The Hobbit, Battle of Five Armies.

Resident Tolkien Fanatic checking in. Yall want some battles- you got it.

I'm not going to rate it- or give away too many spoilers, because I can't hardly be objective. If you've read the books- you have to know by now Jackson took some serious artistic license on several points- Azog should never have been in any of the movies- the Dwarves killed him off in the Battle in front of the gates of Moria. Of course, you have to enhance a few scenes for screenplay drama.

I will say the White Council rescuing Gandalf from Dol Gildur is way cool- and again- us Lore Masters know they weren't really sure at the time if that was Sauron or not.

Complaints? Jackson could have done a better job of tying up the loose ends at Erebor. Positives are he did a pretty good job of linking the Hobbit into what happens 60 years later in Lord of the Rings.

So if you're a Tolkien fanatic it's must see. And if you're into action adventure, it's certainly worth a look.

Can't wait to see this. I don't mind it was three movies, I know its partially money grab and partially Jacksons vision. But if it has lotr, take my money!

How'd you get to see it early?

Definitely has a "Return of the King" feel to it. As to how I got to see it early- Midnight showing. Since I usually don't get off work until 11:30 no big deal. :)

I would like to know what you think is better.

In book form? Martin's game of thrones series is wildly better. David eddings' 'the Belgariad' and 'the malloreon' were both better epics. Even weak juvenile shit like Weiss and Hickman were better. Harry fuckin' potter was better. Tolkien sucks balls. The Lord of the rings sucked.

I've suffered through the first lord of the rings movie and it blew. Trash. I will not ever watch another.

I am talking about the movies, not the books.

Anyone can have an opinion about some fantasy sci-fi book being better or not. There are too many of those to compare....though some say that the Dune series is the one great series that could match LOTR. (We used to have a Steeler fan on here that propped up the Hyperion/Endymion series. I read them and liked them)

But for this, just stick to just movies.

Heh

Well I've read Lord of the Rings trilogy probably 18 times. Not for many years though and love them.

I like Game of Thrones a lot but never tried either of your others. Read a few books of the Wheel of Time, goes nowhere really.

The Bartimaeus trilogy is great I like that it lost. Never started Harry fucking Potter.

"No one in The Lord of the Rings can say so much as 'hand me that spoon' without risking a response like, 'Do you mean Fobulir, the Spoon of Dessert? Forged in Glomiel during the reign of Hothemor, this spoon has ferried rich custards to the beards of kings and dwarves, and all sing of its unparalleled elegance of curvature. Use it with care, my friend; gladly do I give it.' I dont know what things cost in Middle Earth, but I bet everyones paying too much."

Different strokes for different folks. I suppose it depends on how deep you want to immerse yourself in the Fable. MHO is Harry Potter has the depth of a Cat in the Hat kiddie story compared to LOTR. I enjoyed the Potter movies, but I wouldn't watch them 50X over like I have LOTR. Crap, Tolkien was such a damn genius he created a couple functional languages in his spare time just for kicks to insert into the books. "Ash nazg durbatuluk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatuluk, ag burzhum ishi krimpatul." I can still recite that one from heart- it's the Black Speech inscription on the Ring of Power- "One Ring to rule them all, one Ring to find them, one Ring to Rule them all, and in the Darkness bind them. I wouldn't bother you with Quena Elvish from Galadeiel's lament when they left Lothlorien.

I probably could have made a lot more money in my life if I had spent more time memorizing my science texts instead of LOTR. I used to have a standing bet in college- you give me any two lines in the books- I'll give you the next two.

As far as movies go give me "the princess bride" over "lord of the rings" any day.

You're welcome, enjoy. :)

PS- and a minor spoiler- Jackson made Balin such a likable dwarf- it's even more sad he got killed off around 40 years later when he made the very bad decision to try and retake Moria.

& PPS- as Gandalf would say. Cisco. Tolkien created his mythology so perfectly- even someone who knows the 1,700 pages as well as I do, it took me years to be able to take a couple legit pot shots at the story.

The Silmarillion was an extremely ambitious piece of work that was not completed by the time of his death. Later his son, admittedly a very minor talent, tried to cobble it together. Nearly unreadable.

Actually, I have read it. The first part is a very dry history.....but as you go on it is much more dramatic and interesting. At least it was for me.

I agree with both of the above. Tolkien didn't have the time to finish up all the loose ends before he died. The Silmarillion was painted with a much broader brush. There's a mother lode of material there should Jackson ever get the motivation to do another Trilogy, and the Tolkien estate would let him.

Morgoth & Ungolianth destroying The Two Trees.

The Exile of the Noldor- (Gandalf took on one Balrog) Feanor took on around seven, before they killed him.

the tale of Beren and Luthien.

Turin and that real nasty dragon Glarung.

The Downfall of Numenor. (Gee, you find out why Sauron wound up as a pretty much disembodied spirit.)

Celebrimbor and the forging of the Rings of Power. (And how Sauron figured out how to make his).

Larry I do tip my hat to your superior knowledge of All Things trilogy.

I've probably read the whole thing 18 or so times but still feel like a piker compared to you. Personally I wouldn't want to see Jackson tackle The Silmarillion given his penchant, lately, for spectacle over substance.

I suppose if he could control himself and keep the substance strong but presented in an entertaining fashion it would be very valuable. If not, well, it might be entertaining but of little value.

Too bad Tolkien died before he finished it. I doubt there are many people in the world with the same combination of genius and the gift of master storyteller.
