A pair of young right-handers will face off in the second game of a three-game set between the Twins and the Indians.

After starting the season in Triple-A Rochester, Jose Berrios will get the nod for Minnesota, making his season debut. Twins manager Paul Molitor announced after Thursday's 7-6 win over the White Sox that Berrios will start on Saturday over Nick Tepesch, who seemed to be the likely candidate because he was on the 25-man roster.

"We've worked on a few things that some of our people have kind of designed to get him more consistent with his pitches," Molitor said of Berrios. "He's been putting a lot of work into doing that. We have a need here now. We've been fortunate with off-days and rainouts not to have to go too deep, as far as numbers, in our rotation. We're at the point now where we've got to make some decisions."

In his rookie season in 2016, Berrios struggled in 14 starts. He allowed 12 homers, struck out 49, walked 35 and posted an 8.02 ERA in 58 1/3 innings. The Twins had the right-hander focus on improving his command issues in the Minors this season, and results followed. In 39 2/3 innings at Rochester, the 22-year-old went 3-0 with a 1.13 ERA and tallied 39 strikeouts with only eight walks.

Second-year starter Mike Clevinger will pitch opposite of Berrios. The 25-year-old right-hander was called up from Triple-A Columbus last weekend to start in place of the injured Corey Kluber, who was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a lower back issue. In his first start of the season, Clevinger went 5 2/3 scoreless innings and only allowed one hit with five strikeouts against the Royals to earn the win.

"I'd say it's still just a balancing process, how much weight you're going to put into it," Clevinger said of his performance against the Royals. "Obviously, you like to see good results, but at the same time, you've got to stick to it, because you want to keep getting those good results. But, it's good to see."

Three things to know about this game

• In three starts against the Indians in 2016, Berrios went 1-2 with a 7.82 ERA and allowed 11 earned runs on 14 hits in 12 2/3 innings pitched. His only win against the Tribe came in a six-inning effort at Progressive Field on Aug. 1, where he allowed three runs on five hits with five strikeouts and no walks in a 12-5 victory.

• Last season, Clevinger went 3-3 and posted a 5.26 ERA across 10 starts and seven bullpen outings. In his 17 appearances, he recorded 50 strikeouts and issued 29 walks in 53 total innings. Two of those starts came against the Twins, both resulting in no-decisions. In those outings, he allowed three runs on nine hits while striking out eight and walking six in just over eight total innings of work.

• Indians outfielder Abraham Almonte did not play in the series opener on Friday, as he is day to day with a right shoulder injury that he suffered in Toronto. After he flew out to end the top of the second inning in Wednesday's game, he was slow down the first-base line and favored his right shoulder. Manager Terry Francona noted that he does not want to rush him back, but Almonte said that he thinks he will be able to play in Saturday's game.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Indians have given their position-player unit a bit of a face lift.

The club added infielder Erik Gonzalez and outfielder Daniel Robertson to the active roster. In corresponding moves, the team placed Brandon Guyer on the 10-day disabled list and designated utility player Michael Martinez for assignment.

Guyer is dealing with a left wrist injury, according to the team. Robertson is in the Indians' lineup for Sunday, batting seventh and playing right field.

Robertson, a non-roster invitee in spring training, appeared in only four games at Triple-A Columbus because of a left hamstring injury. He collected seven hits in 15 at-bats in those four contests.

Gonzalez was batting .269 (36-for-134) for the Clippers. He appeared in games at shortstop, second base, third base, left field and right field.

Looks like Francona pushed the right button moving Kipnis to lead off and Santana to the 5 hole. 3 homers between them

The Rays and Indians meet up for the first time this season, and the three-game series kicks off with a strong pitching matchup between Chris Archer and Carlos Carrasco.

Entering Sunday, Carrasco had the fifth-best ERA (1.86) in the Majors, having allowed just 10 runs over 48 1/3 innings.

The Indians' right-hander, whose 0.77 WHIP was tied with Boston's Chris Sale for the best mark in the game, has won three of his last four starts and pitched six or more innings in six consecutive outings.

The Rays have seen Archer elevate his game this season, especially during his last three starts, during which he has allowed just four runs and struck out 27 batters over 21 1/3 innings.

"[Archer] is in a good spot," Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "Go back to 2015 when he had that little run of five, six, seven starts, whatever it was. There's a lot of similarities right there. Maybe a tick better because he's in the zone more. If you look at Arch, he's commanding the fastball, he's proving early to lineups that he's able to throw that, and then it just opens up many other avenues to get people out later in the game."

Three things to know about this game

• Carrasco's 48 1/3 innings are the most in his career through the first seven starts. He averages 14 pitches per inning, down from 15.3 a year ago. Opponents have posted just a .177/.218/.311 slash line against Carrasco this year.

• Archer has gotten 6.75 runs per game of support through his first eight starts, more than two greater than in any of his prior seasons.

• Indians closer Cody Allen has gone 9-for-9 in save opportunities this season, and allowed just two runs over 13 2/3 innings. The right-hander, who has 101 career saves for Cleveland, has fanned 25 batters this season and has yet to surrender a homer......no jinx there right?
