THE BROWNS BOARD

This Week in the AFC North

Recommended Posts

Last week was a Great week for The Great Zomboni, as his prediction of Big Ben dropping early in the season behind the Steelers' weak offensive line came eerily true in Week 3. The Crystal Ball has always been spectacularly good at predicting AFC North results, but now it predicting who and when will get injured among AFC North teams ... soon it will probably be able to tell us which former Steeler lineman will next die an early death from roids, killed in police chase or crushed by wood.

What the hell ... I'm going with Craig Wolfley, horrific snow plow accident, December 2015.

Pittsburgh at Baltimore Thursday Night Football 8:25 PM

The Steeler offense was looking like warmed-over shit with Ben at the controls against the Rams, so expect some cold shit with Mike Vick running things. And the Steeler D will get raked by Flacco and co. in Baltimore with chip on their shoulder and an 0-3 monkey on their back. Baltimore was the pick with Ben ... back up the truck with Vick playing. RAVENS 34 STEELERS 10

Kansas City at Cincinnati 1:00 PM

The team that hasn't won in January since the Cold War ended, sure gets a lot of love in September from the pundits. Ok, so it is October now, time for that first wheel to get wobbly. Underrated Chiefs will bring the Bungles back to the crowd in the AFC. CHIEFS 27 BUNGLES 23

Cleveland at San Diego 4:05 PM

After missing 7 quarters with a concussion, and showing some rust in the first half last week, Josh McCown and the Browns receivers of no renown seemed to really be clicking in the second half last week. Benji has to be looking as a scary threat on film, which in the end, will open up running lanes for Isiah Crowell, who I expect to have his best game by far this week. On the other side of the ball, the Chargers are taking out Craigslist Ads in order to find a healthy offensive lineman, Browns front 7 should have some fun knocking Rivers around. BROWNS 30 CHARGERS 17

Putting tonite's Double-Dip pick early, then will reflect on the rest of the division a bit.

Week 3 Results ... Prev ... This .. YTD

Straight-up ........... 5-3 ..... 4-0 ... 9-3

Vs. the spread ..... 4-4 ..... 4-0 ... 8-4

Baltimore @ Pittsburgh (+2.5)

When was the last time PTG was a home dog? When was the last time Michael Vick was allowed near a dog?

Season to date BLT has been undistinguished. But they showed guts battling an improved Raider team after Week 2's trip to the coast. I think they packed some of that momentum and brought it back east where they gave Cinci all they wanted.

PTG has the best three-legged stool in the league. One leg was missing the first two-weeks and they found a substitute that was long enough to keep them from tipping over. Week three the missing starting-leg was back only to see the indispensable leg fall off when someone, inadvertently tripped and fell to the floor next to the stool. The replacement for the next six-weeks or so is an old, crooked stick. It's not even long enough to reach the floor.

Balancing on a two-legged stool is hard. Sooner or later it falls over. Take the sooner...

Prediction: BLT 24 PTG 14

Final: BLT 23 PTG 20 - WW/WW

Kansas City @ Cincinnati (-4.0)

Man I really wanted to see KC do well this year. I even picked them to win the AFCW. Not working out for me so far... even though they now have a TD pass to a WR. I don't see my pick looking any better after this week.

Cinci got a scare last week from a team that's not as good as KC. Opie threw a pick in that game and was sacked twice but did not rattle. So he's going to recover his roll, that plus the running game, a balanced Defense and home-field should be enough for them to see 4-0.

On deck for Cinci? Seattle... with BUF in the hole...

Prediction: Cinci 31 KC 24

Cleveland @ San Diego (-7.5)

First gonna pick 'em as I see 'em from now on. If I don't like us in a given week, so be it... but this ain't one of those weeks. I hate away games in the Pacific Time Zone. Always adds a degree of uncertainty, but 7.5 worth of uncertainty?

SD is middle of the pack in rushing (105 YPG) and 4th in passing. They've allowed a league-high 10 sacks. On D they are 4th worst in Rush D and 3rd best in Pass D. A classic can't-stop-the-run stat mix. Other thing they can't do? Sack the opponent's QB. They've only recorded 1 so far.

I know.. look in the mirror... right? I have, but even better I've looked at the tape. This is the week our running game begins to emerge. This is the Defense for it to show up against...

"And if we show up we gon' show out...

Smoother than a fresh jar of Skippy."

I think Crow flashes the 2014 form we all came to love.

I think Game Manager McCown answers the questions he left open in Week 3.

I think we control Gordon and pound Rivers.

I think we win and cover...

"Don't believe me just watch.."

Prediction: CLE 27 SD 17

And your winner of the dumb decision bowl... Mike Tomlin by a sternly set jaw.

But Harbaugh gave him a good run for his money.

Idk where else to post this (don't wanna start a new thread) but a big reason the game was close was an absolutely unacceptable missed holding call on Bell's TD. I don't often use the word egregious, but to miss that especially with how many cheap holding calls there have been is just baffling.

Ratbirds crying even after they won......sheesh......It was noted how they whined and cried about NE running a legal play(that they thought was illegal), then after all the bitching, they turn around and start running the same play....hahaha

Coupla Stooler notes....

1) That kicker injury just cost em a game.....(as predicted)

2) Antonio Browns record streak comes to a screeching halt the very first game BR doesnt play......kinda lends to the thought that your superstar WR's are only as good as the guy throwing the ball....

