Scooby Wright III stands out as Cardinals wrap up Mini-camp

Last year was rough for Arizona Wildcats and Cardinals fans alike. Both teams fell short of expectations as the Wildcats struggled on defense and Cardinals failed to execute on special teams.

As the 2017 Cardinals Mini-camp wraps up, it seems as though one player remains the answer to each team’s problems. Scooby Wright.

The season was also hard on said player, who was one of the best linebackers to ever suit up for the Wildcats. Philip “Scooby” Wright III had a historical sophomore season as a versatile linebacker for the Wildcats back in 2014, racking up 163 tackles including 29 for loss and 14 sacks.

His impact on the gridiron was good enough to earn accolades such as Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, a Unanimous All-American selection, and ninth place in Heisman Trophy voting. Here are some highlights of the former Two-Star recruit’s historic season to jog your memory:

An injury-plagued junior season limited Scooby’s playing time the following year, causing his draft stock to plummet. He still elected to leave school early and declare for the NFL draft in a memorable and emotional announcement following a defensive MVP performance in the 2015 Gildan New Mexico Bowl. The performance was one of many examples of how vital Wright was for the Cats on defense as they struggled mightily without him this past season.

A poor showing at the NFL combine, namely “stiff hips” and a 4.90 40-yard dash time further dropped his draft stock, but Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians and general manager Steve Keim were still interested in picking up the Windsor, CA native.

Scooby ultimately fell to the 7th round of the 2015 NFL Draft to the Cleveland Browns at pick number 250 out of 253, giving him a new chip on his shoulder. Arians has stated that the Cardinals were waiting for the draft to conclude so that they could sign him as an undrafted free agent, but the Browns took a chance on him before cutting him loose during the season.

And now, the Cardinals finally have their man. The Cards picked Scooby up for special teams help during the last three games of the 2016 season. Wright did not disappoint on kickoff coverage, providing some great plays for a player who hadn’t taken reps on special teams in years. Now with his first Cardinals mini-camp` under his belt, Scooby may have found his home in the NFL.

Former Steelers linebacker and current Cardinals ILB coach Larry Foote was originally one of Wright’s biggest critics. But after receiving reps at the position due to an injury to safety-turned-ILB Deone Bucannon, Wright has turned some heads and changed the opinions of Cardinals personnel. Foote told Wright following his return to Arizona “Ooh, I had you wrong,” after seeing Scooby move in person on a football field.

His overall performance in mini-camp alone has boosted his chances to make the team as a key contributor on special teams coverage. According to AZCentral’s Kent Sommers, Arians himself has stated,

“He’s a football player… He’s dynamite in coverage. He got to where the guys were watching him cover. That’s always a fun thing, when the sideline says, ‘Hey, let’s watch Scooby.’ And he’d go down and blow some stuff up.”

The Cardinals are probably not terribly concerned about their current situation at inside linebacker. They’re coming off an offseason where they’ve signed Karlos Dansby to his third stint with the team while also drafting highly touted prospect by way of Temple University, Haason Reddick. That being said, defensive depth is vital in this league and Wildcats are quite familiar with Scooby’s defensive prowess.

While his frame at 6’0” 240lbs doesn’t suggest that he can play much outside of ILB, he has lined up on the outside as a pass rusher during his days as a Cat, using sheer will and determination to beat lineman on his way to the quarterback. The NFL is a different beast, but I believe that Scooby is a different animal in his own right. Maybe he’s no Honey Badger, but he very well could be Arizona’s Tasmanian Devil. Either way, this former Cat will continue to make us all very proud.

Sashi dropped the ball on Scooby... Damn sure would be nice to have Kirksey - Wright - Collins across the field at LB...

Hahaha he took 22.

The Browns never draft a Buckeye, finally sign one, then waive him right before he throws out the first pitch. To make it worse, the 1st round pick Wolverine then swoops in to take the open number. Lol

If you would ever pay attention to the trivia I put on here you would know why the #22 is significant: More HOFers have worn the #22 than any other number!!

Scoob may play harder for them than he would have for us so wise to temper all comparisons.

Had Greg Williams been the DC last year perhaps Scooby wouldn't have been put on practice squad at all. Combined with Peppers on coverage and blocking...damn.

