THE BROWNS BOARD

Browns sign TE Rob Housler.

Looks like he's still a project. Possibly an H-back project. Really strong measureables that have not translated.... yet... And as long as he's been around a move to the PS would seem doable.... if he's still eligible.

DraftSCout notes from last season...

03/08/15 - TE Rob Housler, unrestricted FA update, never developed into the offensive weapon the team hopes. Housler has excellent speed, but was inconsistent as a receiver and a poor blocker. He will play elsewhere in 2015.

09/29/14 - TE Rob Housler should be ready to play this week after missing Week 3 with a hip injury. Housler, one of two starting tight ends, has caught the ball well so far this season.

09/22/14 - TE Rob Housler, who missed last week's game with a hip injury, should be able to practice this week.

09/19/14 - TE Rob Housler (hip) is questionable for Sunday's game vs. the San Francisco 49ers.

12/03/13 - TE Rob Housler, who caught 14 passes in the previous two weeks, took a step backward in last week's game. He had three catches for 21 yards but dropped an easy pass that would have resulted in a first down.

Word from Cardinals fans is that he has stone hands, runs awful routes, can't block, but is a great athlete if he has the ball in his hands due to his size/speed combo. They were all happy to see him leave.

In other words, we should still be looking for a TE in the draft, eh?

He's 6'5" and can be coached up. This was a decent signing for the Browns because he can play at an NFL level right away. Some of the tight ends in the draft will take time to develop. I agree with this signing. The Cardinals played three quarterbacks last year and each one had a favorite target. Signing Housler now will give the coaches and the players ample time to develop chemistry. He's still young and might surprise some people.

Dray, 28 yrs. old. 6'5" 250lbs. FA-2017-----Barniage, 29 yrs. old. 6' 5" 255lbs. FA-2016------Housler, 27 yrs.old 6' 5" 250lbs. FA-2016.. Compared to our WR's got to love the size. Age and Possible losing 2 to FA after next season. Yea, we may want to get a TE we can School, but it moves the need down the list to 5,6 or 7th round or draft a TE higher in 2016. Flipo has got a plan that's going to include Backs working in combos with TE's and not the old, run up the middle or Shanny's run Right..

I don't see why that would allow us to draft a tight end low, mostly because those guys probably aren't any good. No matter who we have on the roster we're going to need a superior TE.

I think this allows them to not HAVE to draft a tight end if their targets aren't on the board.

Good size and speed. not so good everywhere else. Evan Moore?

Ya, Farmer did the same thing last year ... filling holes before the draft so that if the right guy isn't available at the right time, you don't have to make a desperation pick.

the TE class in this draft isn't all that special. besides williams there is no real 'golden ticket' to punch. i like the signing for the reasons stated above.

draft for real need. if we can get by with these guys for a year without a huge drop off (i mean what was the TE production last year anyways?) there's always next year to draft a 'special' TE.

Yea, makes sense.

Farmer has shown that he hates taking pass catchers WR/TEs high. Picking up Bowe/Hartline may show that he will skip WR in round one despite all the mock drafts.

i mean....if Vince Lombardi was right, that the game is won and lost in the trenches, expect to see OL, DL taken high. not WR/TE/RBs.

I'm on board with that. I may be one of the few, but I don't want to see a receiver in the first

Kinda depends on the WR... and who else is on the board.

I definitely do not want to see a TE in the first...

Sure, if it falls in your lap then it falls in your lap. Cooper and White are the only two I would even consider in the first, but they won't be there. Williams looks like the best TE, and I wouldn't touch him till mid to late second

Just occurred to me that Mr. Dray might have had something to do with this recruitment...

Connect rate was decent in 2012 and 2013 at around 75% of targets.

Drop rate was 0.0 in 2014, 7.0 in 2013, 7.4 in 2012, but 19.2 in 2011... so there was improvement.

At 238 lb he's going to have issue with even smaller DEs on the line, but with a head of steam as an F-back??? Maybe...

Like miss the hieden and Shaw days. They were Somewate realable

You mean Aaron Shea?

Ya those guys were OK as was Evan Moore, looks like we might have a three-headed monster of 6'5 guys who catch and block and won't make a lot of mistakes, but aren't game changers. Nothing wrong with that if we can run the ball the wideouts are making plays.

Too bad the criteria isn't like it used to be with the ladies. If you can find a hottie without any beers in the gut - giddyup and get after it. Now, if you need at least 12 beers to make something look attractive - you better hope your competition is the one power gluing that at the end of the night. Your buddy Flugel used to call that 12 pack love back in BC (Before Cellphones). Since 99, our front office has brought in a lot of the football version of 12 pack love.

Jim Dray was a pleasant surprise in the hands department. However, in a world of yards after the catch - that poor guy looked like he was stranded in park on a busy highway.

I'm pretty happy about our FA WRs and what Hawkins can do out of the slot. That should help us get a little more balance from the passing game. I'd still like us to add the dynamic of 1 acceleration gear on the perimeter to help get our other Receivers more favorable matchups. Like I heard about Bowe in 2014, he could have done better on a team that had talented speed lining up on the other side of formation rather than being the guy drawing the most attention. We have enough draft picks where we could set him free from what he was sentenced to in 2014. As a Danny Shelton fan, I'm excited it doesn't even have to be as early as pick #12.
