Soju
its obviously totally turned this team around and the run game. It makes so much more sense, ZB allows for more time for blocks to develop and to open up and creates tons of creases.
jrb12711
This is a very valid question. I think for a zone blocking scheme to be effective, the most important thing is to have smart, athletic lineman. I suppose that's harder to have than it seems, but I wouldn't doubt it becomes more common place in the NFL.

calfoxwc
However, the holes and creases are there. The new rb's add dynamite to the spark. The Browns got BLOCKING ! Only the last two coaching regimes with the Browns, had the smarts to try to fix the offensive line. Bitonio is a brilliant and excellent addition to the oline. hx214
Could be the blocking, but it could be the fact that Old Man Willis was the starting running back last year.... then Rainey for a day, then Fozzy, then Baker, then the fan in seat 71 row 5 section 105, then Oby. EightyEight
Zone blocking generally suits teams with smaller more athletic linemen, so if you have bigger guys, man to man is generally used. Hope that helps somewhat.

TypicalBrowns
o line is opening creases but the RBS are able to see the creases and move quickly downfield but also laterally. Both West and Crowell do this well (Crowell arguably does it better and faster but is a little raw)T RICH had a good line but couldn't see the holes develop, nor get to them fast enough to get in space, while also having the ability to break tackles (t rich was just to fragile)LOVE that the run game is actually a threat now, that wins us many more games being able to run the ball. Osiris
It's a matter of matching the right running backs with the right offensive linemen, so everyone can't do it unless they have the right players. Zone blocking requires patient one-cut runners the likes of what you see with Marshawn Lynch and what the Browns are successfully replicating with Tate, West, and Crowell. You then have to pair them, as mentioned above, with the smaller, quicker linemen. You don't need big maulers in a zone-blocking scheme because you aren't asking the linemen to road-grade the opponent, you're asking them to use their own force against them by pushing them in the direction they want to go. It's the football equivalent of Jujitsu.

Clevfan4life
what kind of blocking did we have under Mangini? I remember the o line coach during his tenure was the guy that built that ridiculous Cowboys line when Jimmy Johnson was there. That line could fucking run block. THey didn't get enough credit for Hillis's success.

Tour2ma
It's the football equivalent of Jujitsu. Hopefully minus the grabbing of the "uniform"... ... a but good analogy. THey didn't get enough credit for Hillis's success. You talking about George Warhop? Brian Dabol was Mangini's OC and we ran the Erhardt-Perkins scheme. Traditional smash mouth system used among others by Parcels who begat Belichick who begat Mangini....
Manzier
I don't know about all that... Hillis put up 1177 yards 3 seasons ago yeah but not really. That was a one season wonder. For 3 decades we were solid. Brown, Kelly, the Pruitts, Mack & Byner carried us for 30 years. Then nothing. With this kind of history, Hillis having 1 decent year doesnt rank as a running game. With the regime change from Mangini to Shurm, personnel changed and offensive scheme changed. Noteably we got rid of Vickers among other o line changes. Obviously the o line coach under mangin left which hurt big time. Hillis imo would have had more than 1 good year if the system were kept. That's the price of constant coaching turnover. I guarantee any glimmers of hope we see in the run game this year would be negated if Haslam for some reason decided to hit the reset button next year. Than people would be saying Crowell and West weren't shit cause they didn't do it the next year. We have to stay with this now.

Zombo
not so sure...Rainey did not do anything against the Falcons tonight..nothing and had two fumbles You could combine every running back that played for us last year and you wouldn't have a RB as good as our third stringer this year. Zombo --props to Baker and Oby for effort ... but jeezoman we had nothing.