Scobee 200% cost us that game just as he cost us the game in new England week one. Vick didn't have the entire offense at his disposal and all week long it was said things were going to be kept simple. Brown had a tough catch and drop that cost himself the record which at the end of the day only the media seemed to get super excited about. Vick will have more of the offense and the playbook at his disposal next week. Rough damn game. I'm not used to having to cross the fingers each time we line up for a field goal.

Lol, should I also pull up the missed calls against the Ravens? Man what a bunch of fucking whiners in Baltimore. I guess they forgot they won the game.

There's missed calls and there's unacceptable missed calls. That egregious hold not being called led directly to a TD, that's a huge price to pay. Obviously it didn't outright change who won but with the way penalties are called that's just really, really bad.

Bell is a good runner but it certainly helps when the Ravens engage in some piss poor tackling....and about 3 holds on that play are not called.

This will be THE best game that Vick plays. He didn't commit a turnover I do not believe. In the future he will commit numerous turnovers. I mean, that is simply his history and a tiger doesn't change his stripes.

So you're saying picking up a defender and body slamming him to the ground is holding?

Vagidude... Vick is done. Took sacks he never would have taken in his prime. Mechanics are weak. More of the offense just will mean more of the same. And without a functioning QB Brown's impact is diminished. But you had to love Michael Irvin's explanation of the tough drop... the reverse spin of a left-handed throw. Your offensive bright spot was Bell warming up after thinking every play in the first half was a one-man reverse. A couple of those 2nd-half runs were magical... just not enough of them.

Defensively? You are what I said you were... diminished. Your D brought Forsett out of a 3-game coma... allowed catches by 8 different Ravens led by Aiken??? Had Flacco not mentally spent the night in the Bahamas, it would have been a slaughter. I think he was worried about some property he owns there...

Face it... you're not going to be outscoring anybody for a few weeks and that was the "New Steeler" road map.

At least Scobee only cost you a 6th...

Here it is guys: These are NOT your big brother's Steelers and Ravens. These are not the big bad defenses that these teams had in years past:

These were two decidedly below average to bad football teams. At least as they are constituted now.

The Ravens have a worse receiving corps than the Browns....even WITH Steve Smith.

And that bad WR corps was going up against a bad secondary.

Nether of these defenses seem to me to be in the top half of defenses in the league.

In watching this game it seemed to me that both teams played slow...and certainly played sloppily.

Joe Flacco turned back into Joe Fluko except for one good play in the drive to tie the game.

I think the Steeler's scored 17 of their 20 points on Flacco turnovers in his own territory.

Only his rumblin' bumblin, stumblin gave the Steelers the chance to be in this game.

Vick actually played better than I thought he would.....and better than I think he will play in the future.

There was nothing very impressive about either team's lines Offensive or defensive. Oh, a few good plays.

Then of course there was the play calling by Pittsburgh. Were Tomlin and Haley inspired by Pete Carroll's Super Bowl calls?

And poor play calling combined with piss poor execution?

And Pittsburgh's kicker? No one can blame the coaches for going for it twice on fourth down in FG territory. (you can blame them for what they did with those opportunities)

Were injuries a factor in Pittsburgh loss? Certainly. Yes, with BR in their they likely win...against this bad Baltimore team.

The thing is: these two teams are NOT very good. And the Browns should take advantage of this....as I think talent wise they are overall much better than these teams. (their QBs being the main difference). The problem is that the Browns are so discombobulated in their coaching issues that they seemingly can't take advantage of the fact that these teams are down.....and that could/should be embarassing.

Nice run by Bell for that TD- aided by a takedown of a Ravens player. I'll give Vag this much- Bell is an elite RB.

Scoobie-Doo cost them the game- I loved it. Time for the Steelers to have an "all are welcome to try out" kicking competition. Too bad they couldn't have dragged out the game to a 20-20 tie.

Vick with that whined up won't last long either. Yanda is a bear. Browns RB's could learn something about being patience till hole is created by both teams in this one. Casey Spears Shitsburg is on line one.(Tomlin u ass. u give 10 year kicker's a shot or 3 HaHa.) Glad not going into Baltimore next week with them 0-4. Smitty "ice up boy" and Campinario may both be out. Time to shine Browns Defense. May the real Andy Dalton please stand up, please show up. Go Browns!!

Yep, all I'm saying is that call HAS to be made and the refs need to be chided for missing it. For the literal record number of flags thrown so far stuff like that can't be missed especially when it has such a huge impact on the game.

If by elite you mean he is in the top 5-8 RBs in the league, sure.

Vag says that he is "generational". As far as I am concerned there have been only about 5-6 "generational RBs" in history: Jim Brown, OJ Simpson, Walter Payton, Barry Sanders, Eric Dickerson, Emmit Smith....and maybe Adrian Peterson.

Do you want to put Bell in that group with them the way Vag does?

What the Steelers are experiencing is what it feels to be like to be a Browns fan and have your QBs floundering around.

Yanda is a bear.

Laughed when I saw the Steelers (Bell and Brown?) looking at him during the OT coin toss. They not only looked tiny in comparison, but had this "glad you don't play defense" look on their faces.

Vick had one day of practice because of the short week. Teams get a day off, film, study, game plan and practice. He now has more time to prepare for week two as the starter. Brown dropped a touchdown in the end zone and he's he took a couple sacks but I was more than pleased with Vick. It was our kicker that let us down and then maybe Tomlin for not giving him a third chance and a couple of those 4th down calls. Vick was NOT the reason we lost that game.