Day 1 in the books & seems like Gregg Williams "Come get some Defense" don't mind the mid 90's heat in shorts either. Welcome Back Joel Bitonio to camp. Hue's sticking to the same QB rotation of Kessler one, Brock two, Kizer & Hogan 3's with Kizer still seeing some #1 reps. Kessler's same issues showed up today with 3 batted down passes with Kizer finding the wrong guy in Jamie Collins. Hue did like the competitive work, staying injury free & Cory getting thru walk thru of new routes with no helmet. In other team news--Odell Beckam showed up in camp in NY..Not so much in Schlitzburg where Le'veon Bell is either holding his groin or showing it to his ownership B) sat out along with Tuitt & Harrison as no shows.(Tomlin, how u dew'in?).More issues maybe headed Wentz's way on his OL. Not Lane Johnson, the PED scare has turned him to eating Kale. This time it's with his LT Jason Peters who is definitely looking more money at age 35 with expiring contract in 2019(ice up son ice up)

Day 2 Done. 3 final plays away or a early lighting siren away from Garrett's left foot injury. Hue's no doctor but surely will update later today. Hue changes up the Rotation of QB's starting reps to Kizer to Kessler to Brock("I want to start") than Hogan. Hue also seemed to leave the RT position up in the air but quoted it should be settled between a Pad Camp battle between Cam or S.Coleman. Hue loves the TE play right now & the young WR group is getting many reps which should separate with lots of reps with Britt & C.Coleman both out.In other Team Camp News..Derek Anderson a camp fight? Yep, with Captain Muderlynn. Greg Olsen looking new deal. Eagles Gm Howie must read BB after now locking up LT Jason Peters crying over no more guaranteed money, they found 15.5M. While are friend Demario Davis who would have made 3.7M with Browns this season takes pay cut to 100k signing bonus with 900k base salary but 1.2M set in insensitive(J e t s & insensitive LOL).Pro Bowl LT Duane Brown with Texans sitting out..$$.Doug Williams now VP of player personal at Redskins with RB Matt Jones wanting out getting shown 3rd team reps. The Jets did release Decker who made a visit to wife's hometown team & music career of Nashville Tennessee with Titians..

Some random opinions expressed by Nathan Zegura on our radio show yesterday:

Kenny Britt was back and looked very good. Apparently has a "huge catch radius" and was making plays.

Corey Coleman participated in the "walk-through" section of practice, and Hue said "he's closer to returning than not". Whatever that means.

Joel Bitonio was participating in solo drills, which is a VERY good sign.

Crowell looks absolutely terrific, and is in even better shape than last year. Sited one play where it appeared Crow was "shot out of a cannon for 35 yard run". Thinks Crow could have big year.

Ricardo Louis continues to impress, and was near unstoppable in 1-on-1 drills (which receivers SHOULD dominate, but whatever). Ricardo looks very big, and very fast.

Emmanuel Ogbah looked like a man possessed, and was virtually everywhere.

Jamie Collins looks like Jamie Collins...which is a very good thing.

Danny Shelton is still in fantastic shape and appears to be quicker and looking to build off a better season last year.

So now we are down to just one draft pick that needs to sign and he has the same piece of shit agent that held bosa out last year. Already one strike against just being from meatchicken. Hold out and the fans will deep fry him.

Zagura is the one guy not to believe....he works for the Browns and ALWAYS only says good things.....

Kenny Britt was back and looked very good. Apparently has a "huge catch radius" and was making plays.

Corey Coleman participated in the "walk-through" section of practice, and Hue said "he's closer to returning than not". Whatever that means.

Until I see him actually string together an entire camp and/or season....I aint holding my breath on this guy......

Joel Bitonio was participating in solo drills, which is a VERY good sign.

Excellent news....

Crowell looks absolutely terrific, and is in even better shape than last year. Sited one play where it appeared Crow was "shot out of a cannon for 35 yard run". Thinks Crow could have big year.

More excellent news....happy he is taking the high road and playing out....hope the Browns reward him with an appropriate contract....

