Cody Kessler is interesting. He’s not a good quarterback, but he might be a good backup.

In his first season, the Cleveland Browns QB actually faired well in deep passing compared to previous QBs, though when those QBs were Brian Hoyer (2014) and Josh McCown (2015) toddlers could look pretty favorable too. There’s a couple of great play extensions, but the overall tape is limited and meh in general.

There’s not much else for me to talk about, so this is a season that just serves its purpose and not much else.

A Game Manager..We were not blessed with Andrew Luck at #1 :o. No Brady. No Ben's either. A Guy(commander) that can get us in & out of Huddle without burning TO's(Hue 2). A Guy that makes the right choices that protects the pigskin. A moving the chains Guy. A Guy that can read a pro defense on 3rd down to take a risk when we need 7 yards & not throw it 5 yards..Kizer, Kessler,Brock..Hue got what you signed up for ;)

I can see that opinion also. But it seems that a QB lineup of game managers start at Flaco & below. There's Brady throwing to a Browns receiver crew weekly. Ben,Bradshaw,Warner's throwing to some of the best receiver crews in the business. Just trying to find a Dalton or Flaco is tough anymore. A lot of the just average QB's are walking the streets these days..We maybe staffing 2 right now.. EDIT-good tape stuff T- I just never get how Carr got Drafted #36. Brees #32(after Vick) & Cousins a 7th pick in 4th round? apparently they are still pissed also

I think Kizer has come into the perfect environment for 'him'.

Even as a rookie he has a legitimate shot at the starting job. (his competition bar is not set too high)

I disagree.

Some QBs simply lack one or more skills to manage the game, but let's set them aside and start with other QBs simply can't restrain themselves... their inner urges to "compete" or "perform" overwhelms their capacity for "patience" or "discipline".

My favorite example of this is Brett Favre. Only one year in his career, after Reggie White 'splained it to him, did Brett manage to do so... and the Pack won their only SB during the Favre era.

But the degree to which any QB manages a game is a sliding scale. From Favre at the minimal end to probably Brady at the top end. Tom is in a special class of manager... he's an orchestrator.

I honestly don't see anybody beating out Kessler for the job, and that's ok. He's the only QB familiar with Hue Jackson's system, he doesn't have a history of turning the ball over, and there's a good chance he's going to improve on his rookie season. Kessler wasn't really supposed to even play last year, but he came in and actually did a few nice things. In all honesty, he should've had a couple of wins under his belt, but let's not go there. I think it's safe to say that Kessler has been working his ass off this offseason, and he's in a much different position than he was last year. Last season he was a third round pick that NOBODY was predicting much from, let alone somebody that would start 8 games. THIS year is quite a different story, and Kessler is probably going to be the guy getting the first team reps from OTA's, to minicamp, to training camp, to preseason, and whatever else. He's going to be "the guy", at least to start. From what I understand about NFL practices, the "reps" are everything. Every time he gets to work with the starters, and every time he gets the first team reps, he is going to become more comfortable. More comfortable recognizing coverage, understanding the hot routes, knowing when to attack deep and when to dump it short.

One of the biggest hurdles facing Kessler was the fact he couldn't stay healthy. That won't be a problem during the offseason (hopefully), as teams don't play full contact, and nobody can hit the QB even when practice DOES become padded. Bottom line? Kessler could potentially be the starting QB all of the way up to the preseason, and potentially to the regular season. That's a pretty big advantage, and I don't believe a rookie could overcome that, or somebody as inaccurate as Brock. Kessler will get the ball out quickly and accurately, and this will hopefully work for now. The other hurdle facing Kessler was the aforementioned lack of deep ball execution, and I have faith this will get somewhat rectified as he gets more experience. Please understand that I'm not saying that Kessler will blossom into Joe Montana in year two. I am merely suggesting that Kessler will most likely win the starting job, and if healthy, will remain in the pilot's seat. We improved the OL, added some major defensive players, and the idea is to make the game as easy for our QB as possible. We're going to commit to the run, and hopefully our defense does a better job of forcing turnovers and holding teams to FG's. We need to keep the game close so we don't get back into the position of being down 20 points and passing every damn down.

Part of his health is in his hands tho... even should OL play improve as much as we hope/expect it to improve, the QB behind it has to process what he sees and pull the trigger.

Anyway...

I did mean this Analytics write-up to be a benchmark for Kess. If he has improved his "arm" and plays with the confidence it might bring, then we should see results early.

Joe's seems impressed...

Joe Thomas on Kessler: "It looks like he has improved his zip on the ball."

Yes, but Joe also spoke to your point about part of his health being in His hands. Joe pointed out Eli Manning and how he know how to pass, align himself to minimize the oncoming hit, and fall so as to NOT get hurt. Peyton was much the same way. As the QB you have to keep from getting hurt because losing you has a BIG affect on the team. You can't be stupid like RG3. You've got to throw the ball away and punt so that you can live to try again. Somehow, Kessler doesn't seem like the ballerina type though.

Gentlemen... (which reminds me... where is our gal, Opal, these days?)

I give you the Cody Kessler power diet...

Here's what Browns QB Cody Kessler ate for 3 months while trying to lose body fat

By Scott Patsko, cleveland.com

BEREA, Ohio - Browns quarterback Cody Kessler was listed at 6-foot-1, 215 pounds last season. It's the same weight he is listed at this week during OTAs.

But Kessler said Wednesday that he is probably a couple pounds heavier. And most importantly, those extra pounds are muscle. Kessler explained that he did a lot of work in the weight room, along with working on his mechanics. The result has been more zip on his passes.

But perhaps the biggest commitment he had to make in improving his performance was with his diet. Kessler ate the same thing for about three months, and he said it helped him reach his fitness goals.

"My biggest focus was losing body fat weight and being a healthier weight than I was. Muscle was my main focus," Kessler said. "It was tough eating the same thing every day, breakfast, lunch and dinner, snacks in between. The same thing over and over and over."

This is what Kessler ate for almost three months, beginning a couple weeks after last season ended:

Pre-workout at 6:30 a.m.: Power bar.
Breakfast: Two scrambled eggs, plain oatmeal made with water (nothing else in it), two pieces of fruit (banana or apple), milk and water.
Snack: Almonds.
Lunch: Turkey sandwich with whole wheat bread and provolone cheese (nothing else on it), 15 baby carrots, banana, water and milk.
Snack: Pretzels with peanut butter.
Dinner: Cooked chicken breast, spinach with no dressing, whole wheat pasta with nothing on it, milk and water.

"It was tough. But (team dietician Katy Meassick) is great with that and helped me out. I switched it up here and there maybe a couple days, different things. But it worked for me. I really stuck with it," Kessler said. "As boring as it may sound, it's something I was committed to and excited to do in this off-season. I really never committed myself to a meal plan that strict. It was tough but it was worth it."
