I really am getting tired of those schools always being able to recruit region wide and pull the best players.

I know that last year the OHSAA was thisclose to changing the whole system to bifurcating public and parochial schools. I think it may end up happening at some point.

One thing that could kick start it is if one of the ranking entities, like the AP, or Ohio.com would rank these schools in separate categories.

Recruiting??

If there is any proof of recruiting in ohio by any of the teams listed in the top 10 then please show it.

Seperating the teams anymore than they already are would simply be belittling the communities who 'really' do want to compete against the best.

I really don't think having a 'juice box' division is good for ohio highschool football.

Are you an ostrich? Or is that another orifice in which your head is stuck?

In essence I agree that bifurcating is not a good idea....but the fact is some schools play by different rules. So the theory is to allow equals to play equals.

I guess because you say so it's true?

the idea of competition is to be the best you play the best.

the divisions are split up to allow all schools to be competitive. now if you were to say the better kids go to the better programs you would be correct.

but if your your labeling programs stated as illegal recruiters, give us some proof.

Are you truly this naive? Or obtuse?

The likes of St. Ig or St. Ed. etc. can get players from anywhere in the Cleveland/NEO area. Can Lakewood HS do that? Can Hudson/Stow/Medina/Wadsworth? No, they cannot.

It is one thing to say "we want to play the best". The problem is they are not playing on a level playing field.

If St. Ed could ONLY get players who lived in Lakewood, or if Iggy could only get players that live in the near west side of Cleveland, then it would be level.

Sometimes the bigger inner city school districts can try to even up the score by "directing" certain players to certain schools within the school district. Glenville may in fact be able to get players from anywhere in the Cleveland city school district, because that school can "offer a class" that is only being given at a particular school.

I know Akron City schools used to do this (not sure if they still do): Any real good football players would be sent to Garfield because only they offered...I don't know...auto shop...or some such. The good basketball players would be sent from around the city to Akron Central Hower. The good swimmers to Firestone.

But a suburban school does not have that ability. Kids from Solon go to Solon. Kids from Cuyahoga Falls go to Cuyahoga Falls.

(That is...unless they decide to go to parochial school). Randy Lerner lived in Shaker Hts., yet his kid went to play football on the west side.).

Yea, sure. Parochial schools don't recruit....and SEC schools don't play players.

Wow, your hell bent on disparaging these programs. You've gone from a recruiting argument to now a scholarship issue, all without providing proof or facts.

Good Luck to the Grizzlies this season.

Hello! McFly, is anybody home. The scholarship offer..while normally innocuous...is made when the kid is approached about playing for those schools.

Oh, I am sure now that a school's 'reputation' as a football/basketball/wrestling etc. powerhouse attracts some kids all on its own....because they have seen in the past that Iggy or whoever has won state titles....and has put kids into D-1 programs and even into the pros (Hellow Brian Hoyer). But that is only half of it.

It was a great day when the Wadsworth Wrestling team wrestled the State Championship from St. Eds etc. and did it just by drawing kids from inside the school districts boundaries. Unlike Eds which can draw kids from a vast geographic area that can cover all of Cuyahoga County and beyond.

My nephew went to St.V/St.M and graduated the same year as LeBron. My nephew is a Catholic kid that lived in/near central Akron and going to St. V was a natural fit for him because he want to Catholic schools since kindergarten

LeBron was a public school kid slated to go to Kenmore HS....but he didn't go there because St. V got a hold of him early in junior high years.

And, FYI, your argument isn't with me, it is with the OHSAA...sorta. There was a move to divide the tournaments into public and private...but, yea, no one really wanted that...but they have come up with a formula to try to even the playing field a bit.

A private school could be escalated into a much higher division. E.g.. a St.V/M, which is actually pretty small (only 116 students in my nephews/LeBrons class) would normally play say at division III....could be jumped up to even D-1.

Gipper, while I normally enjoy your posts, this topic is not your strong suit. Nor mine.

You have a predetermined stance on public vs. privates So whether you want to enhance your posts with quips such as 'hello, mc fly' or the ostrich approach, you still don't present any facts or proof of any illegal recruiting or scholarships for athletics.

OHSAA doesn't wan't to lose the revenue by separating the privates, its a slippery slope and the publics would surely be on the wrong side if it came to not having OHSAA in charge of ALL highschool athletics. A super league of parochials would have zero need to even be affiliated with OHSAA therefor allowing the so called recruiting at will.

The current format for divisions and playoffs was restructured this year. No matter though the public schools still win the higher % of all state championships across the board for highschool athletics.

Just because I can't see the dead rats body doesn't mean I can't smell the stench.

Will they? Look at this chart:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Ohio_High_School_Athletic_Association_championships#Past_Team_State_Champions

Since the mid-70s Wadsworth is the ONLY public school to win a big school wrestling title in 40 years. I seems more like a 70-30 split with most sports over the last half century practically in favor of private schools.

First of all to address the question "Can Mentor be revelent this season?" ... Relevant? They were just picked #1 by Cleveland.com, I've seen them ranked #4 in Ohio in one poll and #5 in another. I've even seen a listing as anywhere from #14 to #54 in the Country. I think they will be very much relevant and we will find out pretty early with them playing McDowell in week #1 and Iggy in week #2.

