly bitches, but they are our ugly bitches.

Incorrect.

Phil Taylor hasn't just been injured.. he SUCKS. He is literally a gigantic first-round bust.. and that trade down from Julio Jones is looking foolish.

Sheard, just like Cameron, refused to talk to the Browns FO.

We do need to draft DL.. because we're losing Taylor, Sheard, and Rubin at a minimum.

WTF are you talking about. Taylor has been injured.....but has played well when he has been in there.

We are talking about Phil Taylor.....Defensive Tackle for the Cleveland Browns. I am not sure which Phil Taylor you are talking about.

When we had Phil Taylor for the Thursday night game, the Bungles had no answer, they couldn't run cause of the beast in the middle and they couldn't pass cause Dalton is ass cheeks, and bam, Brownies 24 Bungles 3

Phil hasn't been a bust at all. He's been a steady presence and solid contributor. Not all first round picks are rockstars or busts. Some just end up being effective, its that simple.

Taylor is going nowhere this year.

Yeah- I would think Sheard would at least listen to offers.

But- sounds like the Browns aren't interested. http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/6597/jabaal-sheard

Rubin will definitely either be cut or seriously restructured- not worth anything close to $8 million.

Another thing to consider in this is that the FA defensive tackle market is pretty impressive this year. Rubin had a pretty disappointing year, I wouldn't mind letting him go and either drafting a DT or picking up one in FA.

I'm not crazy about Taylor but as I understand his salary is full counted against the cap even if we cut him.

Of ESPN/Polian's top rated FA DTs.....four of them come from the Lions:

1. Suh Lions

2. Terence Knighton Denver

3. Jared Odrick Miami

4. Terrell McClain Dallas

5. CJ Mosley Lions

6. Alan Branch, Pats

7. Dwan Edwards Panthers

8. Nick Fairly Lions

9. Andre Fluellen Lions

10. Kevin Vickers KC

Polian actually ranked Sion Fua ahead of Rubin. Not so sure about that.

Surprised Wilfork isn't on that list but I suppose age is getting to him. The top 4 of that list are very good though-Knighton would be a solid FA pickup but I'm not sure what his price tag is going to be.

Polian is a tard. Rubin is a good space eater but isn't someone I want to over pay. He offers nothing in the pass rush so we should be able to find a young hungry guy to fill his role.

I think we're ok at nose tackle with Phil Taylor and John Hughes. We need to focus on getting another versatile DE to solidify our front 7

I think we're good at the 5 tech, imo, with the Bryant's.

100% agree with this. I was at that game and seen first hand just how much of a disruption big phil was to that offense. Wasnt anywhere close to 100% and every time i saw him he was fired up and talkin shit and smashing someone. I remember thinking to myself what a force he could of been last year of he woulda stayed healthy.

Try to keep in mind that just 2 seasons ago our defense was top 8 for 15 weeks, and top 11 after the season. I know that doesn't mean much, but players like Sheard, and Taylor helped us get there.

Taylor due to injuries may come at a cheaper price also.

Personally I believe in the old adage, if you don't have a replacement, then maybe we shouldn't cut. I know there are other reasons players are cut, but following this simple rule can only help us.

With the exveption of suh...we should really make some offers to players on that list. Phil needs a running mate. We cant fold on the middle if he gets hurt again

We still have Billly Winn and The Sausage King (John Hughes) no? Do you not consider them Phil's running mates?
