In Previous posts it was noted that Tim Tebow was being given another chance with the Eagles. And FYI, it would not surprise me if we hear about a couple more of these types of guys being given a shot. The Motivation?: The New Extra Point rules. Think about it: the new extra point rules for kicking are going to make the EP the equivalent of a 32? yard field goal. (ball marked at 15 + 7 yards back +10 for the endzone) But, if you want to go for 2....the ball is to be spotted at the 2. And just do the math: If you try to Keek a touchdown/EP, and miss, it is all bad. But lets say that a team almost always goes for the 2 pt. try. Now, if a team scores 3 TDs in a game, they usually get 3 pts kicking it.....but, if they miss just one EP under the new rules, they would only get 2 pts. On the other hand, if a team basically ALWAYS goes for the 2 pts....it could invariably come out ahead. Let's say they a team scores those 3 TDs a game. Trying for a 2 pointer and being successful each time gives you 6 extra points. Even missing once gives you still 4 pts.....which is more than you would have if you were successful after every kicked EP. If you miss twice you still get 2 pts....which is still the equivalent of making 2 out of the 3 32 yard FGs/EPs. How does a team improve its chances of making a 2 pt. extra point? Put in a 2 point EP QB specialist!! You want a big strong versatile guy that can run the ball in up the gut, who can roll out on an option like play and either pass it in or run it in. A guy that can fake a run and do a jump pass. And...you may also want a guy that is somewhat expendable.....one that if you do lose him to injury...it wouldn't be the end of the world. Many or most teams are not going to want their Tom Brady/Peyton Manning/Drew Brees/even BR or 35 yard journeyman pocket passers (see Josh McCown) out there on that play where injury is a danger. They don't want their fragile Sam Bradford like starting QB in on that play.....but they may want the bigger, beefier, slashier guys that are expendable out there like Tebow and Terrelle. You don't want these guys out there in regular play.....but if they can get you two yards with the strength and modest ability to throw a 5-10 yard pass.....it may open up a whole new venue for failed QBs. If they can give you a little something on top of it.....like Terrelle as a WR, Tebow on special teams....it may make them worthy of a roster spot. gftChris Posted June 23, 2015 Report Share Posted June 23, 2015 There's a whole host of college QBs who were good because they were bigger, stronger, faster than the competition - Russell, Young, Tebow, Pryor, Miller, and (here come the torches and pitchforks) Cardale Jones. That is possible too...though with him you would have to rely on his shiftiness and squirminess rather than the brute force that a Tebow could bring....or the fact that a Pryor could leap for 2 yards. if he had to. Exactly....though at this point Cardale Jones may want to be tested for full time QB duty. But, yes, these 2 pt. specialist could be valued....but they would have to have other uses to be worthy of one of the 53 man spots. Take Tebow....He could be a punt protector, holder, occasional H-back....emergency 3rd string QB.....and 2 point specialist. FYI, there was a guy once that sort of had that position....and got a nickname for it: Two Point Tommy Tupa. (yep, another former Ohio St. QB. They can be a dual threat. The can run....they can fake run, option....and in a pinch actually throw a regular pass....even though as full time passers they have proven to be shite. The following link shows a list of 10 people who they think will benefit from the rule....most are some of the best players going anyway: TEs like Gronkowski and Graham, RBs like Lynch and Arian Foster, running QBs like Newton and Wilson, receivers like Dez Bryant and Odell Beckham. Plus Tebow. While sure, these players are some of the best in their position, I do believe there will come the two pt. specialist....like Tebow/Pryor and others. http://sportsnaut.com/2015/05/10-nfl-players-who-could-benefit-due-to-pat-rule-change/ The above articles and others I have seen tout the Seahawks as being major threats to make their 2 pointers....because they have Wilson, Lynch, and now Graham. But what the fuck happened the last time the Seahawks attempted what amounted to 2 point conversion? No, it wasn't a 2 pointer.....only the equivalent of one for a TD that would have won the Super Bowl!
