Browns149
Just got the test back, and my dog has heartworm. I have had dogs for my entire life, 45 years, and never has this happened. He goes into the vet tomorrow, and I am very scared for him. He is a big, young, very active dog, so from what I have learned, he can beat this, but still, it sucks Anyone else have to deal with this? He was tested 7 months ago and he was fine, now he is positive for it
OldBrownsFan
Really sorry to hear that. I was just thinking today I probably better get my dogs on heartworm pills. I usually do not give my dogs heartworm medicine until mosquito season as that is how they get the heartworms. Hopefully some things are going to work in your favor such as your dog being young and strong as well as the dog must have gotten the heartworms recently and maybe they won't be advanced. Hoping you will get a good report from the vet.

Browns149
He had a shot and had to stay overnight at the vet. Now we have to wait until July 16 for the rest of the treatment. He will get another shot that day, stay overnight again. Then he gets another shot the next day, and he has to stay ovenight again. Then hopefully ever thing is good. The hardest part is he has to remain calm. No walks around the neighborhood, no chacing the rabbits and gophers in the yard. He is already going stir crazy having to stay in the house almost all day. calfoxwc
I hope everything goes great. We always used the heartworm pills, they say you should use them in the winter, but I never thought so. But you're in Ohio, we are, too. At least they spray in a lot of urban areas. We're on a farm, so.....
ballpeen
He can beat it. The meds won't kill the worm. They will prevent the worm from have offspring, which will kill the dog. They can live with a worm in the heart. They can't once dozens are present.
