Now that the NBA and NHL Finals have been played , here is the last year that each of the 48 major league cities (or market areas) in the US and Canada won a professional sports championship, or for those markets with no titles, the year they first had a major sports franchise there. By next year another "market area" will have to be added with the expansion of the NHL into Las Vegas, and the move of the Raiders there. The NHL held the expansion draft for the Las Vegas Golden Knights last night.

This will give the NHL 31 teams...but that is an unwieldly number, ergo, the NHL is bound to add another team soon. Potential markets could include "new markets" : Quebec City, Hamilton, and Saskatoon in Canada. Potential US cities for NHL expansion include Seattle, Houston, Milwaukee., but these all currently have teams in the other major sports.

Another interesting thing I look at here is the "parity" matter. I look back 32 years (because that is the number of teams in the league with the most teams...the NFL)...and I see how many different teams have won championships over the last 32 years.

Thus, for now, I go back to 1985...and come up with this:

The NFL has had 15 different teams win titles in those 32 years (Bears sneak in with last title in 1985)

The NHL also has had 15 different teams win titles in those 32 years.

The MLB has had the most different champions: 18 teams have won titles (and the Cleveland Indians lost 3 WS...two in extra innings of the 7th game....fuck me)

The NBA has had the least "parity" In 32 years, only 10 teams have won titles. (But yes, Cavs were one of them). Lakers, Celtics, Spurs, Bulls have dominated. In fact, only two teams have won just one title in that time: Cavs, Mavs. Otherwise all other teams to win a title have won multiple titles (including Golden State)

The Lakers have won 8 titles since 1985, Bulls 6, Spurs 5, Pistons 3

In the NHL, the Penguins have won the most titles since 1985 period with 5. Red Wings and Edmonton Oilers won 4. Blackhawks 3. Seven teams only won one title.

In the NFL, The Pats 5 is the most in that time, followed by the Giants 4, the Cowboys, 49ers and Broncos won 3. Six teams won a single title since 1985.

In the MLB, the Yankees have won 5 titles since 1985. The Giants won 3. Five teams won 2, and 9 teams won just one.
