Aside: FoxSports seems to get all the scoops anymore. Seems like every article including ESPN's includes the phrase "as first reported by (so-and-so) of FoxSports".

Sanchez in our QB mix is a possibility, but of more interest to me will be QB Coach choice. I wonder if Frank Cignetti, Jr. will emerge. Just surfaced as a possible OC candidate and has crossed coaching career paths with DeFillipo.

Flipper was taken? Too FLA-ish?

I'm hoping ZBS as well. It was just too good early with Mack at C to abandon. That said we had element of power scheme as well last year, both with and without Mack, and without Mack it worked better than the ZBS... at least wide.

I think we have to stay with it. Shanny did very well with it both here and in WAS. Hope it was the players and not just him

Crow definitely fits the "one-cut", ZBS-RB mold and the O-line took to it well. Schwartz struggled with it early, but by game 4 even he was passing assignments to Greco regularly.

Some more digging, and a some more dot connecting :

Analyst are saying this is a Home Run hire for the Browns.

I'm hearing DeFilippo likes the Power Running scheme, but he also worked with Knapp (a ZBS guy) . . . also his O has WCO similarities.
Passing wise it sounds confirmed that he's in the mold of Norv Turner going down the field.
He's getting a 3 Year Deal, so that's upper end length wise.

Now to see what he does with Assistants and type of Players he wants to work with.

Glenn Winston (RB) :

There was word going around that the Browns were actually looking at OC's before the Shanahan deal broke loose.

FO & Coaching staff have been high on this guy and talked him up last year, but never played him.

Winston is more suited to a Power Running game . . . wondering if he was held out for this foreseen Coaching/Offensive scheme change ?

Another yawner move by the Browns.."yawn"

We really don't know that yet. I'm sick of the Browns ending up with these old timers who never live up to their rep. Keep hiring the young blood. It all comes down to cohesion within the coaching staff and the willingness of the players to buy in...........

Official Site Article just came up :

http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/news/article-5/Browns-tap-John-DeFilippo-as-new-offensive-coordinator/5fec4d47-18ed-4bb2-adc4-c67bf7bf0c7b

From Pettine :

“The things John brings to the table are exactly what we were looking for. He's the total package,” Pettine said. “He's very bright. He has great energy about him, great passion. Loves the game. Works extremely well with other people. You could see that when I brought him in and had a chance to meet with not just the offensive staff, but he spent time with the defensive staff. That was a big part of it, making sure we weren't bringing in just a playbook; we were bringing in a good person. That, to me, is one of the biggest reasons why he's here.”

From DeFilippo :

DeFilippo interviewed for the same position last season. Pettine said it was a tough decision that ultimately came down to experience, but he had little doubt at the time DeFilippo was ready to call plays in the NFL.

“This isn't going to be my offense or ‘so and so's’ offense. This is going to be the Cleveland Browns' offense,” DeFilippo said. “Whatever that is to get our best players the football, it's going to be very flexible.

“We're not going to just scrap something just because I'm here. I don't have that type of ego. If something's good that our players do well and they know, we're going to keep doing it. That's going to be my job here the next few weeks is I'm going to really study our last 16 games of this season and see what we're good at, see where it fits and see where it meshes with myself and coach Pettine seeing this offense.”

.

.

.

At an offensive coordinator position that’s been in flux in recent years, DeFilippo said he hopes this is “the last change for these guys for a long time.”

“One of the things Mike and I talked about in our interview was if there's something these guys are familiar with in terms of a name, I don't need to change the name just because I see it as, for example, the play's called ‘smash’ and they call it ‘hammer.’ I can learn,” DeFilippo said. “Let one guy learn the new tag for it."

“We're going to make this offense, the transition as simple as we can for our players. I think they'll really like playing in this offense.”

If these hold out, I'm liking this Hire more and more.

Also heard and Interview with Derek Carr today on DeFilippo, said he's sharp, a hard worker, really helped him grow as a QB.

Carr also said if a Player doesn't like DeFilippo, then something's wrong with that Player - everyone on the Team (Raiders) really liked the guy.

Youngstown Dago. Nice.

Zombo

Potentially add his name to the list of damn good coaches from Youngstown. We can only hope.

edit: Let's hope this guy isn't as dumb as the current OC for the Raiders. Latavius Murray should have had a shit ton more carries than he ended with.

Yep! I'm also tired of the old, "This guy is a PROVEN so-so Coach". Go for the GUSTO & keep getting these young, energetic guys. Old guys like me (68) need to be FANS! (I'm still damn good at that).

I love what's happening with my Browns. We may still have some tough days ahead, but we no longer will settle for, and accept, mediocrity.

Mike

BTW, I'll call him FLIP....it fits & it's only one syllable (hell, I only have so many left! LOL)

Well fuck yeah. This makes me happier than anything else in the interview - it shows he's not some arrogant 'my way or the highway' kind of coach saying 'this play is called this in my system, learn it or gtfo'

The more I read about it, the more excited I am.

Hey I'm taking a positive reaction especially after looking over all the retreads available. You know, guys that have been out of football for a couple years, guys in their sixties etcetera. Might be nice to have a young guy with plenty of energy.

I really would like to see the Browns continue their commitment to the run. That always seems to allow the quarter back to have a little breathing room.
