THE BROWNS BOARD

Regression = Depression

PITTSBURGH -- During the Browns' embarrassing 30-9 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, I was receiving emails like this from Jim Mullen:

"With the Browns committing penalty after penalty ... sometimes, two on the same play ... the game is impossible to watch."

I was thinking the same thing.

Mullen added: "Hate to say it, but the coaching is terrible and the execution on the field is ever worse."

That's because games like this are killing the fan base. Browns fans are emotional. They are frustrated. They are angry. They are sometimes a bit irrational.

But they also know what bad football looks like, and they have been seeing it for weeks this season.

They saw the Browns commit two penalties on the same play ... twice. For the game, the Browns were penalized 12 times for 188 yards.

Eric Mangini would probably have his team running down the turnpike back to Cleveland after a performance like that. The former coach had a mania about penalties. Mangini had weaknesses, but his teams were disciplined and usually among the league leaders in fewest penalties.

Not this group. Not this year. And I wish Mike Pettine sounded as if it bothered him more. This is the fourth time in 10 games that the Browns have had at least 11 penalties in a game.

Pettine talked about his team making "simple mistakes ... mental errors."

Some of this is a reflection on the coaching staff.

NO CHANGE FOR NOW

After the game, owner Jimmy Haslam told some media members there would not be any changes in the bye week.

He said, "No change."

This is the sixth time in 10 games that the Browns have allowed at least 30 points. That's right, six games of at least 30 points from a defense that was supposed to be the strength of this team. The Steelers were on the Browns 2 and took two quarterback kneeldowns to end the game.

In other words, the score could have been even more lopsided. Just as the Bengals probably could have had even a wider margin than their 31-10 victory in the previous game.

So they have been spanked, 61-19, in their last two games by AFC North opponents.

As Alexander Goodlive emailed: "You see the team we're playing? The team that actually knows how to draft players, make adjustments and not make stupid errors all the time? How is it you can't do that?"

IT'S GETTING WORSE

The fact that the team schooling the Browns once again was the Steelers makes it even more painful. The 2-8 Browns have lost five in a row. In that span, they have been outscored, 145-68.

It's ridiculous and it really has been getting worse each week. I really believe the players are giving a physical effort. But there are so many mental mistakes. There is a sense of hopelessness hanging over the team.

A man named Tim wrote: "It stinks being a Browns fan. My pastor is a Bengals fan. Can't say that I blame him."

IT'S NOT JUST JOHNNY

Johnny Manziel finished the day with good-looking stats (33-of-45 for 372 yards), but the Browns reached the end zone only once. This isn't about blaming Manziel. He was far from the worst player in an orange helmet.

The Browns just appeared so disorganized at times. The Browns were inside the Pittsburgh 1 with a first down. Then came a holding penalty. A sack. An illegal formation penalty. An interception.

Later in the game, they finally did score a touchdown -- and then missed the extra point. It was a complete mess.

Pettine called this game a "big step forward" for Manziel, and that seems to be correct. The quarterback remained reasonably poised and tried to make some plays.

But Pittsburgh had a 21-3 lead at the half. The Steelers played some soft pass coverage, especially when out in front. That led to a lot of yards and completions, but not many points.

The Browns have now lost 13 of 15 dating back to last season.

Pettine called this game a "disappointing result."

I call it a regression and it's leading to major fan depression.

maybe the fans need to wake up and start spending their hard earned money on something they enjoy. If they are enjoying this crap not just this yr, but yr. after yr after yr after yr, something is seriously wrong with these folks. WAKE UP PEOPLE....

Year after year after year. Fans don't have to buy tickets. Stay home and enjoy your family.

Honestly.....I don't buy tickets. I have only been to a half dozen games in the last 15 years.

So I guess you can say it starts with me.

And though I have some around the house, the last two pieces of Browns paraphenalia I got were the free T-shirts given out at the tailgates.

And hell, you know what else I did? This past week I was traveling in Texas. I needed gas, and go off an exit to buy it. Instead of going to the Pilot, I went to a Sunoco station to get gas, even though I have a Pilot loyalty card. (the price for gas was about the same at both.)

So....how is that?

The Browns are playing sloppy, not executing and at times seem disinterested. This is the beginning of the end for Pettine. Until I saw that flaming turd yesterday I was in favor of giving Pettine one more year to see if he would be able to learn from his mistakes and adjust accordingly.

I felt this way for reasons:

1. Who else would we get to coach besides another Rookie who would have to learn on the job, rendering much of the same mistakes we see from Pettine.

2. I'm tired of hitting the reset button every year. So many years have been thrown in the trash choruses of "It's a new regime, be patient" and "they need to get their guys in there before we can judge"

Unfortunately, it's time to face facts. Cleveland is going in the wrong direction due to the coaching staff losing the locker room. The true kiss of death is being the coach of players who obviously aren't prepared or willing to play winning football.

There are obviously personnel issues with this team, but they aren't nearly as bad as the play on the field suggests. Next year the Browns will be paying 3 head coaches, and maybe the new guy will be a shurmur-esque turd as well, but there is hope in the unknown, there is no longer hope for this year or this coaching staff.

Lets offer John Gruden a huge contract. He love Johnny

Dude is one the highest paid people at ESPN to work 2 days a week plus some offseason draft shit. How much money would it take to give up that cushy gig and go back to working 100 hours a week during the season not to mention the stress that comes with it. The guy hasn't lost a game in years sitting up there in the booth and gets to spend the week at home with his family. Not sure there is enough money in the world to get him to leave ESPN.

Unfortunately I agree with you. But I'd sure like to see our players trying to earn Gruden Grinder helmet stickers every week. ;)

PS-JM should have gotten one just for persevering through his Exorcist imitation.

I think the fact that he turned down even talking with Notre Dame before they hired Kelly tells you all you need to know about his desire to get back on the sidelines.

Whoever wrote that needs to figure out a way to start a sentence other than "The Browns" -- very tough to read.

My lengthy response vaporized Mike. I think everything in the original post was spot on. You can't commit 180 yards worth of penalties (20 short of the NFL record) and have multiple turnovers and expect to win. I rewatched the Ravens game last night- and we're STILL making the same stupid mistakes we made 5 weeks ago- and that's on the Coaches, IMHO.

Changing the coach is the wrong move this is the Browns move bad your players not playing doing there job must be the coach let's change him. No not the answer. a coach needs and should get at least three years. And let's look at this petine hates Manzeil he want McCown he wants to we yet repeatedly the front office pushes for Manziel this year and last so it would seem that decision are coming from the front office. So peri e has no authority to do what he need. The player are being allowed to walk all over him they need to like petine coach.

I'll pose a question to you. Would Farmer have been texting down to the field last year during a game if he liked what he was seeing?

I think Mike H had it stated pretty well, one of the jobs of a HC is to develop your young talent. If you have tunnel vision- I gotta win games first, and screw everything else- as Pettine seems to be doing- that's a quick trip to the unemployment line.

You hire a head coach to coach not take orders from a gm the gm get the talent the head coach know full well and better if the talent can play and due to petine distain of Manziel and what we have seen on the field and off from him and Gilbert I would say he was spot on let him coach not be a puppet for farmer

how can you hire a team of FO personnel and a team of coaches that have a vision, and then just say after a year+ bye bye? let them do their jobs and don't let the whining friggin fans deter you from that path.

Mik- having a vision is wonderful. Problem is, you have to be competent enough to fulfill that vision. As I said, 3-14 makes me want to question their competence. Relative to some other teams (Ravens) we've been relatively injury free. We have essentially the same group of players as last year- and the results are worse.
