The Cleveland Browns have claimed DB Tyvis Powell via waivers from Seattle.

Powell is 6-2, 211 pounds and is entering his second NFL season out of Ohio State. Originally signed by Seattle as an undrafted free agent last year, Powell spent the entire regular season on the Seahawks active roster and appeared in eight games. He logged three special-teams tackles. He appeared in 42 games with the Buckeyes and led the team in interceptions during his final season. Powell is a native of Bedford, Ohio.

I remember Powell contributing to our last Nat Champ, but at Safety. Solid kid who should have stayed in school for his SR. year.

Could be our new SS/LB hybrid candidate.

Big Nickel prospect with good size and instincts, solid hands. His combine stats never translated to being an elite athlete at the spot. His range isnt very great so I doubt you'll see him back on a hash. Special teams demon at tOSU.

Nice to see our Buckeyes come home.

Good synopsis. I really also like the fact he got a rookie season with arguably the top DB unit in football and made a marked impression. I'd argue if Powell would have stayed at OSU for another season he would have been a firm 3-5 round pick, going out early cost him (literally). From everything I'm reading it seems like the Seahawks thought they could "hide" Powell and scoop him back up, which bodes well for his ability.

Nice little article... really liked this opening chunk:

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Know your hilarious friend, the one who's always laughing and cracking jokes, the guy you invite to watch the game because he knows what's up and he'll make sure everyone has a good time?

That guy plays for the Browns now.

Tyvis Powell loves everything, but there are few things he loves as much as he loves the Browns. One of the most infectious personalities I've ever met in sports is the newest member of the Cleveland secondary, and, by the way, I think he can play.

THERE'S A GOD!!! #BlessedByTheBest #ClevelandMadeClevelandPaid

Released by Seattle at the end of his rookie year after starting for three seasons at Ohio State, Powell now plays for the team that every year he used to predict would go 16-0.

Again, he really loves the Browns.

Told you you'd be str8!! S/o to the Soul of Cleveland @1Tyvis on the pick up!

"Don't get me wrong," Sean Williams, the Bedford High School football coach and Powell's mentor, said Monday, "he loved Seattle. But he was so mad, I think hurt, when the Browns didn't pick him up in the sixth or seventh round, now to come back home and be part of fixing and repairing this whole thing, you can believe how excited he is."

If Powell can't play he won't stay, but at the NFL Combine in 2016, Powell tested well and proved to be more athletic than I realized. At Ohio State's Pro Day, to my eye, he looked as fluid as future first-rounder Eli Apple. And then he went undrafted.

Teams called to express free agent interest and he picked Seattle, hoping to be mentored by Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas. He was, with the Seahawks even moving the 6-foot-3 lifetime safety to corner, though he only saw game action on special teams. But Seattle, apparently, got infected by Powell as well. Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times called Powell, "a player many in the front office fell in love with the day he signed."

Bodes well that he was moved from S to CB. Seattle does not do that lightly. Had a friend they did that with back in the day and now he has a Superbowl ring. Superb all-around athlete and that makes me think that Powell must be so as well.

Why would Seattle cut him them? It doesn't seem like a Justin Gilbert situation where the guy is devoid of talent...or desire to play.

May have more to do with their search for a replacement for Browner who was rejoining SEA in 2016.

http://www.seattletimes.com/sports/seahawks/why-did-the-seahawk-waive-tyvis-powell-to-make-room-for-devin-hester-heres-why/

"So why did the Seahawks waive Powell now if they kept him on the roster all season in large part because they wanted to keep him around for the future?

A couple things happened along the way.

One, after the injury to Earl Thomas, Seattle brought back Jeron Johnson, a Seahawk from 2011-14 who immediately moved into a role as a backup strong safety to Kam Chancellor with Kelcie McCray who had been the backup strong safety moving to backup free safety behind Steven Terrell, who was now the starter in place of Thomas.

With the Seahawks still harboring legitimate Super Bowl hopes, the team preferred the experience and reliability of Johnson at that position as opposed to an untested player such as Powell.

The team is also keeping five cornerbacks, the fifth of whom is DeAndre Elliott, who has emerged as an immediate special teams contributor Elliott has played 191 special teams snaps, seventh on the team, while Powell had played 104. Powell, though, had been inactive the last four weeks and six of the last eight while Elliott has played in each of the last eight games and has even snuck in 29 defensive snaps (Powell never played a down on defense).

Basically, that made Powell the 10th defensive back, when the Seahawks have often kept just nine. That was a luxury the team was willing to live with for most of the season.

But a couple other things then happened this week.

One, defensive tackle Tony McDaniel suffered a concussion Sunday something the media/public didnt know about until Wednesday and will not be able to play against the Lions Saturday.

That means that John Jenkins, a backup defensive tackle who has only played twice since being claimed by Seattle off waivers from New Orleans in November, may suddenly be needed in a depth role. With McDaniel out, Jenkins who maybe could have been deemed expendable becomes essentially the third defensive tackle behind Jarran Reed and Ahtyba Rubin and seems likely to be active against the Lions.

Another player the Seahawks could have also considered waiving instead of Powell running back Terrence Magee they basically couldnt.

Magee was signed off Clevelands practice on Dec. 20 to add depth at running back, a move the team made the week after Seattle had placed Troymaine Pope on Injured Reserve.

Players signed off another teams practice squad, though, have to be on the 53-man roster for three weeks or the team loses the roster spot in other words, Seattle could have waived Magee, but they couldnt have filled his spot and would have had only 52 players for this week. Once a team is in the playoffs and a Super Bowl a legitimate possibility, the present tends to take precedence over the future.

And with Thomas Rawls nursing a sore shoulder suffered against the Cardinals on Dec. 24 hes been deemed healthy but the team has no choice but to hedge its bets somewhat and C.J. Prosise still not back, Seattle needs the depth at tailback, anyway.

All of that led to the Seahawks reluctantly deciding to waive Powell."

The guy must not have impressed Williams at all.

We now have a roster spot open. Maybe for a receiver? Decker, anybody?

For the record,we once again have the highest paid OL as a group of 7 under contract. Highest Paid Guard group of 7 on team. 2nd highest paid long snapper. 7th in paid CB's with 11 . Rank 8th in both paying LT & Punter. Here's some more of the oddities? Rank 31st paying 5 TE's. Rank 30th paying 9 Safety's.(FS 24th,SS 23rd),Rank 28th in both paying 2 RT's & paying 6 DT's. WR's we rank 27th paying 11. Total DL of 13 & 5 Rb's both rank 25th..Yep, it's still early with mandatory camp this Tuesday. Somebody is coming on board.

......... HIGHEST PAID OL ONCE AGAIN.............

That is interesting, considering how bad our line was last year and we only added 1 top flight player.....we'll see if the money is well spent....

Ive been bitching about our lack of signing ANY quality FA's...until the one guy we tapped this year.....but all the others we've signed have been very underwhelming and, in a few cases, seemingly way over paid.......

So...while we have barely signed anybody, the few that we have signed dont seem to be great pick ups OR bargains.....

Here's hoping Britt and Zeitler are worth it.......(cause we sure know last years star FA...Davis....wasnt)