The WR (Conner Krizancic a Cincinnati recruit) who is stepping up to play QB this season after the departure of Trubisky to North Carolina, is a hell of an athlete. He was Mentors guard last year on Mentor's State Champion basketball team (his father was the coach). He's a player, I'm looking forward to watching him ball.

If you listen to Mentor's coach talk, it's all about how under-sized Mentor was last season and how much weight-lifting has bulked up both lines on a team that is returning (16) Starters. They will field an experience defense this season that will shoulder much more than what Trubisky had to over-come last year. Also 6'-4" WR Brandon Fritts (another North Carolina recruit) will still be a handful for opponents to harness.

If Coach Triv is speaking with confidence about the upcoming season, I'm backing him. The guy has done a tremendous job at Mentor and no one can count them out until they are out. They got killed by Ignatius in week #3 last season and did nothing but get better and better and better until they peaked in the playoffs. 16 of them boys are picking up where they left off, it's Iggy (who has taken on some injuries already and are fielding new players at QB & RB) that may have to prove they are relevant.

I'd like to see Glenville take down St. Ed's in the opener. The 'ville has Ed's in week #1 and an improved Solon team in week #2 ... great scheduling to stay in-state and play those two powerhouses.

Now to address the recruiting aspect. You are damn right they recruit, they (Ed's & Iggy) recruit, they hand out Scholarships for crying out loud. I have friends who's kids play for those programs and the schools contacted them with offers, not vice-versa. How about when Iggy was to have an off-year a few years back until they flew in the best player from Colorado to QB their team? They won a State Championship behind the kid in a year that had no business being there. Hell, Glenville had a pipeline of kids from the Atlanta area who wanted to play for OSU and came to Glenville for their pipeline to Tressel.

With that said, we Mentorites like the competition. It is what it is until the rules ever get changed. I like the public school underdogs, puts a chip on their shoulders to route them gravy spoon-fed fags at the all-boy schools.

Can't wait for Friday Night!

I know Mentor will be good, losing Trubisky is a huge hole to fill. His games against Ed's and Iggy were the best back to back games Ohio has ever seen in my opinion.

Glenville should be pumped to have Ginn back on the sidelines. Solon is gonna need help to stay close in the Glenville game.

Toledo has churned out some strong teams also, would be nice to see them travel a little further East.

Its hard not to be jealous of some of the better programs, but they still have to work hard also.

(who has Mentor at #14 nationally??)

Uhm, where can you find the rankings. I have been trying to do a search but can't seem to come up with it.

National rankings are Rivals, Maxpreps, the PD has a local teams ranking.

There are forum rankings like JJHuddle, JoeEitle and Dan Pastarini(sp)

USA Today I think also has a national ranking, the only thing in common is that they all have a different top 10.....

The PD rankings are the only I can find that have Mentor #1.

Doesn't the AP have a high school ranking? They always used to. I did search it but didn't find it. Did they give it up and just let the computer rankings serve?

Mentor fumbled the ball into the endzone for a safety to dig themselves in an 0-9 deficit. McDowell eventually increased their lead to 16-0 before the Cardinals woke and began the season. Mentor started the game with converted WR (Krizancic) at QB, but made a switch after the first Qtr to go with Sophomore (Eiswerth) and he passed for 5-TD's, the last couple to Krizancic at WR as Mentor prevailed 44-30 in a game that had several lead changes. After Mentor was down 16-0, they went on a 23-0 run to take the lead, but McDowell netted things up 23-23 at the half. ... Looks like Mentor has their QB now ... game on next week Iggy!

I think Mentor is over rated.

I can see where you might think that, I mean they did knock off probably the two best teams in the State last season in St. Ed's and St. Iggy back-to-back before running out of steam in the final 4. I mean, there has to be about a whole 5-6 better teams in the State this year, why would anyone talk about Mentor?

McDowell is a top-20 team in PA, and Mentor spotted them 16 and beat them by two TD's. Bring on Berea!

Ha ha. Seriously, they looked really good. I root for all the NE Ohio teams. Unfortunately, my HS team the Valley Forge Patriots sucks I'm sure.

Mentor vs Iggy should determine the #2 ranked team locally.

Mentor has huge momentum going into this game after great performance against McDowell.

St. Ed's has a few easy games the next 2 weeks. Look for St. Edwards to pull away in the standings if the stay undefeated once their schedule toughens up.

After Igggy, Mentors schedule is pretty easy.

Glenville should win out also.

Mentor sucked last Friday ... haven't seen the offense that off in a very long time. They have a lot of holes to fill. I wouldn't count them among the elite until re-evaluated at the end of the season. Coach Triv will fix all, but will it be to any advantage this season? NOTE: They looked just as bad last season in Week #3 verse Iggy and came back strong for the playoff run. I wouldn't count them out, just not count them in over the next 6+ weeks.

  • 2 weeks later...

Colerain has impressed enough to get the #1 state ranking for the AP rankings

St. Edwards has climbed to a #6 national ranking #2 state in AP ranking

St. Iggy looks to have rebounded from there first loss to Brother Rice

Mentor is on cruise control for the remainder of there creampuffs

Glenville needs to stay sharp through the remainder of there creampuffs

Moeller and St. X are gonna be there in the playoffs

Toledo powerhouses seem to have regressed just a little.

There is a considerable drop off from D1 to the rest of the Divisions.(as there should be)
