THE BROWNS BOARD

Updated Logos Announced Today!

first off who cares what other people think about the browns?

yes, marketing of the browns has always been lacking, but who's going to order pallets of browns gear outside of ohio?

if not for the internet i'd be wearing my moth-eaten dixon jersey still.

yes the attempt to bring attention to such a miniscule change in a logo was another whiff by them. but to say it's yet another part of the 'dysfunction' of the organization is laughable.

some fans on here just gotta find something to complain about. if not for them i guess i'd have nothing to complain about.

I agree. Some people just bitch because I suspect they are.

So, after another day to think about it and read all that the interwebz had to say, I am upset that the Browns have once again became another internet joke. Granted, I understand why they remained traditional, but on the other side, I would have loved to see them gain some attention on the positive side. Instead, all they did was change a few hues. Hopefully, the uni's will bring some positive attention.

Its only the bulldog that has brought some jokes. Nothing we can't handle.

Not sure about that... just check Yahoo. Plenty of articles, other forums have mentioned it outside of this and NE ohio. You guys need to get out more.. :)

The fans told the Browns, you can change the unis, but don't fuck with the helmets.

So that's what they did. Brighter orange, brown face mask. I'm sure the unis will be brighter and bolder too.

I don't know why people are freaking out about the helmet, it is the icon of our franchise, and we were told they wouldn't change it. The only news here is that replaced a cool looking dawgpound dawg with a Nick jr. version. Because football, the most violent game in sports, is for little kids.

The icon of our franchise is dated. I don't mind keeping the helmet as the logo. Just fucking update the helmet. Stop using the 1980's MS Paint color-by-numbers version.

Helmets have contours, lines, custom facemasks, visors, etc.

Sticking with a helmet but updating the way the helmet looks both honors tradition as well as shows vision and progress toward a new direction. Changing the color of the same logo isn't anything but minor tidying up.

because sports logos are almost always reproduced using spot colors with no gradients. they are primarily made up of strong line art with maybe 2-3 colors at the most in them. with that setup orgs don't go broke when reproducing them in shirts, embroidery on hats, patches etc. etc.

a 2-3 spot color job is about half the price to reproduce than something that will have to be color separated using halftones (to get those gradients) and prob need twice as many colors to accomplish the photorealistic look. and to accomplish that look doing embroidery is damn near impossible. not saying it couldn't be done but it always falls way short of what the concept art intended to look like.

in your attachment i count 8 colors, whereas in roycerolls mockup there are 3. in the bengals tiger logo, 3 colors. in the dawgpound logo 3 colors.

it'd be great to have your helmet on a shirt with a gradient font to go along with it, it's just that the said shirt would probably cost the consumer around $35.....for a s/s tshirt.

I agree with what you are saying in that my logo would be much less cost-effective to reproduce. However, you could reduce the color palette to 4 colors, remove the shadowing, thicken the stroke and and spot print that helmet with ease.

The point I was attempting to convey isn't the photorealistic quality of the current logo is poor, it's the actual helmet logo shape itself. We can update the helmet to a more modern helmet look that conveys more toughness and modernity than the current one.

and all along i thought you were just some ped'd ex-jock. seems like you know what you're talking about.

to your point though, i guess 'they' figured just stick with the basic clip-art looking helmet and font and just change the hue of the orange (i don't know why). the dawgpound logo is fine..... for the family picnic section of the stadium.

the big problem with all of this was making this an 'announcement' in the first place.

Eh, that's about the extent of what I know. An old friend owns a screenprinting and embroidery business and I designed the logos, jerseys and marketing materials for a small minor league football team back home. I currently work in marketing and PR but my real love is design.

The clip art design kills me. Always has. The Dawg Pound logo is okay by me except for his silly shit-eating smirk.

From the top down, this entire process was handled poorly. I hope there's at least a little fall-out in the marketing department after this, if only for my own selfish purposes.

Okay... I only have a few things to say on the Primary Logo and the Secondary Logo.

Basically I still believe that the Brownie should have been our Primary Logo, as it originally was.

I believe our secondary logo should have been the Helmet.

Our other logo should have been the DawgPound. And that would have made it available to tampering and tweaking throughout. Even a yearly competition or something. A FanVote or something.

The things you don't really want to change are the Helmet or the Brownie.. Those are the trademarks supposed to be left to Cleveland upon the team returning... Which, by the way brings me to my last point;

What the hell are they doing changing the color of the team!? That was supposed to be like fucking sacred right? I've only followed the team since 99 when they came back. But I thought that the city and the fans fought to retain team colors, team name and statistics.

Yeah, I understand that it's just a different color orange but still. It's a lot more red than the Orange we have known.. I liked the older orange color a lot better. That color had a soul to it, this new one... eh.

I showed my 10 and 11 year olds the before and after logos last night and asked them with ones they liked better and both the girls pointed to the old ones. I'm not sure this was necessary and it kind of bothers me they changed the color. Might it look good all said and done? Maybe, but now they have to repaint the stadium and change the seat colors. Really they should have just promoted Brownie and made a better dog logo. Kept the color the same but updated the uniforms.
