OK, I said that I would do an analysis of which teams have done the best and the worst when it comes to drafting QBs in the first round. I will break this down by division....plus I will go back to 1936 when the draft began instead of just starting in 1970. Here is the NFC West teams in their history. (note...the NFC West has the two teams that have move around the most)

Chicago/St. Louis/Arizona Cardinals:

Joe Namath....bust as far as Cards are concern as they "wasted" a 1st rd. pick on a guy that never played there

Steve Pisarkewiscz....bust

Kelly Stouffer....bust

Tim Rosenbach...bust

Matt Leinert....bust

(we may have a winner for the "team with the most busts in history" award with our first entry)

Can't wait to see Baltimore...if you include the Baltimore Colts history along with the Ravens it's almost as bad, like drafting Elway for him not to play

Can't do that because the Baltimore colts franchise is in Indiana :-P

Just like you'd group the oilers with the titans. Just because they're the same franchises just different zip codes.

A few factoids to glean from all this:

Seattle has the highest "bust" pct at 100% with 2 for two...Mirer/McGwire.....but, they have a small sample:

The teams with the really poor track record are:

the Bengals.....6 out of 7 busts

the Cardinals...6 out of 8 busts

the Packers...6 out of 8 busts

The Redskins....8 or 9 (if you count RGIII)....out of 12.

The Pats have avoided having any complete bust. They are 0 for 4 in my estimation.

The best at drafting first round HOF talent? The Steelers. Of 5 first round picks, 3 are HOF Caliber: Dawson/Bradshaw/BR.

Next is the Dolphins with 50% HOF rate: 2 out of 4: Griese/Marino.

The Redskins have drafted the most QBs in the first round in history with 12, the Lions have taken 10, and the Bears have taken 9. Longevity helps.

Also: 15 teams have a "bust" rate of 50% or better of their first round QBs picks. (Including Browns who are 4 busts out of 8 picks....including JFF).

I counted the Colts as having a decent rate. Only 3 out of 8 were busts. But the success rate includes Elway/Peyton/Luck...none of whom played in Baltimore. Baltimore Colts best choice was Bert Jones....and Flacco for Ravens.

Walsh was a supplemental pick. Dallas traded Walsh to the New Orleans Saints for first, third and second round draft choices. According to Wiki, he had an 11 year career.

I consider him pretty much a bust. For a long career he had very little production compared to others with similar careers At best you would say he was below average.

youre missing a lot of good QBs in those lists that were drafted in the 1st.. escpecially more recent ones

I didn't miss a single QB drafted in the first round......everyone that was drafted since 1936 is listed. Maybe I just hadn't gotten around to everyone when you posted. Is premature ejaculation usually a problem for you?

How awesome is it (for the Colts) that they'll have only two starting QBs in a 30 year span? I'd venture to guess that Luck will be there for a good portion of his career.

Wish we had that.

What about the guy that started for them against the Titans when Peyton was healthy.....and a win by them would put the Browns in the playoffs, but they sat Peyton and ton of other starters and gave a game away vs. Tits.

He was actually a pretty good QB. His just didnt have a strong enough arm. I thought it was amazing the Cowboys got 3 draft picks for him. BTW, nice job on the break downs.

Walsh did very little in his long career. I guess maybe he was not a complete bust. Below average. He was essentially a career backup....that is about the sum and substance of him.

Looking at the PFR's "Career Production Average" he got a score of 22 for his entire 11 year career.

Compare say, Tim Couch. In only 5 years he had a 32 score.

Or, let's compare him to his fellow Miami Fla. QB brethren:

Jim Kelly had a 103 CA in 11 years

Vinny had a 97 in 15 years

Bernie had a 67 in just 7 years

Walsh is next with that 22 score in his 11 years.

George Mira had a 10 score.

Funny that a lot of people think of Miami, Fla. as the "school of quarterbacks"....but in reality, that perception is based on just 3 people: Kelly, Bernie, Vinny......all of whom played on that team at the same time, Kelly as a senior, Bernie and Vinny as freshmen. Walsh was a very minor contributor to that theory....and Gino Torretta, though he won the Heisman is a big fat -0- score in the NFL CA. Even Ken Dorsey....who had only a 1 was better than Torretta.

In terms of which schools have produced the best QBs, I can only say that it is well know that Ohio St. is not one of them.

The best "QB" that came out of OSU, may not have been a QB much at all: Tom Matte......in fact he only threw 42 career passes.....but he did make a famous appearance at QB in a postseason game against the Packers.

No, he was a runner, with about 5000 career rush yards, and a receiver....with about 3000 career receiving yards.

The best OSU QB pro was Mike Tomcsak with a 43 CA followed by Kent Graham

Since it is Michigan week I will include them too. Michigan has a far better record at producing NFL QBs.

Obviously, Mr. Brady is one of the best of all time he has a 145 CA

Jim Harbaugh has a 78 CA

Brian Griese has a 53

Elvis Grbac has a 46

(these are all higher than OSU's best...Tomscak)

One of the best schools at producing QBs has to be Purdue with these entries adn their CAs:

Drew Brees 134

Len Dawson 110

Bob Griese 104

Jim Everett 87

Jeff George 65.....with talent that should have gotten him higher

Gary Danielson...48

all of these are better than OSU's best

Mike Phipps...40

Kyle Orton...34

Um, I'll posit Art Schlichter had the best pro potential of any OSU qb, too bad compulsive gambling landed him in jail.

Potential? Sure. That is perhaps what makes him one of the 5 all time biggest QB busts of all time.

Hell while you're at it list the 10 biggest qb busts of all time regardless of where drafted.

I'll start with Ryan Leaf

and Jafattus Russell.

Fill out the rest of the list with this hall of shame- I find little to argue with. You've been far to kind to Browns busts like Couch, Phipps, and Quinn. You HAVE to take into account where a player was drafted, and if you're drafted #1 overall or top 5, and don't at least have a long & productive pro career = bust in my book. Or if you gave up picks or players to get him. Care to argue at this point Trent Richardson is a big time bust- and RG III wasn't worth one first round pick, much less three?