Ricardo Louis continues to impress, and was near unstoppable in 1-on-1 drills (which receivers SHOULD dominate, but whatever). Ricardo looks very big, and very fast.

That would be a huge change from what we've seen so far.....he was incredibly stoppable last season.....easily shut down.....so, maybe a miracle turn around?

Emmanuel Ogbah looked like a man possessed, and was virtually everywhere.

Think he'll have a great season....and if Garrett comes through, he could be dominant.....

Jamie Collins looks like Jamie Collins...which is a very good thing.

Sounds good.....is he ignoring his coach here too?....or is he playing within the plan?.....curious to see how Williams responds to his free lance mentality

Danny Shelton is still in fantastic shape and appears to be quicker and looking to build off a better season last year.

More good news....think he has a chance to be a monster too

Peppers, right?......not surprised......same guy who couldnt get the other shit signed in time for Ota's, if Im not mistaken......sense a bit of prima donna here....hope he lives upto the hype....

Peppers, the guy that was willing to play 15 positions and hurt his draft stock, for the good of the Michigan football team, is anything but a primadonna

How about if we save the pole smoking until we actually see if the dude can do something positive. At this point, if he can produce something in the return game it will be a plus.

Caleb Brantley flashes skill but consistently frustrates coaches in camp:

During the NFL draft evaluation process, scouts both professional and armchair struggled with Florida defensive tackle Caleb Brantley. The quick, attacking style produced several splash plays which got him a lot of attention on the highlight reels. But he also had prolonged stretches where he did nothing, and his admitted lack of effort was a big part in that.
Caleb Brantley: 5 play video scouting report on Browns rookie DT
Through the first few days of practices, not much has changed for the sixth-round rookie. His wild fluctuations in play are already quite evident to the Cleveland Browns coaches. His position coach, former NFL Pro Bowler Clyde Simmons, is already frustrated with the inconsistency.
“He shows first-round talent at times and then he shows somebody who shouldn’t be playing at other times,” Simmons said after Thursday’s practice session to the gathered media in Berea.
The follow-up question came about Brantley’s effort and Simmons quickly replied, “Effort, all the stuff.”
Simmons continued,
“He’s like every young player that comes in this league. They’ve got an idea about what they want and what they think they can do, but you have to learn to play it the way we want you to play it.”
The next few weeks away from the team will be very telling for Brantley’s fate as a rookie. If he returns to July’s training camp in optimal shape and ready to go hard on every rep of every drill, the ex-Gator could earn a spot in the DT rotation. But if he doesn’t dedicate himself to being in prime condition both physically and mentally, there’s a very good chance Caleb Brantley won’t make the final 53-man roster.

I would not expect him to be a 100% starter. But yes, I do expect him to be in there like 30% of the time. So...he can give full effort the 30% of the time he is on the field...and he can take plays off when he is on the sideline. If that happens, he can be a contributor.

No pole smoking. A comment was made about him being a primadonna. We have plenty from his time at Michigan that proves that incorrect

This isn't saying he'll be in the HOF. This is commenting on his known personality.

Not much invested (6th round pick) in Brantley & there IS potential there, but if the young man doesn't show a consistent effort to THIS Coaching staff, he WILL be gone. I'm no gambler, but my money's on "BYE-BYE Brantley". We have too many D linemen who DO work to waste a roster spot on a loafer.

Aww....dont get all butt hurt woody.....I said "I sense a bit of prima donna"......and, otherwise, have had nothing but good to say about the guy....including being happy we picked him....

But.....when you draft 11 guys and 10 sign participation deals, but one doesnt.....then 10 sign contracts, but one doesnt......there is something there.....smoke that pole all you want, but it is what it is....

These are the kinda quotes that coaches & FO need to make a choice on now. These are the type of draftees or UDFA's we keep throwing on PS hoping they get hungrier but only take up a roster spot.Mean while there's guys like Rey Maualuga at age 30 with over 100 starts,699 tackles sitting as a FA for maybe 3M..Hue/Williams should know Rey pretty well..Cam Johnson & Schobert,Tank Carder?well ok then..

The coach just said that he needs to be more consistent with effort and everything, the coach said that the message has gotten through to him and the difference he has shown from rookie minicamp to this minicamp has been night and day.
