Orchard moving to DE Kirksey to OLB

Interesting moves these two are. So our LB corp is Collins, Davis and Kirksey. Maybe not so bad afterall.

I think they're both good moves though.....been factoring that Kirksey would end up outside, simply because we need someone there and he's got the background as an OLB....

Orchard at DE has also been something we'd like to see.....a little surprised they moved him already, due to the same as above.....a strong need for OLB's....

Im guessing we see Davis inside....with Collins and Kirksey outside......and then Davis sits when we go nickle....

Logical moves, but can't help but feel that we are weak at MLB and shallow as hell at LB...

... but you can't fix everything at once.

I think we are/were strong a MLB....as Kirksey/Davis/Collins were all MLBs at heart. It was OLB we were weak at. We had the out of position Collins at one spot and Joe Schobert at another.

While I advocated for getting another OLB, I didn't think we would do it by yet again moving another MLB out of position to put him on the outside.

Maybe this will work out....but to me it seems a desperate move. I had hoped they would do something in FA...or in the draft, and they did neither (except keep Collins...as an OLB...which, yes, is a big move...but is not an addition).

And I have perused the candidates still out there....nothing to float your boat. Only over the hill guys....or really meh guys...no better than what we have making this move.

So...maybe next year's draft? In the mean time....I see this as a stop gap measure.

Shallow, perhaps, but I like our starters.

Collins is a Top 10 linebacker, Kirksey is a top 25 linebacker and better suited for the outside, Davis is a solid, heady vet.

Let's see what Schobert looks like with a year in an NFL program, Alexander is a good backup, and Olugbode intrigues me.

As someone said, may have been you, Kirksey and Collins are simply on the field at all times, and mad doctor Williams will have safeties, linebackers and DEs coming from everywhere. I'm looking forward to seeing this defense, lots of young talent and a great coach ...

I see what you say....my "complaint" that some of these players may be asked to play out of position...may be irrelevent. In Williams system, all these guys may be moving around all over the place. Fair enough.

Agree, Z... starters are fine, but can't expect a full 16 out of all three.

Schobert... I've said before that I don't think anyone was more disappointed in his season than I. I saw a limited, over-achieving Badger underachieve his way to the bench in 2016. He actually looked confused in Horton's D. Maybe that was Horton making him think too much... maybe Williams can unleash him and let him play. It's really the only hope I see for him.

Otherwise? Maybe there's a jewel buried on the roster that I can't see past the pedestrian backups that are Carder and Alexander... or one of the two named make an unexpected leap, but... man, we are thin...

To close on a positive note.. at least we won't be thin at LB and trying to run a 3-4...

am just happy Gregg Williams does not seem to have that little table with the red hammer, green squares & yellow circles..Hey look this actually fits..watch the buckeye that transferred to Akron.Jamal Marcus growing up in Durham,NC is not Green Acres. You just never know till you move the rock

Orchard is in dire straits. He's going to have to show promise at DE or his next move might be out the door. My main fear with this move is that Bryant is shown the door.

And Kirksey, didn't he already move inside FROM outside? I thought he was getting torched by pass catching RB's...or am I thinking of somebody else?

and mingo was his name O?(maybe) but covering any TE or RB has been a real bad issue since Greg Robertson was shown the door

Yes, Kirk was an OLB at Iowa.

On Orchard... why would his move impact Bryant, a pure, 3/5 tech DT? Simply DL nose count?

I dont see why Orchard would be in dire straits....had a strong rookie season and really came on strong the last few games, then missed all of 2016 with an injury.......as a 2nd round pick, I see no reason the Browns would even consider getting rid of him with only 8 starts under his belt....seems crazy to me....

Kirksey was a MLB the whole time he was here....twas Mingo, Bryant and Kruger getting burned daily,,,,and twas Kruges(and half this board) who cried and cried about him having to cover(42 times in 16 games, btw) ...not Kirksey....

4-3 DE for Orchard.....should be a good fit.....(fingers crossed)....and, yeah, lets hope he DOES beat out the older - over paid Bryant.....that would be a sign of improvement on a line that has performed poorly....(consistently).....

Sir Mud, all we got to go on is the last time we saw Orch..It was a preseason game at GB after Hue stated all previous draftees would be re-evaluated..May not mean a thing**** but why was Orch out there still playing with 3rd & 4th on depth chart in 4th qtr??..we shall see, it is not Horton's defense

Des Bryant?

Yes, Desmond Bryant. Up to now he's been about the only guy who could pressure a QB....even though he doesn't have huge sack numbers.

Not for nothin' but I ain't ever seen Orchard do much of anything.

We have a new D-Coordinator, so, all bets might be off.

.....and it must have been Robertson that I saw chasing pass catching RB's.

I remember against the Patriots, one play they sent their pass catching RB split out wide left, and Robertson went out there with him.....I immediately yelled out (I was in the stands) There's a linebacker in coverage! Well, Robertson DID stop the RB...but it was 50 yards downfield.

I fail to see how Orchard will be taking Des' spot...?

Numbers game on the DL.

Yeah... even that one flew over my head... standing on a chair.

On the numbers game... keep maybe 9 DL? Four pure DTs and DEs and one swingman? And Orchard as a DE/LB swingman helps as well...

DTs (tech)

  • Danny (0/1)
  • Meder (0-3)
  • Ojund (1-5)
  • Brantley (3/5)

DEs (tech)

  • Myles (5-9)
  • Ogbah (5-7)
  • Nassib (5-7)
  • Orchard (7/9/LB)

Swing (tech)

  • Bryant (3-7)

Seems a reasonble blend...

Good stuff! I could see us keep the 9 you list.

I like Bryant's flexibility to play virtually any technique upfront. There's even been occasions where Bryant lined up on the Nose vrs Cincy (the last time we beat them in 2014). He's been a great guy to have especially when we were working around injuries. Me thinks he still could be if there isn't a hurry to race him out of here due to his age. He should have fresh legs after missing last season. I'd love to see this guy in Gregg Williams' D.

Right now, the depth for the dline depth looks good on paper. That said, injuries in training camp and preseason can change that quickly.

Seems fair. Will they keep that many? If so, we will have to add an O to the GOOONS squad. Or to the GOOOMBaS.

Certainly a tendency, O, but not if other factors, e.g., performance/production, outweigh clearing the spot to develop a youngster.

I think that applies to Bryant... plus missing 2016 does make him a fairly low-mileage 30-yo...
