OldBrownsFan
"President Trump handed a bill to German Chancellor Angela Merkel for about $400 billion -- money he claims Germany owes NATO -- during their White House meeting earlier this month, according to a British newspaper. Trump's colorful move was described as “outrageous” by a German minister." Clevfan4life
I think that's a made up story obf, to make Trump look like an asshole. ANd if memory serves right Germany was not one of the countries that Trump thought were delinquent...infact Germany contributes the second most amt of money to NATO behind the U.S. I thik Germany contributes 14 percent and the U.S 22 percent. It was reported from the Times in London (and multiple sources actually) but who knows? The WH denies it. Donald Trump 'printed out fake £300bn Nato invoice and handed it to Angela Merkel' President estimated Germany’s underspend on alliance over the past 12 years, then added interest http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/donald-trump-angela-merkel-nato-bill-defence-ignore-usa-germany-spending-a7650636.html

I don't think it is true. And from what i've read 300B is a joke, Merkel woudl have flown home if he gave her that. Westside Steve
So all these years after World War II is there anyone here he thinks the United States should pay the price to defend anybody around the globe? And if you do, or just say so to be an asshole, how about the Germans send us some beer or sausages? Maybe some oil from the Iraqis? Why not? Then comes Germany (14.5%), France (11%) and UK (10.5%)." https://www.quora.com/Why-should-the-US-continue-to-supply-73-of-NATO-funds-Shouldnt-Germany-step-in-and-spend-more
Clevfan4life
i guess the issue some people are taking is that even though Germany is the 2nd largest contributor to NATO, some countries spend a higher % of their GDP. But Germany spending a few % of their GDP is still a much larger contribution than if like Greece spent 80% of their GDP. So if the agreement is a certain % of GDP and Germany isn't paying that than there's a discussion to be had.....but Germany is still paying large amounts that can't be overlooked. DieHardBrownsFan
+6 Data has revealed the NATO countries not spending enough on defence to warrant Donald Trump using US forces to protect them from an attack +6 The alliance has set a target for its members of spending 2 per cent of GDP on defence - but the likes of France, Germany and Canada are among more than 20 members not meeting the objective, figures show Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3934266/Sorry-France-Germany-Canada-NATO-countries-not-spending-defence-warrant-Trump-using-forces-protect-attack.html#ixzz4cdA6Dfkw Follow us: @MailOnline on Twitter | DailyMail on Facebook
Clevfan4life
Right so we're back to the % of gdp argument....and thats valid if germany and others arent meeting that. But the fact still remains that germany is 2nd only to the U.S in total contribution to NATO. So they cant be that far removed from the gdp target if they contribute 14% to the U.S's 22%. So trump handing merkel a 300b invoice seems a bit overbthe top and uneccessary to one of our best friends in europe that we dont want to see realign with russia
