Opal312
Duke Johnson has not signed and is missing from OTAs. Mary Kay says it's a family matter. He's the only draftee not signed. Is this just a no big deal? Tashaun Gipson hasn't signed his tender. Did the Browns F.O. make a mistake in not tendering him for more? He sees what the Patriots gave Devin Mcourtey (around 47milliion ) and knows he's better.

gumby73
Duke- Family matter popped up first and we hope its not long term to keep his head in the game. RB taken ahead and after him our signed so the money slot is there. Was sent to Rookie Show in Caly apon his return, a non issue to sign.. Gipson-- A Big Issue and Farmer gave him his shot and another shot to bring him a deal. He will Be a Brown, It's up to 2 Guys doing Business with Dollars, Worth and Time.. Tick Tock!!! wargograw
Can someone summarize the situation with Gipson? What happened to "there is no chance we lose him"? Ibleedbrown
Can someone summarize the situation with Gipson? What happened to "there is no chance we lose him"? Now the reports seem more concerning. I'm new to all the financials of the league. This may be partially factual and partially made up, but Gipson was an udfa something like 4 years ago, but due to performance and circumstances he ended up getting significant playing time, and did ok. Between then and now l think the Browns resigned him on a "you're still proving yourself" type of contract. Now the guy is argueably one of the top safeties in the league and has been playing for relative peanuts for the last 4 years. So naturally, he wants to get paid and most concur he deserves it. But whenever big money is involved naturally both sides are going to haggle. He also broke a leg last year, which would be awesome if he was an actor, but he's not. Mudfly
urgg.....lets do this one......more.......time....... 1) Gipson has been a Brown 3 years and only played 2 of them.,,,,,and he missed the second half of yr 2 with an injury... 2) He was given a second round tender because thats what the browns HAD to do to retain him....but it isnt necessarily their best offer to him..... 3) He CANNOT sign anywhere else....he is NOT a free agent......so, IF he wants to play, he will play here..... 4) Next year, if he plays well, we can trans tag him and keep even longer....so, he does NOT have the option to leave, if we decide to keep him,, 5) At this point, he is NOT holding out, but simply making a statement by not being at OTA's. They are not madatory, so he's not there... Stop whining about his god damn contract and just wait a minute.......he'll play for us this year.... My own opinion is he hasn't earned the right to be the top paid safety cause he doesnt have the body of work yet.....1/2 of a good season and a Pro Bowl doesnt earn you top pay instantly....THAT kind of thinking is how so many teams end up with overpaid players and screwed up rosters..... 1 Pro-bowl does not equal = "Pay the man Shirley"....... Next year is his FA year(when ALL player nego their first big contract) and, if he plays well, then he will have the opportunity to nego a bigger deal.....if he's so great and completely healed, then it should be no problem for him to show up....play great AGAIN....and prove he's worth the top dollars that are just one season away.... Personally, he's really starting to get under my skin with his "pay me now" whiny ass attitude.....

I have a gut feeling that the Browns have already made a pretty decent offer given the circumstances. To me, it also speaks volumes that no other team seemed ready to give up a 2nd rounder for him. As Mud stated....1 1/2 years of good production & a season ending injury? I'll just wait & see what happens. Mike

Westside Steve
I guess I'd have some concern about family matters taking a man away from what should be a multi-million dollar career. Perhaps if we'd heard something about the nature of the family matters and how dire his situation may possibly be. And as yet we've heard nothing along those lines. I'm not quite sure what horrible family situation would preclude someone from a 15 minute discussion with an agent and the time it takes to scratch your mark on a contract. Unsympathetic
The thing that's concerning to me is that rookie deals in the NFL are slotted.. that is, the potential differences we're talking about, presuming there is a discussion going on between Team Duke and Team Haslam, are in the thousands of dollars - not millions. What possibly could be holding it up?
Mudfly
What possibly could be holding it up? sounds like personal family issues..... """Browns running back and unsigned third-round pick Duke Johnson did not miss voluntary OTAs this week because of any contract squabble, the Northeast Ohio Media Group is reporting. Mudfly
Well the good new is that Duke is at OTA's and practicing.....and apparently, he's looking good!.....here's a snippet from yesterday.... """""After tending to a family matter last week, Johnson was back in a big way Tuesday. Defensive linemen aren’t allowed to have contact with running backs, but it’s likely they would not have even had the chance to on some of Johnson’s runs. His explosiveness is apparent and all signs are pointing toward the rookie from Miami crafting a unique, but siginicant role by September. “There was one of the runs in the team period that unless we were playing flag football, that would have been a 40- or 50-yard chunk,” Pettine said. “He’s got a lot to learn, but he’s probably a typical rookie where he is right now.”"""
PoeticG
Crowell and West are kind of similar players but they are a bit different in running style, but Duke Johnson is Totally different in his approach, I can only believe that that will make our run defense all the better as we can get so many different looks vs. running backs. As long as he's stays in shape he should be ok. You're missing my point. Of course the hospital isn't going to give us details of anyones illness but any reporter worth a shit could figure out that somebody's mom brother Father cousin sister or family pet was in a medical facility or the penitentiary. And you've seen the quality of sports reporting around here. That kind of story would be among the most solid scoops we get. And you are correct, it doesn't matter at all if A he's at practice B he eventually signs and C he isn't a flake. WSS
