Votes = staying in power. That is what motivates many of the dems for an open southern border. Unfortunately cheap labor has motivated many of the chamber of commerce republicans to keep the border open as well and that is why for decades we have had little action in actually controlling the border. Both parties have had an interest in not securing the border.

 

The republicans though were being the hypocrites about it with their empty talk about securing the border to win elections and then going to Washington and doing nothing. That is a main reason for Trump's success in the GOP. The republican voters were fed up with the hypocrisy of the republican leadership.
