I know if I got demoted in a job I would have begun looking for a different employer. Seems like the Browns org. could have handled it better by letting him go sooner instead of telling him three weeks after the draft when other teams already have their personnel dept set. Actually, all the teams in the NFL have their personell Dept.s signed through the draft. Recall when Mike Lombardi took over here as putative GM. He had to leave all the guys from the previous administration in place through the draft. But then he fired them all...about 3 weeks later when their contract ran out. Also recall that in his case, while he couldn't get rid of them without breaching their contracts, he could undermine their efforts. Remember, in that draft he made the picks in like the first round, then traded every other draft pick except for like the 7th rounders. Essentially, rounds 2-5/6 are where the scouting departments make their bones. He basically said a big fuck you to his own scouting department. OK, and who did Lombardi pick that year? Where is Leon McFadden now? Where is Jamoris Slaughter now? Where is Garrett Gilkey now? The one guy he got lucky with: Armonty Bryant.....7th rounder who actually has possibly outplayed the guy Lombardi took in round one: Mingo.
